With camcorders it takes years or even never for manufacturers to refresh to newer models. Very different from the camera market in general. If the video camera serves my purpose, I try not to think in terms of missing out on the latest and greatest. My advice to anyone who used to play music or used shoot video or used to do something else is take that guitar, camera or exercise machine and sit it out right there in everyday plain sight. You'll pick it up and start fiddling with it. It tends to renew your interest and before long it becomes a routine and you'll advance from where you were before.

Been shooting with an FDR- AX33 since 2015. I know many of your suggestions, but have learned a few new ones in the process. I found a Mennon lens shade solved my gimbal/wide angel vignetting issues. The problem with a UV filter is the occasional lens halo reflection that would appear in the recorded footage. I gave up on it to prevent the issue. I do use Mennon's white balance capable cap for protection when not shooting. As a fellow YTer I made sure to give you a "like" and watched the entire video. Plus I made sure to comment. We can all use the points that YT attributes to these. I do a lot of run and gun so BOSS in vital for me. I wish theey could add it to a camera like the 700.
@DanChanPiano2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Chris. I can see how the big Mennon rectangular shade would be out far enough to not vignette and the white balance cap is a cool feature. You and I both wish the AX700 had BOSS. It would be the "perfect camcorder".
@chrislauterbach88562 жыл бұрын
@@DanChanPiano I've watched several YT videos on mounting the 700 on a gimbal. It is tedious and the combined rig is cumbersome. Love all its features ,but it is not a run and gun camcorder in my opinion.
@DanChanPiano2 жыл бұрын
@@chrislauterbach8856 By comparison to AX33 / AX53 the AX700 is a fairly large and at 2 lbs, hefty camcorder. I wouldn't consider it a good gimble candidate. Even if it had BOSS, I don't consider BOSS a gimble. BOSS shines by eliminating the micro jitters handholding static shots. It smooths and stabilizes small camera moves such as push ins and lateral trucking. Walking or running with BOSS does not give gimble like results. I have a Feyutech Scorp mini on order and I'm really hoping I can fly the AX53 on it. Kind of an unresearched impulse buy as the gimble is designed for small mirrorless, phones and action cameras. The length of a camcorder is never in the compatibility specs. If it mounts, I'll be a happy guy.

I own the FDR-AX53 and use it as a second and third cam for long run takes and live events. The DJI Wireless LAV system works as well as any shotgun mic, for about the same money. You get two mics, both that can record standalone with no receiver. If you edit in post, it's ideal IMO. Thanks for the info and time spent to share this info!
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Thanks for commenting a valuable tip. It reminded me to continue researching DJI wireless vs Rode Go II, which I have in my shopping list. So far DJI is winning. I'm also interested in the wireless headphone monitoring hack that I'm sure both systems can perform. This reverses the roles of mic and receiver. External shotgun mic into camera mic jack / camera headphone out cabled to camera mounted wireless mic / wireless mic transmits to operator worn receiver / headphones plugged into receiver. Now operator is wirelessly monitoring shotgun audio without being cabled to camera. From test others have done, looks like very acceptable latency.
@4amcreationshhi Жыл бұрын
@@DanChanPiano Interesting idea. The tiny Receiver unit that DJI provides has a headphone or audio out, With boom stands holding the two mics, you can remotely monitor both while filming. Highly recommend it. Each mic has 8GB of internal storage and can be used as a standalone recorder to add in post. I have several RODE Shotguns and almost went for the Go2, but after 5 DJI drones I figured I'd give it a shot. Glad I did. Keep up the good work!
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
@@4amcreationshhi Thanks! The two systems are in direct competition. GO2 also has internal recording and the receiver has two outs (usb-c and 3.5 jack). With either system, in a non-spontaneous situation where you can mic your subject or near proximity, I think I'd go internal recording with monitoring and use the camera mic for scratch, then synch in post. The reviews are giving physical size, range and battery brownie points to DJI over Rode. Good to hear your user experience. Oh yeah one more thing.. DJI is Chinese and Rode Australian, but that gets into ideals, loyalty and politics, not function and value. Of course I'd rather buy American but we need to compete.

