I lived in Trieste literally all my life, I just moved out last year. I'm SO GLAD you made a video there! I agree with whatever you said. Trieste is gorgeous and definitely worth going there. The whole city center is walkable and it's a pleasure to wander around it. The urban bus net is also excellent and will take you literally everywhere and there is a direct train taking you to the next airport. It's only 1 our and a half by train from Venice so I always thought that if you crossed the ocean to get to Venice, it's really a small detour or a day trip. There also are a lot of museums. I'm SO glad you featured Trieste!

What do you mean "reclaimed"? Before WWI, Trieste was never under Italian control. It was in the Hapsburg empire since the 1300s.True, a lot of Italian-speaking people lived in Trieste, but that's a different thing.

Hey, that's my hometown! (Even though now I moved to Finland.) When did you film it? Minute 1:42 that's not a church, but a bank: it represents the change of structure that took place in the city during the age of Enlightenment. The centre of the city was moved from San Giusto Cathedral (old town, religious power) to piazza Unità and piazza della Borsa (borsa stands for Stock market, hence economical power), named after that building. Hi, I always wondered the origin of these comments, and since this time we are making a comparison within Italy, I think I can purge myself of any bias I could have. I am Italian, from Rome. I have no beef with Trieste, I think it's really cute, a shame it is not well known. However, I have visited much of Italy, and actually, I have made myself a list of Italian cities. Trieste, although cute, falls fairly low on my list, 25th (anything below 13 on my list of Italian cities is shaky, and I am still judging, as I need to familiarise myself better with some cities and I am still missing some possible contenders, so really it is better to say Trieste falls around the 20th place). Meaning it has beauty, however can't compete with the top players (often smaller than Trieste). and I understand it is normative. However, how much of Italy have you seen, and what is the origin of your comment saying you find it one of the most beautiful cities in Italy? By which I mean, how many Italian cities and towns have you spent enough time wondering around to get an idea of their beauty? 10? 15? 20? I hope I don't come off as aggressive. However I often hear this from my friends and people in general. Claiming one or another European cities to be some of the most beautiful, yet I have never been able to make such judgments. It takes me multiple visits and hours thinking about it...

B) I did my bacc in Italian lit in the 90s including a semester at l’universitá di Urbino and about a year living in Italy. Had to learn italian before beginning the degree, liked my course on Dante v Petrarca best, did a thesis on Rome vista da D’annunzio, CE Gadda e Pasolini, etc. C) I’ve hitchhiked most of the country, haven’t counted the cities and towns because that’s a fool’s errand. D) My favourite of all is likely Chieti (Pescara) but maybe it really is Rome. Rome really is on another level. E) La coscienza di Zeno is one of the more underrated books of the 20th century imho.

We - not only in Brescia but in other as cities as well - used to call them "Bauscia" (literally "saliva") because of their arrogant and snobbish behaviors. We make fun of them believing outside of the city there's only desert for miles, until you reach their holiday places such as Courmayeur, Cortina d'Ampezzo or Cervinia.

If you're in Trieste don't miss Miramare Castle and also a bit further out Duino castles, Rilke trail and the Grotta Gigante, those are must see places!Delfino Verde is a cool boat ride to see the whole of the coast 🙌🙌🙌 Oh and have pasta alla busara 😉😉

Don't miss Piran, just a little down the coast in Slovenia. Beautiful little town on a peninsula. Various layers of medievil walls protecting it. Maze of narrow passages. Surrounded by perfect clear water. Great swimming in summer.

*Pirano.... the city belonged to Venetians and Italian people for thousands years before they were forced to leave by Slovenians anfer WWII. There was no slovenian-speaker in the city until the 50s and Italian architecture is everywhere

@@seanhurley4003 Trieste is the biggest city of Istria, the metropolitan area has more people than the rest of the peninsula. So, you will see a huge concentration of very nice buildings, with elements of the Austrian architecture (mostly in the square and sea walk) and the rest of the city that resambles any other city of Northern Italy. But the mix of the styles is amaxing. Pirano too is beautiful, but is 100% Venetian in its architecture with zero influence from Austria

@@83marktwain we know that in Slovenia people and politcs fake history, but just for Intellectual honesty: the city was founded by Romans, Venetians arrived later and population continued to be Romance-Latin all over history for 2000 years. Architecture is Italian. In 1911 Istria falled for a little period under Austrian rule and the Austrian Crown organised this census where resulted that no inhabitant was Slovene speaker, population was 100% Italian. After WWII the region, Italian in everythin from building to people language and culture, was given to Slovenia and Croazia that forced the autoctonus to exodus with the use of force....

