Yes the man in green showed great respect and understanding of our culture by showing that gesture of silence. I also agree whole heartily with his knowledge and insight on war.. These are moral human traits of survival and kindness that are ingrained. It's surprising to many because we have all but forgotten them in this time, and to hear one say them is a morbid surprise. Hold these traits close to your being...and we will all be in harmony some fine day.

Remember that these people ( some of them ) never have to deal with it , they just " get along", Oddly enough the peace movement in the 60's and 70's wanted the same thing . The rock stars of the time would go to countries where meditation was common practice , come home and try to influence others . . . . . it never caught on " big time " so to say . Cheers

These "tribal" gentlemen have and display more manners, more honor for our Unknown Soldiers than most of us Americans who just "visit a historic memorial". It's wrong not to respect them as they are real gentlemen, even if we don't always see eye to eye with them or agree their ways of life. OUR society lacks that on so many levels! It is truly a shame that so many North Americans have forgotten the sacrifices made for them. You think it's bad in the USA, most Canadians practically ignore we have a military. It's an absolute shame and should be remedied immediately. As for these gentlemen, I was very pleasantly surprised by their reactions and couldn't have had more respect for them. It's truly wonderful how open their minds are to new things. I could only imagine how poor a reaction their native military ceremonies would get from North Americans.

Having served in the Marine Corps (a very long time ago), I appreciate these good men watching videos of, and learning a little bit about, American culture. My first impression of them is that they are open-hearted, kind, and respectful men. I am glad that they are willing to learn more about us. However, I think it is unfair that we do not also learn more about their culture. I have always been curious about other peoples and cultures, and would like to see Americans learn more about their tribal cultures, as well, if they would be willing to show us. It is only fair, after all, that we learn about them if they are willing to learn about us.

"Pomp and ceremony of the west"... have you ever seen the lowering of the flag ceremony conducted by India and Pakistan? The ridiculously absurd ceremonies and parades of North Korea and China? When it comes to baseless pomp and ceremony, the east are the undisputed champions. You clearly don't know what you are talking about, save the snide remarks for when grown ups aren't around mate.

@@shogun_arasaka : Could it be that you have brought your own connotation to the general term " pomp and ceremony " that is not shared or intended by the poster you are addressing. It appears to me to be more an expression of appreciation and high regard for the elder gentleman's perception of what he is observing. That post did not in any way imply the ceremony was baseless, but rather pointed out that the gentlemen was engaged in deciphering what the ceremony represents. I do not see that a snide comparison between east and west intended to elevate or denigrate one in relation to the other was intended.

From an American to all of you that reacted I would like to extend our thanks for respecting our traditions and what you said about our military soldiers who guard the tomb. I wish all of you could come and see them in person, the air is heavy and the tension fills it. It's solemn and sad, yet joyful and beautiful. Those entombed are home, we may not know who they are but they are all of our family, all America's sons and daughters, wives and husbands, brothers and sisters. That's why we give them such high regard, they represent anyone who is mia/pow, lost, buried out there, they belong to all our families. I agree fully with the gentleman in brown, we should have wars to fight against problems, not each other. But sir, as long as evil men and women live, we will have the need for war. My husband and I were taken aback by the gentleman that preserved the silence as they watched, then spoke on it as a respect. My husband is a Marine and he appreciates all of your respect for his brothers in arms. I respect and thank you, hoping one day we all can live in peace and be friends. I have seen this changing of the guard in person over 30 years ago and even sometimes now I'll watch it on video because I love the ceremony of it, the precision and significance. It's great to see others from a different culture observe it as they seemed to enjoy it as well. I served in Somalia and got to meet soldiers from Pakistan serving under the U.N. mission there and I was very pleased and impressed by them, very professional and courteous men. To me no matter where you are from, all soldiers have similar things in common and even if we don't speak each other's language we can still have an understanding about each other and a respect for the profession we have chosen. I especially enjoyed the comments from the elder of the men, I can tell from his age and his eyes that he's seen and been through alot. Peace and love and God's blessings!

I've been to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and I will admit I shed a few tears watching this ceremony, knowing that it was their duty as Tomb Guards to honor the men buried there and make sure the visitors did too. I've seen several videos where the Guards were forced to address the crowd for being rowdy and disrespectful up to and including taking a defensive posture against people who came too close. This is not a job that is taken lightly and these men are forever linked to this duty when they transfer to a new assignment. I have so much respect for them for being willing to brave blazing heat and blizzards and hurricanes to perform this duty day and night.

Love your reactions! One of the most important things to remember about this ceremony is that it is NOT just for show. Those who guard the tomb take it very seriously. I was fortunate to be there many years ago to watch the changing of the guard ceremony. One child crouched or sat part way through it and the Sergeant stopped very abruptly, turned, stuck his arm out with his palm open but directly at the child and said in a voice like what you heard here "Sir, please remaining standing throughout the ceremony!" That kid had to have been scared to death for being called out and their parents embarrassed for it. Like I said, they take this VERY seriously. You should watch the video of them when they have to interact with people who mistakenly cross the line without authorization. They will command you, loudly, to get behind the line/barrier. If you fail to realize they are talking to you, they will then walk forward a few steps very quickly while removing the safety from their rifle. I don't believe they are loaded, but it is a distinct sound no one wants to hear with a soldier walking toward them yelling to get back! This position is so important that your name will go up on a wall of honor for being part of the guard, but if you get into trouble in any way (militarily, with regular police, or something in civil court), your name is taken off and you can NEVER get it put back on...or, at least, no one has up to this point that I'm aware of.

I realized that war is a very societal thing and fluid as a concept when Mohammad Riaz Jutt was speaking on what I would consider "fatwas" at the end of the video and spoke of how useful war is concerning things like disease and poverty. In the western world, war is considered a thing one country does to another in retribution or for land annexation. To think of war in the way of a concentrated effort against something that hurts humanity is really only applicable in the USA's "war on drugs" which most people in the country consider a failed effort at this point. Thanks so much for all you do! From the East Coast of the US to you!
