Personally, i believe the trike (rear or reverse) is the safer option due to it's size. However, for any rider it simply depends on what you feel most comfortable with.

Since I have operated a Can Am Spyder RT Limited for the past 10 years, my comment about the two wheels in front is: "you have the third wheel where you want it, when you want it." Two wheels instead of one absorbing the centripetal force on curves. Not a criticism, just a point of conversation. I ride in a trike club with Gold Wingers, Harleys and Can Ams. I never rode a motorcycle until I was 62 years old, and by 66 I had my first Can Am. Thanks for your video.

There are 2 issues to consider here. 1 If you're an older rider with some mobility issues or are finding a big bike hard to hold up a trike is a good option. You can keep riding but not have to worry about stability issues. Most trikes have a reverse fitted so that makes things even easier. Trying to duck walk a 400kg Kawasaki Voyager is not easy. The speed limited electric reverse on the Goldwing takes care of that problem. Of course if you have one of those bolt on conversions that keeps the bikes driven wheel it's a different story. 2 How is your trike set up. A Can Am Spyder with 2 wheels up front and all the built in electronic safety systems and a "full speed" reverse is a different kettle of fish to a Goldwing or other big bike trike conversion. One is made as 3 wheels the other is converting 2 wheels. I've never ridden a trike conversion but I have ridden a Spyder. It's nothing like riding a 2 wheeler in fact you have to unlearn all the 2 wheel things you know. A Bon Trike with the engine in the back and the long rake on the front forks is different from the Spyder and the "Wing conversion. I've seen videos of Bon Trikes and others of that style where the front wheel has lifted off the road and caused the trike to become unstable at high speed because all the weight is at the back. It may be a rare occurrence but I've seen it. There is another option. Piaggio/Gilera make scooters up to 500cc with 2 wheels on the front. The wheels have independent suspension and lean just like a bike but have 2 contact patches up front. The front wheels can be locked when traveling below 5km/h meaning that when the bike is stopped the rider does not need to put their feet down so keeping the bike upright is not a problem. The width across the front wheels is much less than a Spyder so lane filtering is possible (if legal where you live) . Yamaha may a 125 scooter called the TriCity that uses this feature and they have a bigger bike (not sure of the displacement) that looks a bit like a transformer that also has 2 wheels on the front. I hope that adds to the discussion and the knowledge base for people considering their next riding option.

I'd have no choice other than riding one handed! As(following a very severe stroke five years ago), I am now paralysed in my left arm and would like a trike, as my balance is not as it used to be! I'm 49 years old and have two grand-daughters, so, I suppose I've got all the boxes ticked so far!!! However, I used to be an "Emergency Medical Courier Rider ", taking organs/blood/specialist medical instruments to hospitals for important operations to take place. Many times, I would have been carrying items to help save a person's life in an urgently needed procedure!! So, I quite literally was responsible for many lives, as I would also, very often need to travel very fast and in excess of the posted speed limits!!!

Interesting video just a word of advice when you steer the trike if you pull right to go right and pull left to go left you will find the twisty turn roads are a hold lot more fun on a trike. I ride two wheels for 50 years and just got a trike this year one of the best things I did was take a trike riding course it was amazing how much I learned with the course I did know that a trike could do.

I enjoy the option of converting back and forth from 2 wheels to a trike version with 3-4 wheels. 99% of the time I ride in the trike version. I have had two friends killed by being rear ended while riding. My trike is 60 inches wide in the rear. I feel that it is less likely to be rear ended.

Of course trikes are safer than two wheels. But for me, it's not about safety. I just love being on two wheels and yes my bike has tried to get away from me more than once but I love that feeling of losing some control and then fighting to get it back. Don't get me wrong though I don't hate trike's I just would probably never buy one. But I do love it when people are passionate about their vehicles like you are. To me as long as you love what you ride you my respect and I will always wave to you haha

Just a tip about the tires, I learned years ago. Since tires are designed for specific weight applications, the normal pressure ratings are for that weight. Example, your tires are most likely for a sedan of approximately 3-5,000lbs total load, or 750-1250lbs per tire. I am guessing your trike weighs somewhere around 1200-1300lbs total, and the front tire is taking some of that load, maybe 30%, so round up to 400lbs. That leaves about the same for each of your rear tires. Keeping in mind, my weight numbers of your trike might be off, you get the idea. Since they are rated far higher, you can safely go from the "normal" pressure of 30-32psi, down to probably 20-25psi, SAFELY, and comfortably. I learned this from a Goodyear dealer, when looking for tires for my Triumph TR6 I owned at the time. They required a 185-15 tire with a red stripe which Goodyear made, and he would happily order them, but at about 2.5 times the price of pass care tires that were 205/75-15. Using the 205's on my TR6 I aired them to about 24 psi. Tire wear patterns were perfect, and that sports car rode like a Cadillac.

I made the switch from 2 wheels to 3 about three years ago after my third knee operation and now ride a st100 trike. Like most things in life it's a compromise although I would say the trike is safer as it's more viable and less chance of coming off when you encounter adverse road conditions.

