2024 Corn and Oat Crop Check

It's quickly getting close to the 4th of July, so it's time to see if the corn is knee-high. Alan brings us along to see how the oats are looking, and then how the different fields of corn are growing. The corn planted varied in varieties and what fields had manure or starter fertilizer. The heavy rains and cooler temperatures have also had some effect on the corn and how it's looking.

Looks like wild morning Glories! We use to get a lot of it in the corn, if they flowered out, they most generally have a white flower!

It's Hedge Bindweed - some call it wild morning glory.

There's a difference between Morninglory and Bindweed. The former ONLY blooms in the morning, but the latter blooms all day. Same family of weed, but different growth and reproduction capabilities. 2,4,D will knock both out.

@@HowardFarms1 I'm not going to argue that! Both are real problems to deal with, and I have chocked up a forage chopper with the nasty, viney weeds. Prior to GMO crops, I watched (and slowed down for) the viney mess pulling corn into the head 10' in front of it. Was NOT a fun harvest!

That vine is called morning glory. They are a pain in the ass in corn. It'll wrap on everything on the combine.

Great looking crops. My sister said she thinks she is seeing the corn tassel out in the fields near her. That's in the middle of Michigan. Hope you were able to get some warmer nights and also top dressed the corn.

Oats down by Sherburne County are ripening, but not harvested yet. I hope I didn't startle you too much at the breakfast. That weed is probably Bindweed, also known as Creeping Jenny or Field Morning Glory. Biologically it is related to Morning Glory flower sold in seed packets but not the same. Bindweed develops a deep root system if left unchecked and is difficult to eradicate.

Hi guys your maize// corn in the second two fields looks like ours over here in Ireland, same thing it’s the cold I think, we had a couple of grass frosts in June which is pretty unusual for where we are. It was the coldest June on record and it ain’t after getting any warmer now that we are in July we haven’t had much rain,definitely nothing bad enough to wash away the fertiliser but ours was planted in the first few days of may and sod all of it is knee high, all ours goes for silage.oats looks good!

Your crops are looking really We have Rodney oats too looking pretty good. We're under water a bit. All our hay is off now the creek is out of the banks now and we have some smaller brown trout swimming in the drainage canals . We probably harvest some of them too.

Swath the oats just when the top oats turn brown. Dry down to the stocks a slight green to a light cream. Works amazing.

You either need more starter or Get your nitrogen on. You probably already know but try to put the nitrogen on just before a rain. Doesn't take to many days of hot sun and no rain to make the urea go up in the air. They call it volotzation

I never plant corn without starter fertilizer . 10 to 15 gallon mix 32+ 1034+zinc+sulphur. If you want 200 bu. Plus and lot of nh3 !,,

Could the yellowing in the corn at 7:00 just need some more calcium? I tested calcium addition two days ago on my squash field where I had yellowing and they deepened back up to green. Calcium deficiency blocks uptake of existing fertilizers, or so I'm told. For a test mix you can use crushed dried egg shells and vinegar then after foaming reaction stops just dilute with water and put on the plants. Water left in the pan after making hard boiled eggs is supposed to work too. If test looks ok then look at field sized amounts and spreaders. Another farmer has this idea the cold weather tends to create the yellowing too, slowed uptake of minerals. Your other corn and the oats look fantastic.

Is anhydrous ammonia used in sileage production or for picking corn? I think the weed is wild morning glory.The Round Up should kill it but you might need to add some dish soap to act as a surfactant.

Those rocks are all worked stone tools. Anything with an internal notch is not natural. That elongated white pear shaped one on the left is a pecking stone. The fist sized ones will have shallow concavities pecked into them where the surface finish is rougher. Play with them and the concavities fit all your fingers like magic. Big black flat one on right is some kind of cutting chopper. The small pointed ones are end scrapers for short stick mounting. Concave curve in back for stick abutment, underside slightly concave, and usually just one side a notched groove for lashing material. Woodlands period starting 4,000 years ago to 1850 AD. There's early mid and late woodlands periods. I'm talking about the instant he shows the ground about the weeds and next half minute or so.

Many years of tillage have also broken the rocks in strange ways. Really hard to say, but I have seen some rocks break during tillage.
