Thank you so much for this video! This Doctor Who episode touched a lot of people, it was such a wonderful appreciation of an immense artist.....What makes me feels the most story of Van Gogh's life was the constant love and support that his brother Theo Van Gogh gave him. He never let him down, was always there when Vincent was depressed or believed his art would go nowhere. They wrote letters to each other almost every day. After Vincent died , Theo was so heartbroken he fell in a depression and passed away not long after. And then Theo's wife , who loved Vincent as well, did the incredible work of collecting all of the Vincent's paintings and their letters, and protect them. Because she believed he was a great artist and that his art would be loved some day! There is so much pain in his life, but he was also surrounded by so much love....

The sunflowers painting in the Nation Gallery in London was one of the last paintings of his she sold (in 1924, I think). She had a hard time parting with it because she and her son loved it so much, but sold it "for Vincent's glory".

"For me, Van Gogh is the greatest painter of all. Certainly the most famous of the great painters across all eras. And the most beloved. His mastery of color - simply unique. He transformed the great pain, the agony of his life full of suffering into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to depict, but to depict full of passion and pain the ecstasy, joy and glory of our world, no one has done that before him and perhaps no one ever will again. In my opinion, this strange, wild man who wandered lonely through the fields of Provence is not only the greatest painter the world has seen, I think he is also one of the greatest men who ever lived."

I'm Dutch so never really grew up on it. Eventhough we have BBC. I moved to the UK in 2003. My ex was really hyped about the reboot as he grew up with it. He was 10 years older than I so he properly grew up with it. I did not get into it and he hated me for it🤣 but then Torchwood came out and eventhough it was a totally different vibe, I got in to it. Mostly because of those very poignant moments in between the madness.

as a native Dutchman i have to commend your pronounciation of Dhr V. van Gogh's name he is a much appreciated and often referenced artist that changed the dutch art culture immensily over time his work outshone his predecessors his work inspires those who seek to make art and his story helps those to live a more honest life

I saw an episode of QI (as an American who likes QI, a British Show) and I always found the british pronunciation to be really strange, and they had on a Dutchman to pronounce it correctly and it is actually closer to the American way of saying Can Gogh than the weird British "Van Gock". It's more like Van Goke, right?
@roddo1955
@roddo1955 Жыл бұрын
@@jenbcamping the difficulty lies in how we pronounce the letter G and the combination of 'CH' fir English speakers. Think more along the lines of Hebrew/Arabic for those sounds. It's a bit guttural. The pronunciation 'Van Gock' is pretty close, except for the 'k' sound at the end. The G at the beginning and pronouncing 'van' like the car. 'Van' in Dutch almost rhymes with 'Fun' in english. It means 'of'. As in; 'Vincent of Goch' The Dutch pronunciation of Van Goch rhymes with 'Run Gock'. The sound of 'H' comes closest for the guttural sound. But it's more like a cats' hiss. Just look up a random Dutch video and you'll hear how we pronounce the 'g'. Tip: The artist Glennis Grace has a video where she sings the song 'Afscheid'. She has a 'Amsterdam' accent with a very pronounced 'g' and there are lots of those sounds throughout the song. I always feel like clearing my throat after hearing it😄 Edit: QI...you are a person of good taste. Stephen Fry is a hero of mine. But i have caught him out on inaccuracies. About the Netherlands, in particular. 😉

This episode of Dr Who resonates with so many because not only is this a scene of someone with the ability to give another struggling man a look at how much positivity their life blessed the world despite their life being so tragic and hard, it also gives a catharsis to the viewer who may be struggling with something similar whether for themselves or a loved one who doesn’t see the bigger effects they have on the world for those near them. That however small we feel our lives are, and insignificant in the moment, our life will affect someone else in some way some day if we simply try to live. Will we become famous for our story to be told accurately like Van Gogh, or will we be simply inspiration for a cautionary tale? Either way, no one’s life is insignificant as long as they try to live. I wish I could have a similar moment with my brother in law to show him how much we miss him now, and how hurt he left us when he took his own life.

As an artist myself, this episode and particularly this scene affects me with tears every time that I see it. Although, I don't think that my own work will see the future that Van Gogh's had. I know very well of the depression that he is portrayed of having. It can get bad. After this episode was shown, there was an announcement on screen of help lines for anyone who has issues with depression. I have not had professional help and have almost reached the other side in winning the battle. Others may not be so well placed in the fortitude that I have had. I urge them, that if you feel that you do need help, to find it. It may help save you. Sometimes, anything, even the smallest thing, can make a difference.

oh this video was lovely! i love that scene so much. i'd really love to see an episode of them reacting to his art, where they could look at it more closely. i think the WAY he painted was so vibrant, and it's harder to see while so small. he used dozens of colors in small strokes and i love just looking at the brushstrokes sometimes. also, having them react to pointillism (making paintings out of many many many dots) in general would be wonderful! my favorite van gogh paintings could be considered pointillism, but he did also do other brushwork styles.

