Trip to Alaska # 22 McCarthy and Kennecott mine

Exploring Kennecott Mine - Once a bustling town, copper was mined here from 1911 to 1938. The town was abandoned overnight when it was closed down. It is a National Historic Landmark. We also go to the town of McCarthy, it was featured in a television reality show that followed the lives of the residents. It was called The Edge of Alaska.

I enjoyed it very much. If things go well, I will be doing this in June 2023. That is 2 months from today. I will be driving from Texas to Alaska and back. A solo 30-days road trip. I will blog about it on the internet and share the blog. I own a 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid that I bought brand new in 2020. I will drive it to McCarthy. I will drive it on the Dalton Highway and Dempster Highway. And many other places in Alaska before coming back home. My road trip is estimated to be 12,000 to 15,000 miles long in 30 days.

Thank you very much- wow! It is an awesome you will see so many amazing sights and lots of wildlife- we had planned on doing the dempster but it was shut down For a while because of bad weather- they were waiting for the ice to break up so the ferry’s could run and this was around mid-June. We took with us a garmin inreach mini it runs off the satellites and allows you to keep in contact with people by sending and receiving text messages it also has an SOS button to use if you have an emergency it will give your exact location. We did not have any cell service through Canada and very little in Alaska. Also I suggest an electric bug zapper we used every night to clean out the mosquitoes in the truck and our camper- They were all over us - we also had head nets and deet 40 - your will have an awesome time - we look forward to be hearing about it👍

@makingtimenowmtn8995 Thank you VERY MUCH for these details. You answered some questions I wanted to ask. Let me ask again. If my plans go well, I will drive the Dalton Highway on June 21, 22, and 23. I will drive the Dempster Highway on June 25, 26, 27, and 28. Do you think the ice would still be a problem for the ferries on the Dempster for those days of June 25, 26, 27, and 28?

Last year they had a bad winter and everything was three to four weeks behind. I just our journal and on June 16 2022 it still was not open because they still having problems with a ferry. The best thing to do is to check with visitor centers when you are in Alaska and they should know

Also check to see when The Top Of The World highway opens - last year it didn’t open until June 1st if don’t already have one get “ the milepost” we used it alot

If it is not open on those dates, that would be bad for me since I do not have any hotel reservations for those dates as I plan to sleep in my car while doing the Dempster Highway. I plan to do it in 4 days and I booked a hotel for 1 night in Inuvik. 2 days to go and 2 days to come back to Dawson City. I plan to go all the way to Tuk. I need to buy an extra spare tire since my car is low and has a higher risk of tire punctures. But I plan to go slow and slightly reduce the air in my tires.
