Watched this whole offering on Darbar Player on the evening of his passing. It is probably the best Miyan Malhar that my ears will ever hear and one of the most powerful performances that these two great souls have ever sang together. Pandit Rajan Mishra's voice drenched your entire existence, your soul, in the rain garlands of Malhar. Scholars of this music would say that Miyan Malhar brings rain to the skies, but, I say: this Miyan Malhar brought rain to my heart, where the thunder, the lightening, the coolness of the wind were all happening within. A good singer can sing Miyan Malhar so that clouds gather and rainfall begins, but a singer who dedicates his singing to the source of rain itself can sing so that the Malhar is felt within you. That is the peak to where Pandit Rajan & Sajan Mishra have always brought us. And the Divinity that Pandit Rajan Mishraji brought upon the stage, with his love, humbleness, humility, and joy of music will forever be remembered. For me, he always represented that very joy of music. The way he interacted with musicians while on stage was like a child who was in another world. He allowed Raags to envelop him in their essence, and he is just witnessing and enjoying how they are singing through him. He loved that state of being and everyone in the audience could see it. Such a musician he was! We will all still learn from him as our Guru, and, for musicians, he will always be a role-model of musical surrender. It is so great that human beings have art for souls like these to be immortal in their service to humanity! And it is also great to have Darbar, who preserves their music at such a high quality, enabling everyone to experience each musical soul within their reality and depth!