Trieste can be a little windy depending upon the season. I visited the Castle by the sea (a huge stately home that a man built for his wife) It is huge and gorgeous inside..with part of the grounds made into a park

Found a beautiful Miami-like town called Latina like 45 mins away from Rome... Gorgeous and it’s got a medieval fairy tale like town called Sermoneta and fairy garden. It was a sigh to behold! People didn’t really speak English though but totally recommend (and there were barely and taxis or ubers so prepare) but Google it and you’ll see 😻

Latina! Lovely place. As I understand, it largely didn’t exist prior to the Fascist regime because the area was historically swamps which were reclaimed in an effort to settle farmers into the area. So Littoria was a planned city to be the center of the region. It got its new name after the war, to downplay the whole fascist connection. I was in the center of town and found a public artwork made of a large number of steel rods fastened together into a whole. The act of ‘fastening’ the country together was the rationale the fascists gave themselves for their mission. And there it was, in 2021, still prominently displayed on the town square. It was, in a word, strange.

As any other place in the world, there are a lot of things that can be said about Trieste, but amongst those I consider most important I must stress multiculturality, as you already mentioned (we have places of worship of many religions - including what was until not long ago the largest synagogue in Europe) and one of the highest concentration of education and research institutions in the world. There also is the largest open to public cave in the world, the "Grotta Gigante" (giant cave), 3 castles (S. Giusto and Miramare that you mentioned but also Duino's castle is nearby), and once a year the largest regatta in the world for open sailboats (2000 boats, old, new, cruise, race, traditional or technological, from 5 to 30 meters all race together, the starting line is 2km long). The city is so complex because it had been under control of different countries, my mother always laughs saying that her father was born Austrian, her older brother Italian and she American (yes after WW2 the city and its surroundings were governed for a long time by an allied government). Whoever's going to get here, feel free to ask for suggestions :)

Not very easy to recommend a top 3 without knowing personal tastes (for example views or visits?) and what will be your mobility; I think that a good start is Miramare's castle, a walk in the city centre (Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia and surroundings and possibly up S. Giusto's hill to the castle and cathedral) and Grotta Gigante (a little bit out of the city).

We don't really ever talk about restaurants as they change so much. But the beans and cabbage soup is a must as well as the breads that are made with fruits or nuts

@@woltersworld Right in the town centre next to the place where he's filming on the boardwalk there's a cafe called Caffé degli specchi. It's a traditional Triestino coffee shop with all of Italian coffee culture encapsulated in one place.

Cool! I am from Sweden but have been around the Croatian coast, Slovenija and Trst quite a few times. Above all I love the Italian style cafés and generally their restaurants with Italian food. What I have passed many times is Prosecco which is right "on the top of" Trst. Guess it is worth a visit but haven't really heard much about it so I don't know.

Why insult Trieste by making it into a byway to Slovenia (an insignificant country of only 2 million). Trieste is one of the nicest cities in Italy. It's not just a tourist spot - it actually has a purpose. It is a living city, though like all of Europe, Italy's fertility rate is so low that it, and its cities, are slowly dying. Meals in the touristy areas of Trieste is pretty bad. Light meals are generally good. The coffee is always good. People are generally helpful - though English is not a big language. Miramare is a must. Visit Trieste, but do it gently. It is well worth it.

To be honest. I expected more. City looks like pension club. Ive never seen so many old ppl and like few young ones. I saw like 5 kids in city of 200.000 ppl. Literally. 5 of them, I counted. Tho Seafront is freaking amazing and worth going there. But rest of the city is tipical Austrian arhitecture. Building are very dirty from smog. Tho rest of the city is clean. A lot of stuff are closed. The city is failing bad since the fall of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavs used to go here to shop western clothes and stuff). Tho it is still cheap. Like really cheap compare to other parts of Italy. Prices are kinda same as in Slovenia, Ljubljana. Tho 1kg of cherry was 8 eur almost gave me heartattack cosidering as a peasant Bosnia I can get them for free back in motherland. Sadly city is really dying. City would be much better if it was part of Yugoslavia-Slovenia. I think. What else. The streetsss. To many cars!!! Outside of 2 main squares and few parks u cant walk around. Barely. Or u gonna get crashed by car. Also to many coffe shops. More then ppl I swear. Tho coffe and cakes and croasants they sell are amazing.

The port in Trieste is hurting as the Slovenian and Croatian port cities took away a lot of Trieste port traffic by charging lower rates and more container ready facilities. More modern for sure.