Many think Van Gogh's illness may have been the result of an artist's habit of putting brushes in their mouths before storing them...being made of animal hair, the cleaning process dried them out and by putting spit on them they could control their shape. The residual paint, being full of toxic chemicals, caused his instability. It's a thought. Going without food is not a healthy thing to do, either.

Thank you for this video. This is the first time I’ve seen Dr. Who. There is a well known song called Stary Stary Night about Van Gogh and his painting. It’s last line says:” But I could have told you Vincent, this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you”. It was written and sung by Don McLean. There is a neat movie , too, about Van Gogh. It was entirely made by artists. It is animated, by using his paintings. I think it is called “ Loving Vincent”. He and his brother, who suffered from the same mental illness as Vincent, kept in constant contact through letter writing.

No one (that we know of) has ever lived forever. Everyone dies at some point. But, as long as even one person remembers them, they are never truly gone. You do not need to be rich or famous, you just need to make a difference in the lives of others. By doing so, you will live on in their memories. That is something we can all achieve if we so choose. Find someone your care about, hug and kiss them, and carry your memories on through each other. What a wondeful thing the internet is that we can connect with others on the other side of the world and spread such immortality though personal connections. The reveal that despite having been able to show Vincent the impact and legacy he had, he still committed suicide. No matter the joy and perspective and impact you can have on another person, there's no such thing as a 'simple fix' for mental health.

This is a great part with great sentiment from DR Who. I am curious about what was said about the Elephant being something more worth when/after it dies a bit like artists and things. Is that meant in some kind of the same way? or is it something else about the Elephants or something more culturally? I know Elephants are clearly seen or will be seen in different lights over there compared to someone like myself. Elephants are supposed never forget. As the myth goes lol.

I didn't knew that saying wasn't that universal but they say an Elephant's tusks are worth more than it's soul.

@@TRYBALS Ahh I see. Thanks for elaborating. I wasn't sure if it was a more of a spiritual or religious thing (like some animals are regarded as more holy or things like that), or a more practical sense of say it's value as food or as in this case, sadly Ivory. I guess in a way your explanation is a little of both as it is, or sounds more based on the value of the Ivory but then you say "Soul". A very profound and sadly deep meaning. Thankfully, from my look out on life here. Ivory is a massive no no :D and has been for decades I guess.

Now that they know who Van Gogh is, I would dearly love to hear them responding to a folk song about him... this is a live performance, just a singer and guitar- but it made me cry. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2SnhqauhK6Nn5Y

Besides everything else everyone has already said, I want to note: Abdul strikes me as an incredibly contained man who may or may not approve of what he's seeing, and gives well-thought feedback in spite of his approval or disapproval. I'd like to hear some of HIS stories.

IMO, there's no wrong answer as to your favourite Doctor or companion. (For example, mine is 10 and Rose Tyler - but not ONLY when 10 was with Rose, to be clear) That being said, 11 and Amy Pond will ALWAYS have been the ones who did this...

This might be a terrible remark, but when Mohammad is talking about the family of Van Gogh deserving a reward, I thought of T Van Gogh... These guys seem blissfully unaware (or take no interest) of that. Which is a good thing in my mind. Of course the video maker must have known. I love these videos whichever way.

It's s a myth than Van Gogh shot himself or cut off his ear. In both instances he protected those who've hurt him. A man cut his ear off in a duel and the duels were already illegal at the time so he didn't want him to go to jail for something they both did. The case of shooting wasn't as well-researched before but as to the current knowledge, he protected two local boys who were constantly messing with him and ended up shooting him (probably by accident). He didn't want to tell who shot him even on his deathbed, only with time people found clues to what happened. Others assumed that he shot himself because they've considered an artist and a loner as "weird". Basically, his main "mental problem" was that he was too good for the world he lived in. Aside from the factual occurrences, it's still one of my favorite "Doctor Who" episodes about one of my favorite artists. The actor who played him was amazing and I still can't watch it without crying.

@@nzrockboi The subject was a person who was valued after their death. Do you think they were saying it was good that Van Gogh was treated badly while he was alive? You clearly lack listening comprehension and the ability to infer meaning from context. Not to mention you are making snap judgements, seeing the worst in people and probably also being racist and classist to boot.

@@revangerang He said an elephant is better dead, Regardless of how you see VG, if you think an elephant is more important dead than alive then you have any excuse to kill them, or work the elephant until its dead. I wonder how they honour the elephant in its death because it did a great job.

Elephants aren't native to Pakistan so it's just a saying that is more popular in India. And it's not just a saying but also a fact for the poachers in India and Africa.

I do not believe he had family He also cut his ear off I believe he went crazy due to the paints he used. Cobalt and other colors in the day had toxins in them. A lot of successful painters back then had mental issues due to this.