Hello. May I ask you please what settings would you use to film a musical in theater. I just bought a second hand ax53 and I have to film a show in 2 days, and I dont have time to learn all details and I don't want to mess eveything, as I will have only one chance !!!!!!!!
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
@@sebwca Try to get to the theater as early as possible to set up and test under stage lighting. I'm thinking you will be on a tripod at a distance far enough from the stage to get a full scene wide shot. I'm not sure if you plan to do camera movements or zooms. If on tripod, you probably want to turn "steady shot " off. PA system is most likely and on board mic will give you acceptable but not great audio. I would set the camera in full auto. A long press of the manual button gives you manual ring assignments. I set mine to "focus" in case auto focus misses. In that case you short press the manual button and turn the lens ring to correct. Go back to auto focus if there's no auto focus problem. In "camera/mic" menu settings, "My Button" allows you three assignable quick access functions when you touch the lcd screen. I assign mine to "grid" , "steady shot", and "AE Shift". I turn grid on and off to get the camera level, especially if there's a horizon in the shot that would give away an unlevel camera. Quick access to "steady shot" is good so you can turn it off when mounting to a tripod. I turn my zebras on 100% so I can see if my highlights are going to blow out. By having "AE shift" assigned, (it'll show up on LCD screen as "EV" ) I can quickly override auto exposure and reduce or increase as needed. Hope that helps and good luck.

Hi, Great video. I have set the stabilisation to Active for 4K@25fps on my AX53. However, as soon as I remove the battery, it goes back to Standard. Is this normal behaviour? I would prefer it stayed as Active since I only shoot in 4K.
@DanChanPiano9 ай бұрын
My camera retains all user settings after battery changes. I shoot the AX53 in 4k@30fps. For a test and reference, give that setting a go and see if you get the return to default. This would be telling. At least you would know it's a condition of your res/fps setting. If you're stuck with having to change back each time , you could look at it on the positive side. A quick check of all settings before shooting prevents errors. BTW I enjoyed your channel.

Here's to hoping the setting sticks with a longer battery removal. Not quite sure what's caused this. I may have as you suggest unknowingly had some other setting changed or Mode, that prevented retention of the Active Stabilisation. Once again, thanks for your video.@@DanChanPiano

Thanks for sharing these great ideas! I've been a home movie geek since the '70s and, like you, prefer looking through an eyepiece for many shots. I'm buying the ax53 just to regain this feature 🎥 Using the eyepiece helps frame shots in the way viewers expect to enjoy content. It just makes the video more watchable. This conventional framing gets lost with the too-wide, spray-and-pray tendency of LCD-screen framing (and limited, jerky zoom) of SLR cameras.

Great video & Thanks for sharing….I own a Sony AX53 myself and shoot Dragraces in 1080p@60fps….I want to shoot Dragraces in 4k@60fps but the AX53 can only do 30fps in 4k….So my question is “ How on earth did you manage to get your AX53 to shoot those action shots so smoothly & look more like 60fps than 30fps ? I really wanna shoot the NHRA FINALS in Pomona in 4k this November 2023 but I want it to look like 60fps as you accomplished in your fast shots of the racecar & motorcycle jumps. Thank you for your expertise 🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Thanks Frank. As you stated, the AX53's top 4K frame rate is 30fps. Not all footage in this video was shot with the AX53. I made sure to label the clips that were at the video's start to demo the camera's resolution, and I used AX53 shots for many of the clips but not all. The race cars is found video. I shot the slo mo motorcycle footage in 1080 @120fps on my AX700. When talking to subjects non specific to the AX53, like the use of viewfinders I never claimed what you were seeing was AX53 footage. So, I guess it was a bit misleading to those who thought everything was AX53. I see movie footage shot at 24fps where the camera is whipping around and subjects are moving quickly and the motion blur is minimal. That is a mystery to me. They say that the eyes and brain are used to seeing blur as you turn your head and then when you stop, the scene comes into focus. I started paying attention to pans in movies and television and yes, there is motion blur during the pan then sharp focus when the pan ends. So I guess it's true, just never analyzed until you pay it some attention. My Panasonic X2000 shoots 4K@60 and I can pan and shoot action much more to my liking than 30fps where I'm making a conscious effort to pan very slowly.

This video was shot with a variety of cameras, but I did shoot the opening titled clips with the AX53. I presume you are liking those better than your full frame camera. Much more light gathering resulting in less noise in a full frame sensor compared to the tiny 1/2.5" sensor in the AX 53. It could be that there's more going on than sensor size alone. But if the end result is you liking what you see, who cares about the technical stuff.

