TTArtisan is really a cut above the rest when it comes to the new Chinese lens manufacturers. I had their trio of 17/1.4, 35/1.4, and 50/1.2 for micro four thirds that I picked up for 200 total. Opens up so many opportunities I would’ve been priced out of otherwise. Wish them nothing but more success

To me the biggest advantage of the Trioplan having all the elements in the front half of the lens is that you can unscrew the back and DIY an adapter to use the lens with medium format cameras and make it even better for portraits. It really shines on a Pentax 645 or Mamiya 645 and is easy to adapt. You could also adapt it to a Pentax 6x7 but the size of the frame really pushes the capabilities of the lens design and gets a bit difficult to work with.

This is actually a result of the Trioplan being a lens from the old idiom: the same lens made in a multitude of focal lengths to cover different format areas. When the 35mm format became mainstream, some of these lenses were adapted to fit by using a suitable custom focussing helicoid to bridge them to the camera. The 135 Primotar was originally made for 9cm X 12cm format, and there was also a 180 version originally for 5" X 7".

The pattern in the Trioplan bokeh bubbles look like caustic curves, possibly caused by internal reflections off a circular surface i.e. the walls of the lens.

I've only recently started using vintage lenses, in large part due to your channel, which my gf and i are big fans of. After spending many thousands of dollars on new, state of the art lenses, I started becoming underwhelmed by the sameness of the images, as though you couldn't tell which lens was used for any given shot, save for my 1.2's and 1.4's giving obvious bokeh differences. I very much enjoy your patient and informative delivery, and keep the fence samples coming, we love them, lol! But above all, your enthusiasm and genuine admiration for certain lenses has been instrumental in my purchase decisions, and so far I have loved every lens I bought, and did so because I was very informed about what I was purchasing (the different models of the super takumar as an example). The money I have saved, and the reignited enthusiasm I have when packing my camera bag, well, I have you to thank for that, so thank you, truly.

Interesting and useful comparison Simon. The only suggestion I'd have for the future videos is to use the same (or as close as possible) focusing distance, since that affects the "bubbles"; and not only their size. I'd also recommend using helicoid adapters to everyone, instead of extension tubes, for most situations. For Sony, for example, that would be a thin "flange" adapter to M42, then M42 25-55mm helicoid and that's it. Magnification can be controlled (no need to remove the lens to add and remove tubes) with 0 to 30mm of extension available, plus there's infinity focus. Another reason I dislike the tubes is dust, having to expose sensor whenever I need them. Just a hint to those viewers who are unaware. Oh yes, I also sometimes focus with such helicoid, if a vintage lens has stiff focusing mechanism and I'm in no mood to open and lubricate it.

A perfectly timed video release! I just got my TTArtisan lens in the mail today ;) Very nice to see that they are so close together when it comes to the rendering, and I guess thank you for confirming my reasoning for buying a new lens instead of an old one xD Although most of my "vintage" lenses are all pretty dust free. Then again, I shoot mostly on Minolta lenses, maybe those haven't been passe around as much as some of the "rarer" and sought after lenses ^^

Well, I have both of them too and are currently testing them against eachother. I have a pristine copy of the Trioplan and get somewhat different results in some categories. I also noticed that the Trioplan is 1/3 of a stop faster than the new TTartisan. The bokeh is also more creamy and soft and the bokeh balls have a better and smoother color gradient and looks more like soap bubbles compared to the TTartisan which are more circles with a strokes . The TTartisan has better sharpness and contrast, less blooming and just slightly cooler tone.
@Simonsutak
@Simonsutak 11 ай бұрын
Many thanks for this feedback - very interesting. There's no doubt the condition etc. of each of these old Trioplans can impact images. But I like and agree with your description of the soap bubbles. I'm looking at some close ups of the bubbles at f2.8 on my screen right now and I'd say that the Trioplan's soap bubbles do look more three dimensional, rather than simply circles. But it's quite a subtle or hardly noticeable difference in other images I took.

