This was an awesome experiment! Carrots seem to be the one crop that everyone does differently and you actually took the time to test all these different methods! Great work:) I used a double layer of row fabric to cover the soil over my carrot bed this spring and got very fast, consistent germination (within a week). I'm trying it again right now to see if I'll be as lucky mid-summer.

It makes a lot of sense to me that germination would have been slowed under a board or cardboard in the spring. They're great methods for keeping your seeds from drying out when planting in summer for a fall harvest, but in the spring they're contraindicated because the soil is still thawing, and covering it up will slow the thawing process. Thanks for making this video! It was a lot of fun seeing the results of your experiment.

Excellent information. Carrots can be very difficult just to get to germinate. I have experimented myself over the years. One thing will share that seems to really make a difference is soaking your seeds in luke warm water for an hour or two before sewing them. I have also found that if you drain them, spread out on a paper towel and then cover with another paper towel it makes them easier to sew and seperates the seeds out. I have found this method improves germination by at least 60%. The other thing i have learned is there are a million different brands of seed out there but quality makes a difference with carrots the higher quality seeds are more consistent. Most other garden seeds ive not noticed that much difference but it does with carrots. Feel free to share this information with your viewers.

Very interesting results! I never could understand why the "mixing with sand" method would work. But your carrots are beautiful!
@GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna Жыл бұрын
I suspect the idea came from the fact that many other types of small seeds are mixed with sand to make broadcast sowing easier (wild flowers are the main example I can think of).

Wonderfully informative trial. I live in semi-desert where it's common to see dry hot weather with temperatures more than 40C (105F). In mid July, I thoroughly soak my soil before planting carrots, make a shallow furrow, cover the seeds with thin vermiculite, run a sprayer over the furrows then cover with plywood. When the seeds germinate, I remove the plywood then use a timer to spray them for about one minute three times a day: 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00. They also get watered thoroughly for about 15 minutes every second day at 05:00, along with the other veggies in my raised beds. Tender carrot seedlings are difficult to mulch effectively so I will apply mulch lightly between rows and increase the mulch as they mature and after thinning. I too find thinning carrots is tedious, no matter how careful I am with sowing the seeds. I'd love to see you continue these tests and maybe you will find a more efficient way to minimize the amount of thinning required. Love your channel and love your trials. Always credible, creative and informative. Thank you.

I'll stop whining about having to water them every other day now 😆! Definitely much trickier to get them to germinate in your climate.- using a timer is a smart choice!

@@GrowfullywithJenna I have three sizes of the Ladbrooke blockers. I’ve used the mini 20 (3/4”) and the 5 (1.5”) the most in the past few years. Now, there are the swift blockers. 😭 Won’t be able to justify those for a while!! 😅 I have had great success with them. This past winter I invested in the Epic pots and trays. The root systems I got from them were top notch! It’s been so much fun getting back into seed starting and trying out different methods.

Excellent video Jenna. I have used the board method for years along with thinning, its worked well for me. I also soak my seed for about 4 hours. Sow and then sift about 1/8 inch of very fine soil covering the seed, water, and then placing a 1x6 centered over each row.The key for carrots is having the perfect soil/compaction and the bed/soil as level as humanly possible. I generally grow my carrotts in 24" x "48" raised beds that are 12" high. The smaller bed makes it easier for me to sow and thin.

Wanted to add that I believe a lot of gardeners mistakenly believe their having germination issues when they are floating their seeds to the edge of their beds when they water early on. I only see germination issues in the heat of mid summer

Just saw your video about spacing carrots. I'm terrible at thinning my carrots, and they always grow weird because they are too close together. Last year, I 3d printed tall soil block makers. I planted my carrots inside in soil blocks, and about two weeks after they sprouted, I transplanted them to the garden with the appropriate spacing. Making the soil blocks was time-saving since my carrots didn't need to be thinned. I didn't experience any transplant shock with them.

That was a great experiment. I am thinking about thinning my carrots now. They are way too think but UGH I really don't want to. I would love to see this experiment for summer-fall planting. Thanks for all your great videos.

