The $7000.00 USD pair, Triangle Duetto 40th stand mount speakers are a remarkable performer. They are exquisite to look at and to listen to. The best speakers I have reviewed to date. Detailed and reveling their ability to image is amazing. Huge, wide, deep and precise.

Bit of trivia about tympani drums - they are (one of?) the only instrument that starts with a rarification. Because the mallet strikes the head and pushes in down, and the "kettle" body of the drum doesn't let that initial sound out. This is part of why their sound "cuts" through the orchestra. And by the way, the initial sound pressurization of most instruments has a little more attack and energy - most sound waves are slightly asymmetrical.

Great review. I could imagine the edge a was great with the triangles. Every time I heard this amp at Holm Audio I loved it regardless of speakers. They have similar specs but can be had for under 3K on sale so less than 1/2 the price. I love mine. The beryllium tweeters sound great without being harsh. The attack with the 6.5 inch midwoofer is excellent with my pair of SVS subs taking the 80 Hz and below energy. Highly recommend.

Getting to know or understand how a speaker or amp interacts with your room and displays its attributes does take time. I've found that out as well as understanding what one personally needs in performance. I like space, separation and good tone with lots of textures real instruments display. I can give up a bit of resolution and dynamic swings as I typically don't want a live and loud performance in my space but more a reminiscent performance of live at lower SPLs, much lower.

I don't think you'd like this, however, I had these speakers. I can agree with all that you said, but.. Yeah, the famous but. It never really engaged me. The treble is amazing tho, it's like turning on a light. No you won't get fatigued. It is fantastic open. I had to return them for other reasons, but I don't regret it. There was some.. I don't know, paper sound on some tracks. I don't like when I hear that presence of a driver. Some boomy sounds now and then, blame my room maybe, but a lot of other speakers don't. I also found out with the stands, they kind of took up as much place as a floorstander. It looked at little messy, anyway, there you have some caveats. Loved the punch in them tho. I used Yamaha A-S3200 amp and Eversolo Z8 dac, PC as SS. I didn't test it in depth like you did, but lived with them. Still use my LS50 until I find a pair that really speaks to me. However this is just my personal experience with them in my room, my hi-fi etc. They should be lovable for the right person.

Katie, Everyone has their own tastes and opinions. I am so glad you shared your experience. My guess is that the Yamaha house sound, and the Triangle house sound would not be the most synergistic combination. The amps I used a bit warmer in tone than the Yamaha. That Yamaha has a great sound but, for me I would pair with a warmer speaker like a Harbeth Monitor 30.2. Keep me posted on your journey. It sounds like you are pretty far along and just need to sort your speakers out. BTW, my daughter's name is Katie. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. @@OldGuyHifi Thanks for the response, and your daughter has a nice name hehe :) I am unfortunately not that far ahead with hi-fi, I seem to have a sound I like, Like my Devialet 200 and Kef ref 1, it was so smooth, What I like with the Yamaha is its power amp. I use the Eversolo z8 as a preamp atm, it,, It just sound better. The caveat is that it can be hard. But bass, the stage, and omg the imagery is fantastic. It's just that little thing that it is hard, when I go above 75db ish. It might not be all that neutral, but it is really good at low volume. I guess a little v curve going on there. Yamaha as a unit is too lean for my taste. Too forward, I sort of lose a lot of the music behind the speakers. W/O the pre, it comes back. So you can say I am in a testing phase hehe. Thanks again :)