Nice comparison video Simon. I ordered the TTArtisan weeks ago and received my copy a few days ago. I had been using an adapted Pentacon 80mm f/2.8 projector lens because the Trioplan is too expensive. The old Pentacon projector lens is likely going to be retired because of the color differences you mentioned, and because I can stop the TTArtisan down if needed. I can only use the Pentacon at f/2.8 because it has no aperture blades. Again, thank you for the great comparison video. And thank you TTArtisan for finally providing an affordable alternative to the overpriced Trioplans.

Although I'm not often too fond of the idea of manufacturers 'stealing' lens formulas, even if they are 'outdated', however I think this is an example of it done right. This is a unique and desirable lens, especially in the modern market with no currently available comparison. The vintage Trioplans that are around are, as you point out, often worse for wear after decades of use and/or neglect and importantly not common in m42 mount. The ttartisans provides greater access to this lens without insulting of damaging the value of the original, especially to collectors.

I'd argue most lenses ever made were "stolen" designs, if for no other reason than the thousands, if not millions, of 50mm lenses produced through the years.
@theangrymarmot8336
@theangrymarmot8336 9 ай бұрын
There isn't any "theft" as most of the revered vintage lens are just copies of other designs - and the ones that aren't are either rare enough the average photographer can't afford them - or deteriorated enough that they aren't an accurate representation of the lens anyways. I hope all the "great" vintage lenses are recreated/copied so that way people can experience using them, instead of increasing rarity resulting in them being scuttled away in collections, and only those who can afford to spend thousands get to have the experience.

The triplet was a Cooke design, a fast anastigmat that only needed three elements. After the patent expired many, almost all, lens manufacturers started making their own triplets, and the Trioplan was only one of them. Zeiss, Rodenstock, Schneider, Voigtländer, Goerz, Ross, Busch, Wollensak, Kodak, Staeble, Enna, Steinheil, Ernemann, RÜO, Plaubel, Agfa, Ludwig, Friedrich, and so on, all made triplets. The lens manufacturers had their own engineers who tweaked the triplet design and came up with their own formulas, and I'm sure the TTArtisan design has been tweaked and uses different glass than the old Trioplan. The Trioplan itself was probably reformulated a couple of times since the 1920s.

Thanks for your wonderful follow-up comparison video. I'm sure that you enjoyed putting both lenses through their paces, and you now have two 100mm f2.8 bubble bokeh lenses for your efforts. I do have to commend TTArtisan for producing such a faithful re-imagined lens. Particularly impressed with the comparion images of the rain on the roof of a car in bright sunlight. Different vintage lens would produce wildly different results and yet these two were amazingly similar. I've owned a Meyer-Optik Görlitz Primotar 135mm f3.5 for about a year and it's been alot of fun. It does suffer from many of the faults that you describe. Though that is part of the challenge and thrill of the chase. Mind you if I was in the market for the Trioplan then the TTArtisan is a no-brainer. I wonder what classic lenses are on their radar.

My humble opinion the bubble bokeh ‘look’ of lenses like these ( and one can get a similar effect very cheaply reversing the front element of the old Russian Helios) can all too easily get cliched and tedious very quickly unless used with discretion. You buy one, use it for a week and then it hardly gets used again, for this reason and it’s only MY opinion it’s not worth spending too much on any ‘quirky’ lens, the Trioplan examples ( mechanical and optical conditions) I’ve seen are insanely overpriced for the claims of its‘magic’. So IF I was going to buy such it would be the TT.

Very interesting test! One question, what was the white balance setting when comparing colors? If it was on auto it could make the Trioplan look brown when it was actually more blue/cold. It's important to use a fixed white balance when comparing colors. I also got the TTArtisan and think it has a slightly warm color rendering.
@Simonsutak
@Simonsutak 11 ай бұрын
Good question and point. I used a variety of white balance settings across the cameras. When I get my FF Sony a7IV back from repair, I'll do some formal FF test shot comparisons with both lenses on the same camera and if the colour conclusions differ with that camera in any way I'll report back. When I used my Sony a7IV with the TTArtisan, I would describe the TTArtisan's colours as "clean" rather than warm, or slightly warm. But it's all relative - that's probably because I use a variety of radioactive lenses as well and they are can be very warm!

