Back in the 60's mom would grab a double decker can of La Choy chop suey to serve for dinner, I think she added more meat. We had it served over rice, the crunchy noodles are just a garnish topping, not meant to be the base for the sauce to be put on. Personally I never liked the crunchy noodles. She also made her own egg rolls.

I've never had Chop Suey with soft noodles. Always white rice or the hard chop suey noodles.

The story I heard was, some customers came in late to a Chinese restaurant. The cook didn't a lot left, so he just threw what he had together and called it Chop Suey.

Actually the dish goes way back to the 19th century and the railroad camps, where Chinese workmen used whatever meat and vegetables they could get hold of to make something approximately like what they ate in the old country.

Yeah I remember the La Choy chop suey. My gran used to make it. I always liked the crunchy fried noodle bits in it but yeah it was usually over rice ❤️

That looks more like American Chow Mein.The Chop Suey I have eaten and also made has alot of bean sprouts and cabbage and is served over rice.Both are similar and not too hard.Stir Fry some boneless,skinless chicken,onions,preferably scallion,sliced carrots,sliced cabbage and bean sprouts which can be made at home by sprouting small beans,usually Mung(Moong) beans,The sauce is soy sauce,chicken broth and some minced ginger and garlic.Simmer it then thicken with starch ,cornstarch will work or any fine textured starch,flour will work but change the taste a little.Serve over fried noodles(chow mein).boiled noodle(lo mein) or cooked rice.Chinese cooking the meat is cooked til tender and done but not heavily browned and the vegetables should still have a bit of crunch,not be squishy.

Chop Suey was invented in America by Chinese cooks who ran out of some ingredients and still had hungry customers, so they took lots of vegetables and used noodles and came up with a different dish! We can get it with chicken, or shrimp in it if we want some meat.

I love Chinese, or in this case Chinese-American food. I normally go to the local Chinese restaurant every month month to eat. They don't make bao (stuffed steamed buns) any more sadly. The sweetened red bean paste is a lightly sweet dessert. They can also be stuffed with meat. Very tasty! I miss them 😢

I like Chop Suey too. I prefer Chicken Chop Suey myself. I buy it at the local Chinese restaurant and eat it about every two weeks. Maybe I'll have it for dinner! Someone mentioned a darker screen. My screen is dark as well.

Chop Suey was invented by Asians in the USA, it is not a traditional Asian dish. It's kind of the Chinese version ratatouille, a mix of leftovers, which is a very common concept around the world and source for the creation of many amazing dishes, but I think I prefer authentic Chinese food.

It was developed before a lot of Americans knew about Chinese food. It was all about customers for the food. I read an article in The Guardian news site about the oldest Chinese restaurant still open in the US. It's in Sacramento, California and was opened before 1900. In addition to Chop Suey and more authentic Chinese food they also sell hamburgers and sandwiches.

It is authentic Chinese food. It just doesn't come from China. But since Chinese 'invented' it, it is authentic Chinese food. Chinese have emigrated all over the world and just about every country they have been 'inventing' food with the ingredients they could get hold of. Many are not available in China, just as many Chinese ingredients are not available in other parts of the world. You would be surprised by the amount of 'Chinese' dishes you can get at a restaurant which are completely unknown in China and I can assure you that many real Chinese dishes do not agree with our taste buds either.

Chef!!!!! Apparently you put your foot in that dish when you made it!!!!!!😁 They ALL wanted the recipe to be able to recreate "lo mein" at home🙂 (sorry, but this isn't chop suey. Easy mistake. It's all good though). 😏 Each telling of how they want to savor the flavor - is a testament to your cooking skills because it's a relatively easy recipe, but some people still find a way to mess it up when they attempt to make it themselves. I'm so glad that they enjoyed the meal.
