These boxes are absolutely amazing! I'm in the business and take great pleasure from repairing very old fountain pens and have come across several boxes like these in my antique store travels, but have never ventured far enough out of my comfort zone to actually buy one! Now, after watching these two videos, I feel like a fool and will be heading out tomorrow to see what I can find! Tim, if you ever read these comments, please know that I find your knowledge and enthusiasm for these objects to be a national treasure and sincerely hope your passion continues long into the future!

I have an old DIY book with instructions for a box you would open with a 4.5 volt lantern battery. It looked like a box with a bunch of nails hammered all the way in, two of which were connected to an electromagnetic coil inside. When you touch the contacts of the battery to the right pair of nails the coil pulls out the rod holding the box shut.

The satnav idea is pretty cool. You could easily do it with an small arduino and a gps chip. The lid could have a solar cell hidden behind some jewelry looking decorations so you wouldn't need to actually charge the box, just hold it in the sun.
@Steaphan98 жыл бұрын
+mrkiky That is what I was thinking. But to make it even more frustrating to those trying to open it, make the box big and made out of the same material as gun safes. That way if someone tries to break the box out of frustration, they can't.

Ive heard of these gps-based boxes, you can buy them for the sake of giving a special gift. When pressing a button on the lid, a screen will display the distance to the target, and the receiver then have to figure out where he is supposed to take the box for it to open. Thus you give the gift of an object and a journey all at once.
@Hobypyrocom11 жыл бұрын
