Thanks Bob! I like your simple clear explanations and your friendly manner in sharing them. Even though I know the basics of shrub trimming, it's been a while, so this has been a good brush- up. I have a burning bush and a couple spirea to trim today. Yes, I know it's not the perfect season to do it (just after Labor Day here in Pennsylvania) but they're really getting out of hand.

Hi Bob. I have a burning bush that is too big now (about 9 ft tall by 9ft wide) and I would like to cut it to 7ft x 7ft. I see the inside of the bush only has branches but no leaves. I'm afraid if I cut to the size and shape I want I'm gonna ruin it. Can I cut/trim it that much? When is the right time to do it? I live in the Chicago area. Thanks in advance!

As you will see in one of my earlier videos we reduced the size of a Burning Bush hedge considerably without any problems: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5OaiYp_p7h8n6M It's always best to do any severe shrub cutbacks in early Spring just as the new growth is beginning to emerge --which is likely March or April around Chicago. It also helps to fertilize the shrub(s) at the same time to promote new growth.

Hi Bob...great video! I have a dwarf burning bush...not super big in the middle of my garden. I live in a condo so the bush is not super big. You mentioned you like the Echo trimmer but you didn't mention which model. I would like to get one but as I searched I see there are quite a few. I don't want to buy anything more than I need so I would love for you to recommend something I can use to trim and shape my dwarf burning bush in the spring and fall. It is in the middle of my garden so what I think looks best is a "globe" look. Thanks so much!

If you only have one Burning Bush, a good quality set of hand shears ($70 to $100 range) may be all you need. Good tools will last a lifetime. I like my shears made by True Friends and another set by Sandvik, while Corona also has excellent quality garden tools (..love their Felco Model 2 hand pruners which retail around $53). Try A.M. Leonard (online) to see all your options. If you still feel you need gasoline powered hedge trimmers, I like my smaller set of Echo's (for small to medium sized shrubs) that are similar to model SHC-225S (20-inch shaft) and retail around $359. The other set you see in my videos is the SHC-225 (33-inch shaft) that retails for $419 and gives you extended reach. For electric powered hedge shears (lighter weight on your arms) we always liked the Little Wonder brand. Hope this helps! BTW, I do not get paid for these product endorsements.

We used electric 'Little Wonder' trimmers for years and they were nice... IF we didn't cut the electric cord.