Stereophile magazine once did an interesting thing. They compared a then current Usher speaker to a vintage Fried speaker from the 1970s; both were top rated bookshelf speakers in their day. They wanted to see just how much difference the engineering advancements were from the 1970s to the 1990s. At least that is what they billed it as. A similar thing could be done with the Triangle speakers. Taking inflation into account, comparing the Triangle speakers, to say, $2,000 speakers (their inflation equivelent) from the 1970s. Wait a minute, I don't think there were many $2,000 speakers back in the 1970s. And certainly not $2,0,000 bookshelf speakers. Bad idea... Speakers like this I would guess are good speakers, but how do they come up with a price like $7,000? The 2 drivers are not that costly, the crossovers or building the cabinet does not cost many hundreds of dollars. We are obviously in an age where speaker prices are based on their subjective sound quality (to the company's personnel; not their cost to build. Not just this manufacturer but virtually all of them. What's really interesting is back in the 1980s for instance, I couldn't imagine anyone dropping the inflationary equivelent of that kind of money on a speaker. Keep in mind that nowadays most people will not get to actually hear the speaker first, as most of the high end audio stores are gone. I guess people count on reviews, and send prices like 5, 7, 10 grand to people on the internet, advertising it for sale. A lot of people must love surprises. It's a bit mind boggling. I just couldn't imagine this happening decades ago.

Back in 1988 a pair of Wilson Watts (w/o stands) cost $5200.00 which according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI index is the equivalent of $14,000.oo today. I am not sure I get what you are saying. Believe me I am not trying to defend Triangles pricing policy but there are many factors involved in determining the cost of any good. Anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Thanks for sharing you thoughts.
@sidesup8286
@sidesup8286 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for responding. I think my statement was correct though. I said back in the "1970s" there were no real expensive bookshelf speakers that cost $2,000. As you say, the Wilson's in the latter 1980s started the trend of pricing small speakers well into the thousands of dollars. Actually it was 1987 that they came out. I still have the Stereophile review. But in the 1970s audio equipment pricing was mostly down to Earth. The most expensive speakers then that I recall were the Dayton Wright electrostatic, (Harry Pearson's reference), and the Beveridge model 2 electrostatic.Two very large electrostatic speakers. Of the real well known speaker brands, JBL caused some raised eyebrows when they came out with the JBL L166 Horizon. Very expensive for a bookshelf speaker back then; and then the Jubal model; but the L166 was not in the thousands.of dollars. What might have been the products that started the "lets see how high audiophiles will go" thing were the Koetsu phono cartridges. The Koetsu Black, (an ABSOLUTE SOUND favorite) among well heeled audiophiles, was priced at $660 in the early 1980s. At a time when most major companies top of the line stereo cartridges were priced around $150. It was the 1980s when prices started really leaving Earth's orbit, as manufacturers started to realize what quite a few audiophiles were willing to pay, because they wanted better sound so darn bad. As you say,, by the second half of the 1980s there were countless audio products priced many thousands of dollars, not just a handful or two. Products started to be priced according to their perceived subjective peeformance, and what they realized audiophiles were wiling to pay. $5,000 speakers became tagged as a good deal or good value by many reviewers and prices like that, (almost overnight) were seen aa the norm by many. But many viewed them as really stretching it, & stayed away from products like that, knowing there were great products which could couldpretty much compete at lower prices. But some took the bait and hook, that more expensive is better, and that continues to this day. "Sometimes" more expensive is better, and sometimes it is even worse than what you can buy cheaper. Status brands started popping up, like the one you mentioned, who didn't make one product within the reach of most people's wallets. Of course audiophiles are not being forced to pay those prices. There are alternatives if they want real quality. Most of the alternatives are in the vintage gear category. The Chinese electronics are trying to make a counter move at much lower prices. We'll see just what an impact that will make.

Agreed. I can buy them but I won't. Can't justify spending that much when there are really good speakers in the $2K range and even more values in the $1K and under. I do need new speakers and so I'm considering B&W 603 S3 when they go on sale. Also considering the Elac 3.0 bookshelves. After a while, you're just chasing that brass ring which is just out of reach.

@@perlman-t2g I do envy those that have the resources. These are better than anything that I have heard in this price range. Good luck on your hunt. Thx.

@@perlman-t2g I have the dynaudio evoke 10's and I love em but they are too chill. I would like to find something that isn't afraid to rock out. Insert Monitor Audio Silver 100 7g audition. B&Ws are always a safe choice
