Pacing issues for me and didn’t explore the characters enough. For instance, John Martorano was Bulger’s most valuable enforcer yet they barely touch upon him. And they barely explore Kevin Weeks, Whitey’s most promising protégée. Idk, it’s not a bad movie at all. I just remember being very disappointed and how the gang was explored.

@@RazPerignon I think this is the main thing, you're right. It's very well acted, it's well directed, all that good stuff - but after the halfway mark every scene is full of a certain kind of tension that wears one out very quickly. It goes from [SPOILERS WARNING!!!] Jimmy's Mother's funeral, the prostitute being grilled, the prostitute being strangled, the extremely tense "secret recipe" dinner scene, Jimmy getting way too close for comfort to Connelly's wife... no release at all, just darker and darker, more and more "oh please, no!" moments... ...and those moments can work, but not that many of them, back-to-back-to-back! Classics like Goodfellas, The Departed, etc., are very tense, yes, especially as the walls are closing in, so to speak, but they also always have levity, or a moment or two that lets you breathe easy. Black Mass is humorless, utterly brutal. And perhaps that makes it truer to it's source than the other films, but not nearly as easy to enjoy.
@BensonAndHedgers2 жыл бұрын
@@chasethomas9238 yeah the intensity is somewhat supposed to portray what a psychopaths mind and life would be like, I'm not too sure its spot on to character but it's played well, feeling the constant evil and betrayal. It seems to keep me interested through it all. It's not really meant to have an attractive side to it like most Gangster flicks do.

@@RazPerignon goodfellas is an all time great film in any genre. Mass was good on its own, just like state of grace. No need to compare films just because their crime dramas. They can be good in their own way, and they are covering completely different crime families to begin with.

He actually kind of didn’t. He did good for what the movie was portraying but if you read the books and interviews from real guys he was nothing like bulger. Whitey hardly cursed in real life at all and didn’t talk down to his crew like in the movie. With the Irish crews it’s more a mutual respect than a dictatorship. Bulger couldn’t have talk to to Flemmi or John montarano the way he did in the movie. Even Kevin weeks said once that Steve flemmi or any of them would have killed whitey for talking to him like that in real life. There is a few little segments of his voice on the documentary the people versus James Whitey Bulger and when you hear him speak you can tell he was nothing like he sounded like in the movie. He’s real Boston sounding and we’ll spoken. Johnny didn’t really have much to go off of considering he never even got to me vulger or have much material to go off of. He embodied what bulger was on the inside but on the outside not so much.

My guess is that during the course of the day as the sun moved to the other side of the street, it made the window and the room less dark. So they had to film through a veil so they weren't seen. Look at 06:19. You can kind of see the shadow of the veil they're filming through as well. And like someone else commented earlier, I think Bulger knew he was being surveilled 07:13.

Look I'll explain the situation between the Italians and the Winter Hill gang. Bulger was feared as he feared the Italians. The Patriarca family had allies such as the Gambino Crime Family and the Genovese Crime Family so Bulger knew. However the reason there was a small "war" between the Winter Hill and the Patriarca family in Boston was because they moved Into their territory without paying and by rules, If you move into someones territory you need to be pay a procentage. The Patriarca family wanted to show NY that they were a strong family so the five families in NY decided to not get into that. The NY families are smart, If you want to move into a territory you need to be able to do It yourself and by that I mean without the help of the other families. The NY families such as the Gambinos and the Genoveses would have taken over Boston If they decided to help with manpower however the Patriarca family wanted to show that they could handle their buisness by themself, and also If they wanted their help they would need to kick up a % of all the money the family would get which would be a lot so they wanted to take care of the Irish themselfs. Bulger had right by rule to defend his territory so he did It, and the Patriarca famimy didn't ask for help cuz that would be a fking disgrace for them. When It comes to killing a made guy which Bulger did, It was all in 'self defence', because the Italians killed a lot lf Bulgers friends as well. NY knew that putting manpower in that territory for a "bit leverage" or a procentage wasn't worth It so they stayed out. Boston was ruled by Bulger and the Irish, they controlled It while the Patriarca family controlled a portion. I promise, If the NY decided to get involved, everyone in the Winter Hill would turn up dead and that's not a joke, the Genovese family was the smartest of all the five families and the Gambinos were the best at hittin people. The Colombos, Luccheses & the Bonnanos had nothing to do with Boston but the Luccheses was strooong allies with the Genovese family so Bulger would have had a big problem by them to.
