20:35 What this guy was trying to say is that he's a gardener here, but he's not a permanent employee; he's just a temporary employee, and he doesn't get paid enough. He said that he's a hardworking gardener, but his monthly salary is 5,000 INR, which is around $63.90 in American dollars. Also about the flowers: He thought that you liked the flowers and thought that you'd want some, so he was trying to say that he can't give you these flowers (from the garden), but he can get new ones from a flower nursery for you. Also, the guy who gave you the flower first wasn't saying that he works in a temple, but he too was saying that I'm a temporary employee here. You mistook the word "temporary" for "temple." He gave you the flower because he was trying to impress you guys; he thought you guys would maybe tip him for his good service as a gardener. Then you said to him, "How much tip do you want?" and he answered, "About 50 rupees," which is equivalent to 64 US pennies. You guys really misunderstood and disrespected both of these guys. They weren't scamming you at all. The second guy even showed his uniform to you. They actually work there. Next time, try to understand what the other person is saying before calling him a scammer. These two were just poor and innocent gardeners. I hope this clears everything.

Exactly! The guys were so rude to the locals, just to get a laugh for the camera. They would rather the locals just begged them for money, rather than try to show initiative and sell them something... and take from them the only thing they have - self respect. They came across as entitled rich kids, rather than scam hunters...

There are differences between hustling and trying to scam. Hustling is selling a product or service for price that’s compared to or around set price. Scamming is trying to upswell something that isn’t what u say or a false service. There is a bit of both going on.

It’s because Jaani is a local and he obviously knows the reasonable price for these things. They see obvious American tourists and approach them and pitch prices that are 10-50 times the cost hoping the American is not aware of the amount. That’s why he’s bargaining with Jaani in Hindi to let him “get a good price” from the Americans he is with. It’s because he knows he’s inflating the price

Hmm, not sure if how you treated the locals in India see fair. We need to understand that not everything is a scam. Many of these people who sell these things aren’t selling to scam, but are selling to make a living. Their pricing and yours aren’t going to be the same. It’s like going to a foreign country and buying a house for cheaper, then when you come to the Uk to buy a little flat for like £50,000 (very realistic here), you call it a scam, when in reality it’s not. That’s just the world now. And I feel like jaani was not very respectful to them. For someone who has lived in poverty and seen what it looks like to be a scammer, I would have expected the way he spoke to the sellers to be a little different. I mean, literally shouting at the seller saying “we want lamb.. No make it 50!” Like come on! You can’t bully them by telling them their prices are too expensive and that it’s a scam, when clearly their condition speaks for itself.

Much appreciation for all you guys do. On scams or bartering, I have a different perspective. Gained it while traveling through southeast Asia. Am I seriously bartering a 50 cent coconut to a dimel?, no. Look, 50 cents doesn't mean a thing to me, so I just pay it. As long as it's not an egregious price disparity, I'm not going to haggle. A dollar means a lot more to others than me. Not like I'm wealthy or anything, but I'll typically pay what they're asking. Sometimes, I'll willingly get ripped off because it means very little to me, but means a great deal more to someone else.

Exactly. This so-called "guide" they were using was trying to get everything for 50 or 200 Rupees lol. Even a boat ride. Tourist Trap is the wrong word here unless you are visiting India from South Africa. A Tourist Trap describes being ripped off but how can you get ripped off in India if you come from any Western Country? The only way I could see is if you went to the Electronics Bazar in Mapusa, Goa and paid more for an unreleased phone than a typical Indian citizen mainly because you expect to pay more for it than you would even if you were ripped off and Even the opening was a joke where he was arguing 50 rupees (64 cents) was a scam when the tickets they just bought were 24 Rupees (31 cents). At the end of the day these people are just trying to make a living and in what world is $3, 6 or even $10 for a cross water boat ride a rip off or a scam? The Gondola boat ride in Italy is at it's cheapest 30 Euro per person! (2491 Rupees per person)

When a business man tries to sell his products which doesn't have a price tag to a tourist at his best selling price to earn more profit they call it scam but if a tourist or any person bargain at very low price to pay they call themself as an innocent person, according to this video the one who bargain are also a scammer because they also try to scam the business man by trying to get their products at very low price by mocking,by teasing. In a business sector a seller should try to sell his products at a high price and a buyer should bargain at this satisfaction price if they agreed to a certain amount they concluded the agreement and buys the product we cannot say that it's a scam.

I love how you try to expose scammers. But these weren’t scammers. These were hardworking people who just saw an opportunity to make a little more than usual. Take the paper mache jewellery box. It’s a craft. Just because locals have set the prices low doesn’t mean it’s a fair price. Take the same thing, sell it on etsy and people will call it “handcrafted art”. I get that India has a bad rep for scammers, but most people are just hardworking people trying to make their ends meet. You can just say you don’t want it and move on. It was a bit distasteful. There are many KZbinrs who call out vendors for overcharging tourists but they’re not disrespectful or mock them for it. The same people who try to overcharge you; sit with them for a while and they might end up inviting you home for a meal. People in India love foreigners. Saying this as a Northeast Indian who gets mistaken for Korean/Japanese most times.

