Hi there Just some advice to save some time: let the loco run its own wheels at high power, and use very fine sandpaper and then wet and dry and then polish for the wheels. It saves lots and lots of time! Make sure to stop every now and again so as to not burn out the motor coils. Also the magnet should be north through the top of the motor, it was already the wrong way round. If you ever feel like it you can use polish on the commutator - I use Goddard's brass/copper and they come up so bright within a minute. Also perhaps try thick grease in the rear motor bearing and worm, i found it transforms them noise wise. Lovely to see how these late 50's tri-ang toys can come back to life Regards Will

That great advice, thank you, I will get some Goddard's and give it a go. Interesting about the magnet, I will taka a look. Thanks for watching, Matt

Hi Matt. I wouldn't bother with suppressors as they were used to stop interference with old analogue TVs and old radios. I don't have a use for them any more in fact, I find them an unnecessary inconvenience. Paul. 🤘

Great little shunter. It would look good hauling a local pick-up goods. I like the original Tri-ang couplers, they look less obtrusive than the later ones.

Yes I agree, I need to get the older track cleaned up so I can run these older large flange wheel locos.

That one is slightly older than the one I bought brand new for £5.75 in Blue. I wonder how much your model sold for when new. Martin (Thailand)

I think the one I have is 1961/62 as the black colour only appears to be for a couple of years. Thanks again for watching.

Hey Matt. This was not originally a Hornby loco. Your Tri-ang Boxed model with the Mk 2b coupling predates the Hornby brand and is from the late 1950's. These were priduced up to and including 1958 I think. Tri-ang made your, model not Hornby.

I don't touch the magnet or take the motor out of these 1950's chassis. You can clean the commutator with a toothpick in the grooves and then IPA on a cotton bud. Then clean the brushes with IPA on a cotton bud too and then lube and you are off. These motors were built to maintain and repair. A gentle touch is best. Mon

I do apologise Mon, I am still learning and playing with youtube, I posted a video with Triang before it got very very few views so I have just added the word 'Hornby' as keyword to see what happens, sorry to mislead and thank you for pointing out that it is misleading, I will make some changes . That said you are absolutely correct with this being Triang and from the 1950's but as far as I can tell the black body was only released in 51/52 and then the body colour changes to green do you know if that is correct

@@dustyshelfcollectables no need to apologise Matt and it wasn't misleading. Being a Tri-ang fan and collector means that I see the Hornby brand thrown in a lot when in fact if it wasn't for Tri-ang, Hornby wouldn't exist. If you look up Tri-ang R152 in Google and then see the Hornby Railways Collector Guide in your search results you'll see the years Tri-ang produced the Black shunter. Your model was produced 1956, 57 and 58 according to this. In 1959 they went to green and the coupling changed. The Guide is very useful for researching these details. The service sheets for these old models are also still online and their exploded views are quite clear (the nut goes on the bottom), which can help avoid short circuits when putting motors back together. Personally I never remove a base plate or dismantle a motor of these vintage models unless it is totally necessary. In my experience cleaning the commutator and brushes and oiling the X.04 bearing pads, drive worm etc is all that is required in most cases. Keep up the good work. 👍 Mon

Thanks mon, I will have a look at the Hornby collectors guide, I think I have seen it before, may be more helpful than my Ramsey's.
