So many people use "filler" to describe when plot isn't happening in a Shounen. But the thing is, Trigun isn't structured like a typical Shounen until the second half. Trigun, in my opinion is a scifi "Slice of Life" anime with wild west elements, and hard-hitting philosophical themes. We're drawn in by the mystery of the 60 Billion Double Dollar Man, and then we meet him, and immediately have questions. All of the "filler" answers those questions: Who is Vash? What are his values? Why does he have a bounty depite those values? How does he react when his values are under question, or he's challenged? How does he juggle his needs and the unearned vitriol thrown at him by everyone around him? How does he still have a driving force through all this? How far is he willing to be pushed to prove his ideologies to the world? And that's why it doesn't feel like filler. Every scene had a purpose and didn't outstay its welcome.

To me the show didn't have any real filler to me, because to me, it's telling not only Vash's development, but Develops the characters of his allies, which are important for connecting with the plot. It's vital to feeling the plot to the fullest, and if you skip it, you pretty much are left with only seeing Vash and all the trauma. It's pointless and you don't gain anything from it.
@beamertoy2 жыл бұрын
Exactly little bits of Vash's character is explained in almost every episode. A filler would be something more like how Team Kakashi are running around the leaf village plotting ways to get Kakashi to remove his mask. It doesn't progress the story or the characters.

This is exactly why the Trigun Stampede remake just…isn’t hitting correct for me. Idk if it’s closer to the manga than ‘98 or not, but I’m stuck wondering “where’s /goofy/ Vash?! When’s Vash gonna get to be a badass too??” basically every episode (and they’re released 5 now…) *I didn’t really realize Trigun was a manga first until I saw it at a Secret Santa given to someone else several years ago. Tried reading the scans but either couldn’t invest at the time or the site crashed or I got busy; so actually taking the time to read the manga scans has admittedly bumped up a bit on my “to consume” list with the release of Stampede, feeling underwhelmed with Stampede, and rewatching ‘98 for prolly the 7th time

I just watched this video because I have been on a rewatch of '98 after watching Stampede and man. The filler is what makes it. I missed it! Stampede is fine but it's SO breakneck that you never get to really connect with the characters-- they're always in a life or death situation all the time. The OG anime connects with the heart of the characters and lets you build up a natural curiosity as to who Vash is and why he's so strong in his convictions.

I feel like it's part of this "Movies as TV" phenomenon that Anime has often had with one-cour wonders. They often try to make up for this by making the characters have strong personalities during plot time and smaller moments within the action going on, something Stampede does.

If you only save one kid it’s hard to say you’re a child saver. So when Vash says he’s a soldier for love and peace you really gotta wonder what he does for love and peace. Not to mention Knives and his relation to Vash. Though I do like that they focus on his actual "nature" in the reboot and reveal it a bit later in the series, unlike the 98 anime which only hinted at it and mentioned it in passing on the very last episode. And I guess there's not really a lot to reveal regarding Vash in Stampede yet since they shifted the timeline and he hasn't really achieve legendary status yet. He's basically a nobody that's been mistaken for Knives. In the 98 anime, we only see glimpses of the real Vash per episode, to the point it's kind of excruciatingly slow. He hides his OP skills with his goofy antics. He never shot his gun until episode 5. We didn't even know he had a prosthetic arm until much later in the series, only a hint a little earlier. YES THANK YOU. YOU GET IT. I love Trigun because we're eased into the story, given time to get to know the characters in low-stakes conflicts before it eventually escalates to the main, high-stakes part of the story. I love how we get hints of who Vash is and his backstory leading up to "Rem Saverem" which was, for me, the most memorable moment of first watching Trigun. It was so unexpected, I thought I had somehow began watching an episode of a different show until the story began to unfold and i was absolutely glued to my screen for the entire episode. I can't believe they would consider that a filler episode it's literally one of the most impactful episodes and reveals some of the most important plot points like oh my god. filler is NOT necessarily a bad thing. my favorite episode of the show is "Quick Draw" which is 100% a filler episode but I adore the time we get seeing the relationships between Vash, Wolfwood, Milly, and Meryl develop as they spend time together in a silly little competition which ends up having higher stakes towards the end, but more importantly we get to see more hints that Wolfwood isn't your average priest when he progresses to the final round of the Quick Draw competition with his shooting skills and then the reveal of what is actually inside his giant cross!!!! and how can something be filler if the manga it is based on hasn't even been written out far enough to complete the story? (also "Hang FIre" and "Flying Ship" are partially based on the manga (tho this is the point it truly begins to diverge from the manga story imo) so how is that considered filler). and like the series is only 26 episodes. you can take the time to watch the """"filler"""" episodes here. damn sorry i have a lot of feelings and thoughts about the original Trigun anime but you summed this up perfectly. great video thank you love & peace