I have a Sony Ax-33 and was very happy with it, but with the hype of moving into a mirrorless camera I bought a Sony ZV E-10, but the problem is with zooming. I have a Tamron 18-300 mm lens, which is very good but can't have a smooth cinematic zoom in and out, like you can get on the handycam. Even after correcting the shake with the catalyst browse, the jerk of zooming in and out is visible. To use a gimbal for this I will have to buy a high capacity one and even that will not solve the problem, because I will have to balance for every zoom position, unless the lens is with internal zoom. I overcame all this by mounting AX-33 and ZV E-10 on a rig. ZV E-10 was on a small gimbal with Sigma 16mm F1.4 and the AX-33 parallel to it on a separate fixture on the same rig. The bottom of the rig was supported in a pocket which in turn was hung from my neck and shoulders and the weight could be comfortably carried by a small build person like me in my seventies . I have a surround microphone with an additional voice input which is delivered from my wireless microphone. The output from the surround microphone is connected to both the cameras through a splitter. The ZV E-10 provides sharp and high quality images with bokeh by using your steps to move in and out. The distant images images are cinematically zoomed in and out on AX-33. I normally leave both the cameras on but one can save the battery and memory on SD card by switching of the unnecessary camera. The footages can be easily synched using the common audio on any editing software. The footages could be chopped and joined to ones liking. I found the results were really excellent.
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
You seem to have found an all in one solution. That sounds like quite the rig. I've seen KZbin videos where people are doing side by side comparisons of cameras with such a rig but never anyone in public with a two camera setup. You must turn some heads. With both cameras running and getting two focal length perspectives it would almost be like getting the footage of two cameramen.

Try to get to the theater as early as possible to set up and run some tests under stage lighting. I'm assuming you'll be on a tripod far enough back to get a full wide shot, so turn steady shot off. I don't know if you are planning a wide shot for the whole show or planning to do camera movements and zooming. I'm assuming they'll have a PA system so the onboard mic should do a sufficient but not great job. I'd leave the camera set to full auto. If you long press the manual button you can assign the front ring to various functions. I set mine to “focus”, In case I need to correct autofocus errors quickly. While filming, short press the manual button to get into that function. Set up “my buttons” to quickly access three commonly used functions of your choice by touching the LCD screen. , To get there- Menu / camera-mic / my buttons. I set mine to grid, steadyshot on or off and AE shift. Grid helps me level the camera when a horizon is in the shot where an unlevel camera is obvious. Steady shot on and off for a quick "off" setup if you're putting the camera on a tripod. I turn my zebras on 100% to see if highlights are blown out. If they are, I hit AE shift, (“EV” on screen) to correct auto exposure. Hope this helps and good luck.

Glad you liked the video and thanks. Sorry, no recommendations. I searched, as I'm sure you did, and the all-in-one flower style lens hood that reverses with the little ball bearings with included cap could not be found from other manufacturers. You're most likely going to have to buy the hood and cap separately and hope that it reverses easily.

Great video! I use this camera to record horse racing but my videos always look fuzzy and soft. The horses always lack detail. In your video, you recorded motor cross…… any sides what setting you used? I always record in 1080p 60p and adjust my shutter speed 500-1500 depending on how bright it is outside. Everything else is in automatic. Do you have any suggestions?
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
In looking at your videos I think they look sharp and well recorded. I don't know if you used the AX53 for these, but I see no problem with detail at the settings you are using. In my video, when showing video of the motocross jumping, the video was shot on my Sony AX700. Since I was talking about the use of viewfinders and not the AX53, I felt it was ok to use footage shot with another camera.

@@DanChanPiano I know they could look sharper or I guess more focused because I have seen it done with this camera. I just can’t seem to find the correct settings with it. Would you recommend the nd filters for it? And yes, I use the ax53 for them.
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
You may be aware of the 180 degree rule to give realistic motion blur to moving subjects. A shutter speed that's very much faster than the video's frame rate setting produces a strobe effect such as intentionally used in the movie "Saving Private Ryan". The rule is the shutter speed should be twice the frame rate to get proper motion blur. So video shot in 30p should get a shutter speed of 60fps and 60p video should get a shutter speed of 120fps. Since the AX53 is limited to only one manual setting at a time with the other exposure values fully automatic, in bright sun one can use an ND filter to get the correct frame rate/shutter speed ratio. This is the primary reason to use an ND filter on the AX53. Whether or not it will make a difference in the sharpness you seek remains for you to test. @@capoeirask8

Hi Dan love this video and is the reason I got the ax53. Just had a question - when I installed the ecm b1m mic, every time I start the camera it says this accessory is not supported or something like that , is that correct ? Is it actually connected or not just wondering. Thanks Dan !
@DanChanPianoАй бұрын
Thank you. I don't get this warning when connecting my b1m to my Sony camcorders. Plug headphones or earbuds into the Ax53 and attach the b1m. Switch the mic to analog as the AX53 does not support digital mode. Tap or rub the b1m to confirm it is the audio source. Watch the camera's VU meter as you're doing this as well. The cameras internal mic is inactive with b1m attached and will not produce sound when rubbed. Detach the b1m and the internal mic reactivates as the audio source. This is how you can tell which mic is active.

