Wondering why they're kept up off the ground? Flooding? Also, love the design of the stairs so you can get wheelbarrows up and down them; it's an ingenious idea.

Looking at the structure it is cooler to keep them off the ground. Also manure drops through and can be used as fertilizer on crops. I am sure this cuts down on parasites as well.