I've been looking forward to these results! I definitely thought the sand or slurry one were going to he the best! 😮 I'd love to see you do this again in the fall, & maybe even again next spring, using a smaller ration of seeds to sand, thinner toilet paper, etc.

While the results did not show you a clear winner like you had hoped, they were interesting. Yes, please run this test on your fall carrots. I usually just use cardboard and am curious whether I should switch it up next year.

Love this carrot germ test! I have had issues with carrot germination and I would be very interested in seeing this play out again for the summer planting for fall carrots!! I'm about to try to sow some soon here in my 6b garden in Southwest Idaho and it is so hot now🥲

Out of all the methods you tested, you didn't try the one that we have found to work best for us in terms of both getting good germination rates, and getting the seeds spaced properly to avoid excessive thinning later. Use pelletized seeds. Ever since we discovered pelletized seeds for carrots, it has been a total game changer. The pellets are bright white, making them easier to see on the soil, they are larger and easier to more accurately place with the preferred spacing as you sow. I highly recommend trying pelletized seeds if you reproduce this test. We cover ours with a board, or burlap, as in your test, and both methods have worked great. Thanks for all the great content!

Great timing as always. I was just thinking about sowing more carrots this coming week. I have an area in the garden bed I can prep, but I also saw a video on planting carrots in a container so will be giving that a try also. In the bed will use the board method and a dome for the container, which I'll keep in a semi-shady area until they sprout. Thanks for posting the results and enjoy your summer!

Cool experiment. Do your kids enjoy the gardening, I have introduced our 3 and 4 year old grandsons to sowing seeds and transplanting. Good potato harvest, green beans turned out well, I will have to check out a few ears next week, but think the first of sweet corn might be ready, so dry here in SW mo the grasshoppers are starting to damage some of the crop. zone 6b

Definitely would like to see this again for the fall. My carrots are a bit behind in their growth. But I also planted later than you, per my growing zone. I also tried growing in a grow bag because I have not had very good luck growing in ground. I would like to try another round in a grow bag for the fall.

I would like to see the germination results of doing a similar trial in July or early August. I have a toolway seeder, it spaces carrot seeds well. Large bed, black poly Tarp cover definitely helped my germination rates, a lot. Hopefully next year, I'll have a back yard garden to play with, as well. Hand sowing will be necessary. Then. I'll follow your trial results. Thanks

I enjoyed seeing your experiment outcomes. Thinning, for me is always a job I don't like. Jeff, from the Ripe Tomato Farm channel just snips the unwanted carrot tops as they germinate and lets the stronger ones continue growing. I might try that method next season. Have you ever seen his videos? He is in north western Canada. You have great content as does he. For viewers like me it is the best of both worlds! You are both pros! Take care Jenna!

Thank you, Jenna for your hard work and effort of growing carrots different ways in hopes of not having to thin them and for sharing the results with us. I grew carrots in grow bags this year. I just scattered the seeds on the surface of the potting mix and covered them. They germinated well, but trying to thin them was a huge pain in the you know where. I ended up not thinning them and just let them alone. I've noticed from my lack of thinning that most of the carrots did not grow large or long. The variety, New Kuroda, doesn't grow very long, but they never got a decent size in 90 days. I live in zone 8b, and it's really been hot here. Planting a fall crop wouldn't do well since the weather won't cool down until early Nov. and my backyard won't get a lot of sun then. Next year, I am going to make seed tape and use thin toilet paper like you mentioned. I am hoping using seed tape will help with easier and better spacing of the carrots. I might grow them in my GreenStalk vertical planter instead of a grow bag. Your garden always look so healthy and well kept. You are an awesome gardener, and I like your gardening tips and tricks.

It has been so hot and dry, I am surprised anything is growing, lol. All of my seed tape failed miserably, just too hot, even with shade cloth. Pre germinating some more carrots, hopefully they can hold on. My early planted carrots are doing fine, the ones (main crop) I planted a couple weeks ago, kaput!!! Enjoy your videos, back to the drawing board. Stay Well!!!
