Correct! They were not really served Beef Stew as it is served in the US. A stew is a thicker "soup" with more hearty ingredients (bigger pieces). And it is served with a bread product, for accompanying the meal and dipping in the liquid. That is why some of their comments about it are spot on..... because what they were not serves was not how it is really served. If I was invited to someone's home here in the US and they said they were having Beef Stew, and was served THIS.... no. That is not Beef Stew. ;)

Leftover stew
@bunnyslippers191
@bunnyslippers191 2 жыл бұрын
My dad used to call soup made with some stewing beef and many different vegetables "refrigerator soup." He would come to the table, take a look at his bowl of soup and say, "Oh, I see you cleaned all the leftovers out of the refrigerator today!" even when there were no leftovers (or only a few) in the pot.
@pietrayday9915
@pietrayday9915 2 жыл бұрын
LOL - my family did much the same thing growing up - if there were a bunch of leftover vegetables, mom would just gather mix all together, add a little browned ground beef, and then cook some noodles to top it with, and call it "goulash". You can't fool me, mom - it's "leftover stew!" :D In the 1970s economy, when a lot of cupboards were bare, that sort of make-do-with-whatever-is-around thing was a life-saver. That "goulash" wasn't very good food, but it was edible and I don't remember complaining (unlike some of the other experiments my mother tried.) To this day, I keep several big cans of "Veg-All" mixed vegetables (potatoes, carrots, corn, celery, onions, that sort of thing) in my cabinet for much the same purpose: I don't normally have any leftover vegetables sitting around, but whenever I feel like getting creative with leftovers, a can of Veg-All and some rice or pasta are fantastic stuff to use for turning almost any leftover or canned meat into a stew, soup, or casserole - just add gravy or cream-of-cheese soup (for example) for a sauce!

I have a home-cooked meal recommendation for Dr. Tahir Nawab: southern-style chicken and dumplings. The base is like chicken soup, but the small flour dumplings thicken it up a bit. The dumpling dough is like American biscuits, rolled out and cut into 1-inch squares, then added to the chicken and stock to cook for about 20 minutes. It's a basic recipe but very filling like beef stew.

Beef stew is an amazing dish enjoyed by many. There are thousands of variations, but like in the video, it usually consists of Beef, Potatoes, and Carrots. The rest is up to the person cooking it. There are tomato-based sauces, Beer based sauces, and Broth based sauces, all of which have many variations within. The real test is if it tastes good. Usually in the U.S., we serve it with bread and butter, and mainly (in the Northern states like I reside) in the Autumn and Winter seasons as it's very heavy, hearty, and delicious. We usually make it in a slow-cooker, which takes at least 8 hours to be done. I personally fry the beef on high temperature before it is added to the stew to add flavor, but it's not necessary sometimes. Besides spices, I've noticed that a lot of food around the world is VERY similar. Glad these guys enjoyed beef stew, even though I don't know the technique/recipe used. Great video! Glad you guys enjoyed it!

Ahhh, stew, one of the greatest comfort foods. We eat it with some sort of bread too, we just don't use the bread as a utensil. 😄 My favorite is hot from the oven sourdough bread slathered with butter. Chicken and dumplings is a good suggestion - the kind of dumplings made from a drop biscuit dough, so they're fluffy on the inside. They need to be dropped onto simmering broth and chunks of cooked chicken, and covered tightly for about 20 minutes, so they steam and cook all the way through. Otherwise they stay too solid inside, and it's like eating rubber! It takes a little practice so you get it right. But there are plenty of recipes online. Beef Stroganoff is another good dish. Not hard, and it's made to go over rice or noodles. Swiss steak and smothered chicken are very good, too. Google home cooking, and you'll find tons of recipes!

This is a typical meal and comfort food that I crave once it starts to get cold. It usually is just a bit wetter with gravy. The meat is cooked until almost falling apart, then vegetables (onions, celery, carrots, peas and sometimes mushrooms) are added. I often eat mine with a piece of buttered cornbread on the side, a hot buttered biscuit or a hot tortilla (similar to roti), but we still use a spoon. Sometimes we drop and simmer uncooked biscuit dough in a chicken stew, for a popular southern dish called chicken and dumplings or we put the stewed beef or chicken into crust and bake it as a "pot pie".

I love that a dish I’ve never given much respect to is loved by those that don’t have access to this type of food every day.

I agree, it needs bread to eat with it. I always make rolls or cornbread to go with ours.

You can also add sweet potatoes at the end of cooking. Only takes from 5 - 10 minutes for them to cook depending on the size you cut them. Doesn't take long for them to cook away.

I put corn and celery in my beef stew and cook it for 10 hours in the crock pot. Potatoes, carrots, celery, corn and maybe a few other things, depending on what's available. And, of course, the beef, lol. I call it my not so nearly world famous beef stew.

Yes, Americans cook this food at home. I now use an InstantPot to cook it and it's quick and easy. One of my favorite meals. I grew up on stew at least once per week.

Choudhury made a good point. The people of Pakistan, India and Bangladesh use pretty much the same ingredients as Europeans and Americans, just in a different style. Whereas Africans use completely different ingredients, such as cassava. And East Asians (e.g. Chinese and Japanese people) use even more different ingredients that the Tribal People Try team probably wouldn't be familiar with at all.
