We can't forget our past or shut the door on it. From our mess comes our message. From hopelessness come hope. If we are armed with the facts about ourselves we can help someone else. Before that can happen, we need to be honest with ourselves. Be authentic, do the hard work and accept the results. If you can do that you will avoid all the misery that gives you these regrets. You can always start over, but you need to accept the past and present to see a better tomorrow.

Think about His life. He sang that song shortly after his wife died. He's been watching all his friends and family die, one by one, all things familiar grow strange, all his friends pass away... Johnny Cash was all alone when he sang this song. He had no one else, and this song was his last message to the next generation who is already growing old. Weight and substance means more than we know. So much more than we know, but those of us who live on will learn how much it means.

Johnny’s wife June Carter Cash was in the video with him. She died 3 months (May 2003) after filming the video. She was the love of his life. Johnny followed her only 4 months later in September 2003. His cause of death is listed as complications from diabetes, but I truly believe he died of a broken heart.

My mother passed in 2021 and my grandfather passed just 3 months later, officially from complications of covid along with his numerous other health issues, but the whole family knows it was the loss of my mother that pushed him over the edge. He was devastated at losing his youngest daughter and baby and his heart just couldn’t take it.

Johnny's life was filled with joy and misery, and like most of us from his own action. Knowing the richness of Johnny's life and some of the depths of his pain, I wouldn't trade my own miseries to have had his life. Upon reflection, I can admire his accomplishments, but understand his journeys pain after my own disappointments. Even the author of this song appreciated the feeling and expression Johnny put into this song. Few can truly understand the depths of pain until they've lived it. The comforts of our lives bounty is nothing without having those we loved around us to enjoy it also. In this hardened world, people we loved walk away from our lives too easily or are taken away by their death. Our only choice is to start over.

I honestly don’t know which was more fulfilling…listening to Johnny sing this again (not the first time I’ve listened to it), or hearing the elder man understand it, completely and with no difficulty, from half a world away from Johnny’s, and from a completely different cultural perspective. The emotional impact that it had on the two of them was both boldly honest, and palpable. I’ve watched literally dozens of reaction videos to this song. This one is easily the best I’ve seen. I can only hope that someone might express to these two men that their efforts here are both appreciated and respected.

Cash came from abject poverty. He started picking cotton with his family at five. At 8 or 9 his brother died in a really nasty work accident, for which he felt guilty to his death. He was an addict for much of his life, and spent many a night in prison. He knew hard times. I am a Man's Man, I have a past in the military and as a carpenter, I like to fight with swords, hunting, fishing. When I listen to this song tears roll down my cheeks uncontrolledly. It hits and expresses all the pain inside that we keep under control otherwise to not fall apart. The older man here gets it. He gets it. The song was written by Trent reznor and performed by his band Nine Inch nails, and he was initially reluctant to let Cash do a cover. When he heard it, he said, "This is your song now". Cash's daughter heard it (or was present, I am not sure), she said, "It sounds like you are saying goodbye" Cash replied; "Maybe I am", a few months later his wife passed (she is the woman in the video), and after that he himself died. It was a goodbye.

There’s a story that goes June was not meant to be in the video. She was standing on the prop staircase, off camera, observing Johnny do his thing. One of the crew noticed the emotion on her face and in her eyes while she watched her once-vital, now feeble husband do what he loves, and turned one of the cameras on her. She was unaware she was being filmed, and the expression on her face is pure and without pretense. I hope my wife looks at me like that in my eighties.

We must really think hard about what we prioritize in life’s journey. Also: I am Armenian American diaspora, the inflection and desire to be understood and heard in your voice and the similar words to Armenian that I noticed made me think of my elders discussing sacred matters of humanity. Thank you for this. Your wisdom and experience shine through in your thoughts about the song, the honesty you have to call the main topic of the song “regret” makes you much like Johnny Cash -brave. The first time I heard Johnny Cash singing this song on the radio I was driving down a major interstate highway. My eyes started to well up with tears and I had to pull over and park in for a couple minutes in the emergency lane to get myself together. It still sometimes has the same effect on my. R.I.P Johnny.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote this about something totally different sometime in his 20's. It's truly a totally different song when done by Nine Inch Nails. Same song, different perspective.

Johnny's is a completely different perspective, an old man at the end of his life who went through that same battle, and looking back on all of the things he did to those he loved with regret.