Hello Simon thank you very much for these fantastic videos which show so much about vintage lenses. If you ever have time, here's a question: on several lenses (smc takumar 28mm, domiplan 50mm etc) when i screw the lens it stays at full aperture. the little piece of iron that closes the diaphragm is not blocked by the M42 ring. The only solution I've found is to glue this piece of iron in place. do you think this is normal? thank you!
@Simonsutak
@Simonsutak 10 ай бұрын
Hi, many thanks for your kind words. The Takumar lenses should stop down OK on most adapters. Unless it's a faulty lens. You have to made sure the M/A switch on the back of the lens is set the right way, otherwise it the aperture will stay open. If moving the M/A switch doesn't help, then you should look on-line for a M42 adapter that will work with M42 lenses. My K&F Concept adapters work well. Some other vintage lenses do need modifications to the pin at the back. Here's a good video on one mod. if you don't want to use glue. I've used this approach on other lenses. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3PbfaGsmq9lr7c There are one or two lenses where I've had to saw off pieces from the back of lenses! The Fujinon M42 lenses are the main culprits. Hope this helps. Cheers, Simon

Hi. I purchased a Meyer-Optik Gorlitz Primotar E 50mm f3.5 for not a lot of money a few years ago. It had fungus, dust etc. on the inside and the body of the lens was in a poor state too. No rust or dings, but the metal looked like it had corroded or at least was very dull and tarnished. With nothing much to lose, I got a tin of silver polish (the polish that comes with a cloth inside, not the liquid version), and polished the metal. More of an experiment than an informed solution. The metal turned almost black after some wipes. After more work cleaning off the blackened polish, the metal was clean and shiny-er! The lens looks a good deal better than it did before. And since then I've cleaned my silver metal lenses with silver polish, if they need it. (I don't go mad on polishing). After polishing the lens, I take a ear bud dipped in some industrial alcohol and carefully try to remove any polish that is left down in the engraved letters/numbers. Otherwise the numbers will be whiter rather than black or coloured. Hope this helps. Someone may tell us it's a terrible idea but it works for me.

Hi, yes it works normally on a K1 from 0.9 m. Except on my K1 it focusses just past infinity.

@@Simonsutak No apology needed! I was genuinely curious. That list definitely details what is the Pandora’s Box of buying vintage glass. Even worse is the younger ‘vintage’ glass. A Meyer Oreston with separation: the faulty doublet goes in the oven and is fixed. A Zeiss Contax G 35mm: very strong adhesive that needs a costly, expert separation and repair, while apparently still being susceptible to separation. Balsam stood the test of time much better, IMO.

I'm not a Nikon user, but apparently you need to have one of those M42 to Nikon adapters with glass, so the lens can focus to infinity.

Actually just a regular adapter (without glass) would work for Z-mount Nikons, as these are mirrorless. Just look up “M42-Z adapter”. K&F Concept ones are generally good quality and not that expensive.

Simon, Did you try stripping, cleaning the Trioplan then running the test shots? As I wonder as there is dust in the lens if there is grease sublimation as well reducing the optical performance. I have noticed with some of my old lenses, the performance is considerably improved after a comprehensive service.
@Simonsutak

Yes, I did and you’re right. Dust, grease and surface haze can reduce optical performance. For example, with my Trioplan the surface haze reduced contrast and produced a more washed out look to images.

Oh yes, the "Trioplan" fad. The Trioplan was just one of many many triplet lenses back in the day, affordable lenses for amateurs. I do think the triplet design deserves a comeback as a cheap alternative and for the nostalgia, and so does the Tessar design, the dialyte, and the Heliar (real Heliar).

