With 5 renditions of tunes selected from the recording of Bessie Smith and Clara Smith, we give an introduction to these 2 queens of 1920's blues and some of the the musicians that accompany them. We attempt to share some history and context for the powerful voices and stylings that inspire us today. By weaving together our research within a mini concert of songs, we hope to impart our deep respect for the music and the people who created it.

What a wonderful afternoon I’ve had listening to you two amazing ladies. Thank you so much it’s a 3rd or 4th time now and it just gets better and better it’s like I’ve been taken back in time. My mam and dad both were blind pianists and played in pubs in North East England for a living they died in 82&83

Great historical review of some beloved jazz artists. Shaye, it was special--a delight--to hear that little comment about your Dad and see his photo! Thank you so much for including that!! Send us more about your historical family!

Shaye plays so many instruments so very well, yet the best might be her voice. Clear, clean, lovely tone and pitch, she blends wonderfully and supports with style. Kudos, young lady, you truly are a treasure.

I adore you two ladies ( and Meschiya Lake / Erika Lewis) and your associated bands. I've spent many hours listening and watching you not only on youtube but also@ Spotted Cat...Royal St....and all over N.O.. Although I currently live in L.A. I have (and plan on continuing) to always return to N.O.....In fact I have been seriously considering relocating there for long term. I love the music....the food (everytime I'm there I manage to end up blossoming into a Zepplin).....and the people. You woman and your peers do a great service to the history of not only N.O. but to our country as a whole by preserving the early traditions and work of so many which have enabled N.O. to proudly be labled "The Cradle of ALL American Music." No matter what genre it may be, if one traces its family tree back to its influences and place of conception its Great Great Grandmother at one time strolled the streets of my beloved VIEUX CARRE'. Thank you for all of it. I'll catcha again soon (once this damn pandemic settles) down around Frenchman or Royal St.....The French Quarter would not be itself without the sounds of these acts of historical musical expressions of life.

This is another jazz program that interest me. I am delighted to know the background of the songs you present here as well as your beautiful clear voice, Sarah. Both of you are terrific. Keep on with music you love and so pleasant to listen to. ... Love from your fan in Thailand.

Ms. Cohn has a really strong left hand. I’m guessing that’s where she developed her fabulous sense of time that takes her band to such a high level. She mentions Benny Carter; his command of multiple instruments at the highest level is a baseline for her. Years ago, I was able to attend a rare concert of him playing his big band compositions. John Lewis and Lew Tabackin were in the band, among others. I wept for the first half hour.

Thank's Sarah and Shaye, that was really fun to watch! Despite being an avid listener of music of all styles, early Jazz is something which has been a bit of a blind spot for me until recently. I clicked on a Tuba Skinny video, little realising that I would be pitched head first into a whole new world of music.... and I'm loving it! Keep doing what you do and hopefully one day I'll get to see you both perform live. Take Care, Dave.

2 Mistresses ("master" obviously doesn't apply here) of blues/ragtime/jazz, etc!!! I respect their respect for their predecessors. Among other gifts I'm impressed with Shaye's ability to be a skilled multi-instrumentalist, i.e. coronet, piano, and violin, and probably others I'm not aware of. What a gift to those of us far from New Orleans but who know great, music.