Greatest cover I ever heard. It's for all of our lives. When you start getting older and you think about people you clashed with or loved and they went before you did. Things that you wished you said or didn't say. Just pure mortality. It sucks....but it is the rollercoaster.

The elder man really does understand what Johnny Cash was singing about! Life is vibrant when you are young, but with age, those things simply fade....what you are left with is memories of what used to be...but it takes on a deeper meaning! I really appreciate the wisdom in these tribal people!!! Sure makes sense as I still try to understand my aging myself. Really liked this!

I can't listen to this song without crying. It's so beautiful and painful. I loved seeing how it moved them. I'm kind of surprised you haven't had them listen to Pink Floyd yet. Talk about moving. Every song of theirs is more beautiful than the last, and the live shows are absolutely amazing, especially the Pulse concert. *Comfortably Numb* from Pulse is legendary and ends with what is generally considered to be one of the greatest guitar solos ever recorded. 💜🎸🤘🏽

Johnny Cash lived a life that many people know. He struggled with addiction at points, which strained many of his relationships and drove people away from him. His songs have that familiar bravado because he sings from the heart about his experiences, rather than a fantastic spectacle. Like many idols of older generations, he struggled. He struggled desperately. And his talent saw him through. So in his late life, he spent a significant amount of time trying to repent and repair his relationships.

Johnny Cash is an American icon who breaks the barriers between music genres. Everyone knows Cash. He helped many musicians get their start. I grew up with his music. My father and he had the same job in the military. And he looks a lot like my dad in younger years. Dad will be 92 in 2 months. And hearing this reminds me of him and his life.

Trent released this song when he was 29. This video really expresses the genius of his writing. Trent's genius is matched by Johnny's soul poured into his performance. Even Trent recognized and adored this version of his song. Two great artists came together to this is the result. I do wish though, that these men were aware of the whole story behind this performance because their honesty and genuine thoughtfulness is so very clear. I'd love to hear more of their thoughts.

i know you know but, the song was written by Trent Reznor of Nine inch Nails. when it was released in 94', i liked the song and understood its meaning. when Cash redid it, he put the emotion in the song that made me feel it. i am now an old man myself and the song resonates me with on a lot of levels. absolutely beautiful song.

Him singing this near the end of his life, is like the song “send in the clowns!” It’s only meant to be sang later in life by people who bleed from every word. Their lives are coming to a close. So the song takes on a totally different meaning. He was a unique and amazing man! So was his wife who was also a singer. May they both rest in peace!

JR Cash DID NOT WRITE THIS SONG. That whole album, which JR was famous for doing covers, he made them his own, but Rick Rubin thought he should do this song for one of his last performances. He is missing June, she was everything to him. He never did Heroin or time in prison. He gave that impression, and he was well well loved. I knew him when I was a small child. He was friends with my grandmother. He was in town , in NE. Oklahoma. He put on a free concert for the town as well. A local Mayor built him a Car. Named it Patches and gave it to JR Cash. It was in his Museum, for the longest the car sat out on old Rt. 66 and you could stop and see it. There is a sign as you enter that town. It says.."Welcome To Cash Country". Roy Clark owned a mansion and lots of property there, even had an airport. The two were obviously friends.

Rick Rubin explains (I think in his Joe Rogan interview) how he got Johnny Cash to cover this song ONLY because of the lyrics. It was originally written by Trent Reznor about his heroin addiction at 19 years old, but when you hear an old man sing those lyrics, the song takes on a whole new meaning and feeling.

When Trent Reznor wrote this song, he was singing it from a different place. It was dark and brooding. And then comes JR Cash. Similar reasons, but it was as though he was singing his eulogy. He knew his time was short, and this was the song to be remembered for all time. The end of this video always hits me pretty hard. When he closes the lid on the piano and wipes it down, it's as if to say "Goodbye". There will never be another Johnny Cash. The love and hurt that June Carter had in her eyes is a love we all want. She tragically passed shortly after the video was made, and he passed not too much later. "When Reznor was asked if Cash could record a rendition of the NIN song, the rock frontman noted he was flattered but wondered if the song might come across as too “gimmicky.” But the music video and Cash’s recording assuaged his worries. Said Reznor, “I pop the video in, and wow… Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore… It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. [Somehow] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning - different, but every bit as pure.”