At 5:24 (aside from the dust issue) 7:20 and 13:46 comparing the two images of the lenses, the Trioplan is clearly much sharper with better color rendition than TTArtisan! 4:12 Having the Trioplan on a crop sensor camera and the TT Artesan on a full-frame camera even on a crop setting the images out of the two cameras are NOT directly comparable. The images out of the full frame camera even at crop setting are going to be far superior compared to the images of Trioplan, a full frame lens on a crop sensor camera. Then there are other issues like the sensor resolution and sensor quality. A fair and accurate comparison would of course be to have both lenses on exactly two equal cameras with equal settings.

This "review" seems a bit biased, most likely because of the referral link. At 8:36-ish the TT clearly shows glow issues and the Meyer doesn't. In most of the images the Meyer also seems a little sharper. Also, dust is just dust - this lens can be cleaned very easily because of its design. And bottom-line, buying the Meyer is also a good investment, they are only getting more expensive over the years, while getting a TT won't even allow you to get the money you got it for - so if you can afford it, get the original Trioplan, clean it up and use the "real thing".
@Simonsutak
@Simonsutak 11 ай бұрын
I understand why you say this but I think you’re being a little unfair. The video wasn’t meant to be a review, but a series of images taken with each lens, so viewers can see how they perform. Sadly my Sony FF camera is being repaired so I can’t do direct head to head comparisons for a while (Sony are not being very helpful on info.). I don’t think I ever said the TTArtisan was better. My conclusion is that it gives you the vintage lens experience and soap bubble bokeh at a good price. For what it’s worth I’m on holiday right now and I’ve brought the MOG Trioplan, but I’m lucky to own both. On the dust, my copy had dust, hairs and some surface haze on the inner optics. It created dust bunnies in the shots and also a slightly hazy contrast in the sun. Partly madness and partly necessity, I opened it all up for a clean. I know not everyone would be prepared to do that with an expensive old lens.

It isn't biased at all. Stop using negative accusations to try to justify your differing opinion. This video was a great comparison between an average condition vintage lens and a modern recreation. He is the one looking at the images directly, you are watching a video, compressed, over a streaming service. Your "seems" is invalid because of this. On a personal note - I find anyone who uses the term "investment," "real thing," and "if you can afford it" to be completely missing the point of photography in general, and bordering on "gatekeeping." Talking resale on a $150 dollar lens is hilariously silly and irrelevant.
@ggrancharov
@ggrancharov 9 ай бұрын
@@theangrymarmot8336 Of course vintage lenses ARE an investment and the lens we talk about goes for about $700+ on the secondary, if in good condition. I think having gear that keeps its value or even increases it is actually very relevant to photography or filmmaking and this isn't gatekeeping. Also the 'modern recreation' of that lens has already been done by Meyer itself a few years ago, so the TT is at best a cheap copy of the design. That being said, its a KZbin comment section where viewers post their opinions - and as someone who own's the trioplan I posted mine.

I have both lenses and my copy of Trioplan is excellent, paid $525 for it. I shot many pictures using both lenses on two full-frame cameras on tripods next to each other. Clearly, the colors and bokeh texture and rendering of the Trioplan were superior, sharper, and more natural hence more vintage. The TTArtisan has a digital/artificial look to it, and the images at f2.8 are soft and absolutely not usable. TT Artesan's best and only f-stop is 3.5 for best bokeh results.

No, I respectfully disagree. The colour differences between the cameras are subtle, even less in raw, (and I’m sure you know Pentax use Sony seniors albeit tweaked). Have another look at the different sky/cloud colours in my comparison shots - that’s not camera related, it’s lens related

when you import the raw files into LR, you will notice that the temperature and tint are not the same opening in default ADB standard, even if both are set into the same K, like 5600K on both cameras! it shows that the color engines are different in interpreting colors though on the same sensors!
