I was so pleased that Pyrion brought up at 28:00 how I feel about haggling in middle- or low-income countries. The guidebook will say "don't let the taxi drive take advantage of you!" or something, and what it's talking about is them 'scamming' you into paying two bucks for a ride that you'd pay twenty bucks for back home, and NO! no, you must *argue* with this dude to get him to take you there for fifty cents! Ahh, fuck off, just, like. If you're a student travelling on five dollars a day or w/e, sure, I guess - if anyone even does that anymore. A friend of mine is an Anthropologist and she studied haggling in South East Asia, not as a South East Asian cultural practice bit as a touristic cultural practice. It turns out, the idea of haggling is the result of a deeply ingrained racist idea that 'foreign' people have less elaborate currency systems, when pretty much everywhere in the world today has a currency with a determined value and goods have a determined value. So no haggling in 99% of places tourisrs haggle.

Yeah, I mean, there's a small segment of people for whom it's just a job, who willingly choose to do it and have actual control over what they agree to. I do think it's important to acknowledge that, so I didn't have an issue with how it was introduced. But it's obviously very important to recognize the seedy side, and to understand that it's more abusive than not. I get that Lewis was just rambling and thinking out loud, and it's entirely likely that he'd realize that equality *wouldn't* lead to more old people dating young people if he gave it more thought. But yeah, the lack of awareness they all had about the hypothetical guy with the old woman was staggering. I would really love to hear them get hit with the realization that it would be the same the other way around.