Sorry I wasn't more participatory in the process on the Patreon, but I'm really happy that you covered one of my suggestions! Trigun is one of my favorite anime due to the very same narrative components that you identified are original to the anime. @Py687 Жыл бұрын
Great video rationalizing why filler is sometimes made, and not always bad. Trigun was one of my first anime and I still recall feeling like the episodes were padding for a slow plot. It wasn't until I finished the show that I appreciated the tone and character set by the filler. I hope in the future you'll make another video "debunking" fillers. There is a lot of conflation online between filler, canon, source material, and plot relevance. Since filler often pulls from original omake created by the mangaka to fill volumes, crossovers, or holiday specials, it can't be simply defined as "content not found in the manga." Even outside of omake, filler chapters can absolutely exist in manga. Whether it's to push something out the door due to writer's block and time constraints, or to deliberately inject a slice of life moment into the story, sometimes you just get a chapter that does absolutely nothing to advance plot, character development, or worldbuilding. Many long running series have these in spades (famously Detective Conan). None of this inherently makes filler good or bad. But I think the first step to admitting this is to properly reframe filler.

Its not filler, since it stays consistent with all that happened, most of what happens is very much in the tone of the show, and more importantly, it veils the main plot in mystery, explores the world and the characters more, builds it all up to make the reveal even more impactful, AND is quite interesting and well written, playing out almost perfectly (some budget dip episodes and quality dips make it a little worse but its still pretty good), building a really great bunch of characters and telling a great story, even if the open, made up and wishy washy conclusion is a bit disappointing.

The first half is way too light and comedic, that it kind of set expectations and made the super heavy second half a bit jarring. Also, damn... the stuff the anime didn't get from the manga is pretty epic too. Hoping Second season of Stampede is also as epic.

I'm so sick of this modern focus on PLOT ADVANCEMENT PLOT ADVANCEMENT PLOT ADVANCEMENT. Episodic (or semi-episodic) series have more time to establish the world and develop character dynamics.

Character interactions are also plot advancement. Heck, many shows can, and DO get away with no 'plot' at all, mainly comedy stuff, for example one of my favorites being 'daily lives of highschool boys'... You mean MAIN plot advancement. The new 'trigun' completely abandons character focus altogether it seems and is pretty damn bad for it.

this is the real critisium of trigun stampede they're rushing the story and going throught way to quickly vash's story was not exclusivly about the gun ho guns, i dont think the series even had the rem butterfly scene to convay why vash won't kill and how knives was cool with it

I see some people arguing that Vash doesn't contain filler. So, I have to wonder, what constitutes as filler? What's the definition? Because, rather than referring to the placement of events within a story, I think the true connotation is simply whether the events are (not just relevant to the plot; or canon. but) adapted and taken from the source material or if they are new. All in all, I think calling Vash's early episodes "filler" is a means of saying that the showrunners had to take some artistic liberties and expand upon the original manga plot storyline -- while, at the same time, these artistic liberties are primarily goofier or less impactful moments (while all the while are meant to make the impactful moments all the more impactful when they happen). All the aforementioned contents of this convoluted comment are encapsulated by the word "filler". So I guess the word filler is quite nuanced and could have different definitions or usages. But TheCynicClinic used the word well and their argument is strong, and they explained the really cool backstory to me, in that much of the anime is restructed and reordered to compensate for the lack of material to work with.

Also for other series, people may call actual canon content that is slice of life or slower filler oddly enough

Its not filler, it's an episodic tale that drip feeds the major plot points. Y’know, like how most westerns do.

I wonder if that anime filler considers quite a lot of Cowboy Bebop episodes filler, even if they exist without a manga to put them up against, simply because they "seem" like a filler. anyway, thank you, banger video, I've literally been yelling about how good we had it with Trigun anime adaptation last year to all my friends. this video just proves me that yes, indeed, Trigun is just Really Good

Yeah I've seen people say exactly that, and also things like the volcano episode of Eva is filler, it becomes a useless term meaning 'parts I didn't like'. Thanks for kind words, Trigun is indeed Really Good.

YESSSSS I love the Trigun manga especially the later plot points but the anime is undoubtedly the stronger version of the story imo and writing off the original material as "filler" and the notion that that's bad could prevent people from checking out the show is a shame

The new Trigun is good in its own way with all the groundwork of the story out of the way. The old adaptation had to work with what they had. He still is goofy in some ways but things start tumbling and there’s great use of CG

Not really, the characters in the new one lack any depth... They're also very different from the manga, the show is different from the manga's spirit too, with both character interactions and chemistry, overall tone, and the full lack of comedy, comedic relief, and lighthearted stuff.

This is why I really dislike stampede version. The characters are either trauma dumping or info dumping. The new show feels way too bloated with life and death situations that you don’t get time to actually know characters motives or beliefs. The dynamics they have are super basic. They don’t really progressively become friends. They kinda just exist. The only one I can say has strong motive is knives and actually feels more of a protagonist than vash for me. Vash is just a punching bag for the plot. Knives actually makes a lot of decisions and is proactive. I was more invested in knives as a protag than vash. Vash I got tired of with his crybaby energy in this version.

People throw the word "filler" around too loosely i feel. True filler doesn't add anything meaningful to the story, characters, or world, and is just there to padd out the episode count. This wasn't really the case with classic Trigun. Just about everything means something or at least serves a purpose.
