this exercise is superb! When you practice it in every single position, combination and form, It will really pumps up your triad understanding, and you general knowledge of the neck and major scale .... and it does it fast!. When you had master it you'll become a triad god. I can't highlight its importance enough I wish I'd practiced this earlier in my life. It would'd saved me many hours of unefficient exercises.

Mr. Larsen, I just wanted to say thank you for what your doing.Im a blues rock style guitar player,been playing a long time,with minimal amount of music theory.I used to give my dad crap for listening to jazz. He told me one day when I matured, I would,I guess he was right!I Everything with playing guitar came pretty easy to me,learning scales and modes and how they work and stuff,but jazz has me totally baffled! It seems so complex, i love how it sounds , but not a clue of what's going on,over the simplest line.Anyway I been watching you and feel like, im starting to get my feet wet. Thanks again Jens,keep um comin!

Jens, I'm having some trouble understanding how you find your avoid notes. In the key of C, I think I understand that in the Dm7 the B would be the avoid note because of the augmented 4th between F and B (am I right that this is the reason?), but I don't get why C would be the avoid note in the G7(b9). I guess I need more explanation of how you find avoid notes. The explanations I find on the web are all about just the major keys. Thanks, as always.
@JensLarsen8 жыл бұрын
On a major chord the 4th is always an avoid note, that's why the C is an avoid note on G7 (because it is also a major chord)

Hello Jens, i have a question, are the triad pairs a concept of jazz improvisation derived from triadic superimposition and extended tertian structures??? I'm learning à theory jazz book from Bert Ligon and i'm not sure if i'm in the right way to learn the foundation and origin of triad pairs.Thank you for your vidéos and help.
@JensLarsen8 жыл бұрын
I don't really know where they come from in terms of theory. I only know it as a widely used melodic device and when I used I don't really feel the need to explain it, as long as I can use it to make good melodies with. Does that make sense?
@bokbok66765 жыл бұрын
One thing I struggle with is the rythm of the melody or feeling the rythm when I improvise. I listen to the bass and drums but sometimes they are not inspiring. Sometimes it doesn't matter and I can do it regardless. Are there some basic tips for what I should listen out for when I am not feeling it. It is most satisfying when we lock in and feed off each other.
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Are you talking about whether you are locking in with the groove or about the rhythms you play? :)
@bokbok66765 жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen locking in with the groove while soloing. Sometimes the rythm is not inspiring...sometimes I can inspire the rythm. If I play with a really hot rythm section I can play a single note and sound great.
@JensLarsen5 жыл бұрын
Ok. I think a lot of it is having a really strong sense of subdivision. For example : try to record yourself soloing with a backing track in a DAW and listen to how you sound with out the backing track. If you can getto sound really good with out the track then you are good, and if the rhythm section suckstyou can't fix that 🙂
@bokbok66765 жыл бұрын
Haha love it Jen's thanks.

Why did we only omit the note B from the the chord Dm why not E or G...or it's just 1 example?
@JensLarsen3 жыл бұрын
Because of the context. In a II V, the job of the Dm7 is to delay the B until G7.
@raktim3693 жыл бұрын
@@JensLarsen thanks for replying Sir...If I use the vocabulary of the chords and use triads with no common notes will that be ok? Like I mean seeing the notes in chords literally before forming the pair?

Listening to jazz solos I've noticed the improviser using non-chord tones on the downbeat, the 4th/11th is used frequently. It seems like this occurs as much as the use of chord tones. I also find structures that are obviously some type of substitution but I'm not able to find any reference to what I think they were thinking. For instance, Aeolian or Dorian one whole step below Dominant chord.
@JensLarsen6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try to play jazz after rules that are so simple, and probably modes is not a good tool to describe most jazz solos 🙂
@jazzis4u14 жыл бұрын
Think you’re a very good player. Like your videos a lot. But not sure why you, especially you, would consider B an avoid note on D-7. I love the sound of it in jazz. Not quite in or out. Just a very interesting color in my opinion.
@JensLarsen4 жыл бұрын
Because of how the Dm7 sits in the progression most of the time. And I doubt that I actually call it an avoid note 🙂
@kylefloros7 жыл бұрын
Hi, around 7:30 you know to play C harmonic minor over G7 flat 9. I have some disconnect there. How should I go about learning those relationships. Just by Googling "what scales can I play over [some chord type]" and experimenting? Or is there a "system" out there to come up with that? Thanks
@JensLarsen7 жыл бұрын
Well if you know your scales and the diatonic chords then you could ask yourself: In what scales can I find a G7(b9). In general you want to learn to understand the basic harmony related to the major and minor keys. I don't have any resources on that because I learnt it at the Conservatory, but I am sure you can find it if you look.

So I'm trying to get my head around this. Dm7 has A as the third which is only a half step from the B and that causes unpleasant dissonance. And therefore the only triads available in the key of C are C and D? F isn't suitable because it isn't a half-step from F and obviously shares notes etc which really limits the choices. Is there a list of paired triads or just ordinary triads available that lists which ones are suitable? If paired triads are as melodic and useful as they sound, I'm wondering why so many people just use scales.
@JensLarsen6 жыл бұрын
A is the third of Dm7? No, not really ☺️