Great info,, question: besides the viewfinder and display are there any other cons on the ax43 vs the ax53 you know of? Also what’s your opinion on the ax700 image stabilization, and 4K30p vs the 60p of the panhcx2000,, Thank you!
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Thanks! When zoomed in, the AX53's contrast based auto-focus sometimes misses the subject if the background is brighter than the subject. I have my manual button set to focus function so I can quickly correct. AX700's stabilization is ok but not on par with the AX53's BOSS. AX700's image is better. Panasonic x2000's 60p is good at smoothing out faster pans and subject movement, but for filming when those situations are not happening, I use 30p for better low light and to match my other cameras in a 30fps timeline.

When Sony proprietary mics are plugged into the camera's multi interface shoe, the internal camera mic is disabled. Great video, thank you! I have had this camera since Oct 2019 and I use it primarily for our church. My husband is a pastor and he offers classes that we record for our online academy and we are using it for one of our church services. I use a Manfrotto tripod but would really like to have something with more flexibility to pan easier and was looking at the Magnus VT-3000 with the remote control. Do you have any suggestions for that? If my husband steps out from behind the pulpit and I have to use the wide angle button at the top sometimes it's jerky or I shake the camera. Thank you again, I will be ordering the lens covers as suggested in your video.
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Sounds like the Manfrotto doesn't have a fluid head for smooth pans and that you are looking for a tripod with a fluid head. The Magnus seems decent enough if you are replacing the Manfrotto and I read a little about the zoom controller. It connects to cameras via LANC which the AX53 does not have. However Magnus says it comes with an adapter to connect to consumer cameras. The AX53 has a multi port jack that might facilitate that adapter but I can't know for sure. You might make sure before purchasing. An alternative might be to keep your setup and get a wireless Sony RMT 835 remote commander for about $20. I have a couple of them that came with my other Sony cameras. Works with the AX53's IR window at the front of the camera. I use it for jitter free start/stop and zooming without touching the camera. You do have to reach around and point the remote at the camera's front, but I can zoom while recording without getting it the frame.

I have owned camcorders in the past and they all had an internal CR2032 battery required to maintain power and store your settings eg date & time etc, when the main battery was removed. Occasionally the CR2032 battery needed replacing and could be easily accessed behind a small cover and replaced with a new one. However, with the Sony AX53, things are different. You have no access to the small built-in internal battery! The internal battery on my AX53 seems to have come to the end of its life and so settings are no longer retained when you remove the external battery. Anyone else have this problem on the AX53 and found a solution?

@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Ritch, I would say the AX53 would not be a great choice for on-camera presentation under lighting. Although studio lighting seems bright, it's a mere candle to the power of the sun, under which the small sensor of the AX53 shines. The AX53's manual exposure is limited to either iris, shutter speed or gain, one at a time making exposing difficult. BOSS, one of the strong points of the camera, isn't in use on a tripod. I'm using Sony AX700 for my studio work. You want a 1" sensor to handle the lower light and full manual exposure control. Look for a camera with those attributes.

AX53 might be able to handle it, but if you're already familiar with the camera, you know it's limitations and the question might be, are you able to handle using the AX53's for your intended shots without frustration? I'd take it out in the field and do some testing of some of the scenarios you might encounter in the documentary stuff. AX53 is only a consumer camera after all.

@DanChanPiano5 ай бұрын
When looking at the lens, does it float as demonstrated at 2:00 in the video? If not, there is a problem. If it does, then BOSS is engaged and you're getting the best stabilization the camera offers. You must still make a conscious effort to hold the camera as steady as possible. It will not fully compensate for gross shaking or jerky movements. If you were to record, holding the AX53 and any other non-BOSS, but OIS camera, mounted together side by side, I think the comparison would definitely favor BOSS. Regarding video while kayaking, have a look at my video, "Calm Water Kayaking", kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpCZop-tfN-hppY Here I demonstrate my use of GoPros along with the AX53. GoPros have their place for wide angle shots, but you must have the ability to zoom with a video camera to get the varied types of shots I need while on the water.