Just a few points I'd like to make. I feel incredibly sad and ashamed of Indians who sit in big buildings and try and scam old and vulnerable people abroad of their hard-earned money. I feel equally sad when people who generally do a sterling job of exposing and preventing such scammers from hurting others do not realize a few simple facts: 1. These people are right in front of you trying to sell you stuff which is grossly overpriced. There is no hidden scamming or deceit here. 2. Many of the things they sell on boats on the lake are hand-made and take ages to make. Art AND EFFORT of this kind is priceless. It is a different matter that we might not be able to afford those prices. The choice is ours. Try to bargain reasonably, then take a call - to buy or not to buy. This is far different from scamming where the victim does not know that they are being cheated. 3. Well to do Americans (am not even talking of super rich ones) who are pretty privileged compared to these poor tradesmen can certainly afford Rs. 1800/- for the papier mache craft. Sure, try to bargain and get the best price. Don't buy it if you don't want to, but don't mock these people. 4. The tourist season is short lived and come winter they are not privileged enough to central heating or well heated shops where they can continue selling their goods. Is it surprising that they try to make the most of the season to make as much money as they can? Am sure none of us could survive in the kind of situations they live in. So please have some sensitivity NOT TO MOCK THEM. 5. Yes, the prices are hiked, sometimes ridiculously so. But they are for ALL tourists. May be a bit more for those who earn in dollars and euros (or may be mistakenly assumed to do so). Whatever it be, it is nothing like the SCAMS you bust. 6. Honestly, I'd rather have these people overcharging tourists straight to their faces rather than scamming old people on phone or accepting Rs. 500/- from politicos and their stooges to get involved in terrorist activities. I hope I never have to watch such a patronizing and condescending video from yourselves in future. Of course like I said above, the choice is mine. I have requested you not to make such videos. To watch them or not to is my choice. Sorry to say, but you come across as over grown kids full of self importance and trying to show off to a bunch of your audience.

Exactly. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico was similar to this in town so I only went once and then never again. I just wanted to walk the town, see the churches, talk to my fiancé, maybe get some souvenirs, and we were called out to, followed, grabbed in some cases (I do not react well to being touched by strangers), hustled, harassed, and bugged almost the entire time. After we got back to the hotel, I said we’re sticking to the resort from now on. I was so annoyed at the haggling and hustling when I just wanted to see the place. Even when you’re trying to eat, they’re bugging you to sell stuff.

Considering the fact Its Indian Occupied Kashmir where its either a curfew situation or an unrest going on every other month, these vendors get 3 or 4 months of Tourist season at tops Rest of the months are literally dead season as they are desperate to earn and take care of their poor families. I won't call this Scam, They are trying to sell something for a higher price its thier choice. Its call Hustling not Scamming They are desperate to sell They dont know when the indian Govt will impose another curfew and most of the season is winter. So you gotta understand they have families to take care of , Its just desperation to survive. Im sure if you were in their place in such situation you would do the same thing.

In Europe I learned the secret to not having scammers approach me thinking I'm a tourist was to buy clothes at the local stores like H&M or Zara with the fashion of the area, and suddenly I would become invisible. It was crazy too, I could be speaking French with a group of Parisian friends and the scammers still would approach me, but the clothing thing I was just walking with my girlfriend who was also Hispanic American and we would just be avoided by the scammers. However no matter how I dress if i go to India I would be targeted as I cannot change my race, so now I know to make a sincere local friend if I ever get the amazing opportunity to go.

$1 = roughly 90 rupees. These people are not scammers. They simply understand exchange rates. 2,000 rupees is about $20 bucks. 1,800 rupees is $18. These are perfectly reasonable prices to charge people from wealthier nations. Instead they want to pay $2 for a boat tour, and $3 for the little box. Come on-who is cramming who here. I find this behavior truly offensive.

Found in any and every country in the world, as much as i extremely dislike the traditional internet / phone /email scammers, who destroy lives and families, the ones you encountered in Srinagar, can be sent off by a strongly worded "no" in their own language or an open handed palm towards them. There was no need to be condescending towards any of them, Jaani's smirk and tone tells a lot , we go back to cultural details we non-Indians cannot grasp. I understand the need for content, subs, likes , in order to fuel the machine, i believe it can be achieved in a more "accurate" way though. The thing is, I didn't see any scammers in this video (and reading through the comments I'm not the only one). The Trilogy guys came off badly in this video, if you didn't know their work it just looks like privileged rich guys taunting the poor. Traders bartering on the price for less than 5 USD is not the same as a scammer trying to steal $10,000 from an unsuspecting granny! If you don't want to pay the asking price, don't buy it...there is no scam.

@@parthkachhia4117 Yes, but that isn't a scam, it is just free enterprise. Any business can charge what they want for their products, and the customer has the choice to accept or decline. E.g. I think iPhones and louis vuitton bags are hugely inflated for what they are, but nobody exposes them as scam companies. And "rip-off" means to be cheated or defrauded...again, how were they cheated exactly? That description would only be appropriate if for example they bought an iPhone but when they got home they realised it wasn't an iPhone but a cheap copy - but nothing like this happened.