Hi Bill, I got 3 wheels after not riding for many years while the kids were growing up. I wanted to ride again and my kids told me to get a trike. They felt they were saver. I believe they are. I'm 70 now, and have spent 55 years on two wheels. My problem is age!! I dropped my Goldwing last July in a gas station, and wound up with a broke foot that didn't want to heal. Spent so much time in a boot with the foot that I developed sciatica. I sold both the bikes I had, and bought a trike last Wend. This is my first experience on a trike. I wouldn't say they are safer for cage drivers not pulling out in front of you, but they are safer in that they don't fall over if you loose your balance. They also stop faster. Still learning not to put my foot down at stops, and steering. But I ride more comfortable now, and with less worry, and stress.

Ahh, bummer. I am 60. You will love a trike. No way to drop it. It takes allot longer to heal when you get older for sure. My wife would never go with me if I had two wheels. She has taken many trips with me on the Trike. Sure, anyone can pull out in front of you and the do all the time. I really watch where people are in front and behind me. Leave enough room at stop light to escape if someone may run into you from behind. I got used to mine, right away. Had to drive it 380 miles to get home after I bought it. Never even test rode it.

My late wife and I have traveled all over the U.S. with two wheels. She told her son before she passed that the best times in her life was sitting on the motorcycle behind me, headed out on another adventure. It is an adventure that never stops as long as you can straddle a bike. I did test ride mine before I bought it, then had to ride it home, 105 miles. I put another 70 on it yesterday, and would have done more, but the heat was getting to me, and I had my dog on board. I have to consider her when she is with me.

I have a burgman 650 scooter trike and love it. Put 3000 miles on it the last two years. It is much safer than a two wheel bike. Have an extended windshield so no wind in my face and the bike is heavy enough that a strong wind will not push the bike. A trike is easier to be seen by motorist.

Have owned my 2017 Harley Triglide for 2 years (bought it early). I am much safer on it than 2 wheels: going around curves on wet pavement, hitting any oil or wet leaves or gravel, no tipping over on hills, etc. I can actually go around curves faster than I could on 2 wheels. So for me, yes, it is safer.

No they do not, all the Honda ones are triked from two wheels. But some of these companies been doing it to 30 to 40 years. They are actually better than the factory trikes from HD. Most all will have independent rear suspension and air ride by just pressing a button and not hand pumping them like the Tri Glide. Honda trikes are super smooth and ride fantastic. I let a friend ride mine and he has the touring HD. He said mine is super smooth and rides so much better than his. I will bet they get one now.

There is no way a 2 wheel bike or a trike or even a small car can be safe to ride in large USA cities. I purchased last month a 2012 Honda Shadow 750 from a lady with only 1100 miles on it. She scared to ride it and felt it is too heavy. The bike is not heavy but I did not blame her for not riding it in a large city with heavy traffic. The only car I feel safe in is my large Nissan NV van. The culture in the USA is more power more speed all the time. Unfortunately, driving motorcycles is no more a practical safe way for transportation.

She's got a big booty! I guess it depends what your risks are. Crash at highway speeds won't matter if you have 2 or 3 or 4 wheels, physics will limit what your body can bare. Side cars or trikes have there own down sides, but the #1 thing is you as a rider feel comfortable. Then you can make the right choice if needed not driven by fear. If it gets you out on the road and you got a smile on your face, then 2 wheelers can relate with the joy it brings. Keep putting miles on her and sharing the ride.

Yes a trike is safer should you encounter patches of gravel or ice. I am a all weather rider. I have my motorcycle converted to a trike for winter riding. In the summer months I ride it two wheel.

How is the ride on the back seat? My wife has a bad back and a rough ride would really hurt her back. Also which trike would you recommend, California sidecar, etc.?

My wife rides there and is is completely comfortable. She does not even need any extra cushion. She is small though maybe 105lbs. 5'1.

No, I have had bad luck weather going east or even north to the midwest. Tornado, monsoon type rain. I seem to always venture west. Better drier weather.

Can you lean the bike in turns??? I've been in emergency situations where I suddenly had to swerve to the left into the other lane to miss a parked car in the road, then back right into the lane before being hit by oncoming traffic. Doing that on a trike seems like it would be catastrophic. I've hit gravel in parking lots and curbs and went down. I don't consider that much of a wreck though, just grrr. I was almost blind at the time so.. figures. I quit riding, now I got my eyesight back. It does look superior to a bike though for interstate travel. I'm going to fix up my quadcopters and take them around on my motorcycle to fly. Those cars are probably pulling out in front of you not because they are stwpid, but because they can't see you at all in the rear view mirror. Remember, you're a tiny spot or thin line in their rear view mirror, not a big semi truck which is what they are looking for real quick in a glance before they pull out. Just about nobody can see you when you're on a bike. Ride that way and you'll probably be safer. I can tell you for a fact motorcyclists will see you even less, because their mirrors are... vibrating.

It can, but I have air suspension in the rear and I have raised that up to get over some bumps. Works great.

Yes it can be. I try to run around speed bumps. I will also go over the bumps at a 45 degree angle to that only one wheel is traversing over the bump at a time.

Lane split in California for 30 years before I took my tax dollars and ran. Lane splitting is as safe as the rider makes it. Only YOU are responsible for your safety. As far as people pulling out in front of me, I can't remember the last time it happened. Maybe because, like with lane splitting, only I am responsible for my safety.