Hello thanks for this great information. My question is will the VILTORX® DC-70 II 7 Inch HD Support 4K Signal HDMI Input Output Camera Video Field Monitor for DSLR Camera Camcorder with Rechargeable F550 Battery. fit to the top of the camera
@DanChanPiano2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad the video was was informative for you. Judging from looking at a photo of the Viltrorx monitor, I would say yes it would fit the camera. The hot shoe on the Ax53 is recessed a bit to allow for the cover door to close flush to the body, which is confining to bigger hot shoed accessories to fit in. When open, the door lays horizontally to be out of the way, but some people, who always have something in the shoe, remove the door for esthetics. I do think any of these camera obstructions would clear the high standing shoe mount of this monitor. One ting to know is that the AX53 is mini HDMI out and would have to adapter cable (included) up to full size HDMI if the monitor requires it. Also, the flip out LCD screen partially covers the HDMI jack and the LCD needs to be flipped open for a cable to be plugged in.

@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
Glide cam for sure because any size/shape camera can be mounted atop the platform unobstructed. Gimbals are designed for the shallow depth of a mirrorless or DSLR. Camcorders are long. The roll motor arm would have to clear the viewfinder of a camcorder to give full articulation. It can be done with the right camcorder/gimbal combination.

I am happy with this camera, but coming from the XR500VE, I didn't appreciate the tiny LCD display, or the placement of the HDMI port blocking the display from being closed. Seems like they deliberately made things awkward. Thankfully, it takes great video and pictures.
@DanChanPiano11 ай бұрын
"Seems like they deliberately made things awkward." Who knows what evil lurks in the minds of camera manufacturers? Planned obsolescence, missing features that just happen to be included on the next model up with upgrades that we just can't live without. $$$$$$ Marketing and engineering work hand in hand for companies to keep selling and make profit. It's the way of business. It's the way of the world. We as consumers need to keep on being consumers and there's no use fretting about it. At least that's what I try to tell myself when I get a case of buyer's regret. I've found that with most consumer products, I need to resist the temptation to immediately upgrade. If you wait for a few versions to come out, you'll usually see the features you want and maybe even a price break. At some point, you have to bite but just know there will always be something bigger and better on the horizon.

I just ordered the AX-53 and I currently have the PJ790V also.. lol I only use camcorders for its nightshot ability. I was wondering do you feel both are comparable when it comes to nightvision 4k vs 1080p? I feel camcorders do have a learning curb especially with the settings ISO vs gain…… I had to learn it to get the most out of nightvision. Also do you feel there’s a difference in the f2.0 vs f1.8?
@DanChanPiano2 жыл бұрын
I haven't used the nightshot feature on the AX53 and only used nightshot on the PJ790 a few times., so I can't answer that question. Sensor sizes of the two at 1/2.5 and 1/2.8 are very close, as are the f2.0 and f1.8 lens speeds so I see little difference. I shoot the pj790 at 1080 60p which the ax53 is also capable of but only 30p in 4k. I noticed some of your videos are in 4k so you already know the res improvements you'll be getting with the ax53 in 4k, but I find I need to pay attention to fast camera and subject movement with the slower 4k frame rate. You'll enjoy the added features and controls of the ax53. Focus peaking, exposure aids like zebras and the camera is a little lighter than the 790. You'll like the much greater zoom range. My main frustration with the 53 is with zoomed in auto focusing in less that optimal light. I have manual focus assigned to the manual button so I can quickly correct when auto focus fails.

@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
You'll have to do your own research, but I found a Raynox lens that might work. Raynox HDP-2800ES High Definition 0.28x Diagonal Fisheye Conversion Lens. The thread mounts of the AX53 are 55mm and this lens has 43mm threads. When looking for attachment lenses, you'll take those two factors into consideration to see what type of step up or step down ring would be required if the lens does not match the 55mm threads of the AX53. I found it on Amazon, but can be bought elsewhere. Raynox might have other choices, but I cannot say for sure if you'll find compatibility.

It would work but due to it's small sensor it might not be the best for indoors, even bright stage lighting. Auto focus has more problems in low light too. It performs best outdoors where the sun is 20 times brighter than indoors. If you aren't too critical about noise in the picture from the gain being pumped up and on a budget it would work. I think you'd be happier spending more and getting a camera with 1" sensor and an external microphone that would better handle the low light and have a better reach for the audio (depends on PA system of no PA system). Sony AX700 perhaps.

So the AX53 Is better than the AX43? With kind regards Daniel
@DanChanPiano Жыл бұрын
For me the AX53 is better because it has the articulating electronic viewfinder. On the later model AX43, Sony eliminated the viewfinder altogether. AX43 also has fewer buttons, meaning you would have to get to those functions through the menu. Other than that, I think the cameras are the same. Ax43 is a little cheaper because of the reduced features. The main disappointment when the AX 43 came out was that the camera didn't change enough from the AX53. We were hoping for 4K@60, but didn't happen. Also we wanted more manual controls. Didn't happen. Depending on your needs, the newer AX43 might be fine for you but, those are the differences.
