And, I love split pea soup. I get canned soup and always add whatever fresh veggies that I want into it, usually carrots and potatoes that I've cooked first. I would love to see them enjoying one of their beloved foods with a piece of roti! Thank you ever so much for introducing the world to these most excellent gentlemen! I think the Quebecois might disagree. More likely.... Peas, lentils, pulses and grains were staples in most diets, european and indigenous North America, and elsewhere. The early French Quebecois voyageurs and fur traders learned much from the North American indigenous people, including the necessity to travel light but sustainable. Hence, pea soup.

How I make split pea soup. Add cold water and dried split peas, laurel leaves, some pork chops, some thick slices of bacon and som cuts of beef into a big pan and boil it, once boiling put the heat low and let it simmer for about an hour. Meanwhile chop celeriac, carrots, union and a potato into small (dice size) chunks. After about an hour take out the meats and add the chopped ingredients. Chop the meats into smaller pieces (not too small) and remove any bones (if they are in the chops). Add the meats back into the soup and let it simmer for an other hour. Then I add some dried vegetables bouillon and salt and pepper to taste. Let it simmer for half an hour and lastly add some choped parsley and simmer it for an other half an hour remove the laurel leaves and enjoy your meal

This dish did NOT originate in Canada! It originated from the Flemish/Dutch people long before Canada was a country. It'singredients vary for personal taste. My family cooks the dried peas in lots of chicken broth, garlic, salt to taste, black pepper and diced shallots. My mom, who was half Dutch, sometimes added diced turkey ham. Here in the USA, it's often served with a hot, grilled cheese sandwich to dip, like that garlic bread. I love a sharp cheddar on my sandwich and maybe some American cheese. SO good! It had dried split pea's, that were boiled. Then it was cooked for several hours. With a ham hock, some scraps of ham meat, a lil it of bacon fat added for flavor. With a bit of salt and black pepper as well. What I had in the past far more resembled, what the Brits call mushy pea's.

You know how people call matzo ball soup "Jewish penicillin"? Pea soup is the "French Canadian penicillin" or "Quebecois penicillin". It has a long history in Canada, brought over by "les habitant", the French settlers. From a Food Network article, "This classic stick-to-your-bones soup has been a Quebecois favourite for over 400 years. For good reasons, too: pure comfort made from easy-to-preserve ingredients. Split pea soup is made of yellow split peas, ham hock, vegetables, and thyme, and it’s usually served with bread,” says Ottawa Chef Marc Miron, who is an expert on the dish. “Split pea soup is a dish that can be served as a starter or as a main.” " Personally, I don't like it. 🤷‍♀️😅 Edit: I'm not sure of the recipe used here, but maybe because they used beef, it's darker? Generally the other veg is cut much smaller, and the veg is often blended so that it has a smoother texture. It's usually a yellow colour. Maybe they didn't have yellow peas either. But that's ok. They got to have a yummy soup either way!

Usually you add bacon/ham/ or beef to pea soup to make it taste better. But it still tastes good with only vegetables, if seasoned well. I like potato soup as well. Also, broccoli and cheese soup, and cambells tomato soup with grilled cheese is good too.

I grew up near Buellton, California which is the home of Andersen's famous split pea soup. What you have served here bears no resemblance to split pea soup. It looks delicious but it is not split pea soup!

I love pea and ham soup on cold winter nights, I break up Scottish oat cakes and put them in the soup, they soak up the liquid to make the soup thicker and more hearty. I also eat my oat cakes with butter and cheese like one does when eating cream crackers.

I love a good bowl of split pea soup. my grandmother used to make it so it reminds me of her :) I like to cook peas till they are soft and blend them in the blender with a cap full of olive oil or even sesame oil and it makes for a very creamy soup. (you season it too but that's the base) have they ever tried : wanton soup? matzoh ball soup? french onion soup? I think I'm hungry lol

He's not wrong. This was a filling poor people's food. We simmer it with a leftover ham bone for more flavor. I do understand they do not eat pug. But a smoked turkey leg I have also used.❤

It doesn't snow all year in Canada. We get all the seasons, and the summers are getting hotter and dryer (global warming), but winters seem to last longer. And we don't live in igloos and drive on sleds.

Mr.Rana….yes sir. It is darling bread. It makes everything taste better. Vegetable soup is a family favorite in our house. I normally make cornbread to have with it. Now I will have to try to serve it with garlic bread.

I don’t think I’ve ever had split pea soup with potatoes and carrots. It’s probably better that way though.

Canadian pea soup has yellow split peas, onion, carrot, and salt pork or a ham bone. Plus chicken or vegetable stock, seasoning, thyme, salt, pepper, maybe a bay leaf. You can add celery if you have some, or leave out the ham if you prefer. But the basis is always yellow split peas, carrots and onions.

I grew up eating split pea soup often. We would typically put a ham bone in it after Easter meal(Ukrainian) to add more flavor.

We had pea soup at least twice a month in the winter, when I was growing up... always with mom's fresh garlic rolls or cheddar bay biscuits (slightly spicy cheese scones).

I believe they'd enjoy most traditional home-cooked "poor people" dishes from Western countries (modified as per dietary restrictions), as there are quite a lot of similarities with their own traditional foods, and the differences that exist shouldn't be too outlandish. Hearty, simple food has universal appeal, especially among people who do physical work all day like these gentlemen.

I love split pea soup and make every Fall. Mine must have ham, carrots, onion and lots of cumin, also using chicken stock really boosts the flavor. Ideal on a cold evening! Next time I am in a restaurant I will request the darling bread!

I grew up mostly vegetarian (pescetarian really) & I was so embarrassed when I ordered it in public, not knowing it usually has ham. Anyway, my favorite is cooking the split peas with crunchy veggies & a variety of lentils.

Dried peas are used Mr Balock, not fresh ones. With onions, carrots, and meat (not pork), with preferred seasonings, it's quite good. We like smoked turkey in ours. We do like ours a little less thick. Mr Rana, it only snows in Canada during the winter, not year round thank goodness. I live just an hour south of the Canadian border, and I would have moved long ago if it snowed all year!
