Lyrics by Kevin Leathers
My cousin was a strong kid, but his body disagreed.
His heart wasn’t doing well.
Another surgery he’d need.
He lie on the table.
His body wouldn’t mend.
I wish I knew him better, before it reached the end.
Back when we were almost eleven, my cousin took a trip to Heaven.
Left us alone.
Time kept going on.
It’s been a long time now.
We keep moving on.
Samuel was a friend.
We were freshmen at T.J.C..
That summer back in Longview, the wrong place he would be.
Cops came through the tall brush, and they began to flee.
Shots rang out and bullets flew.
He lie face down in the creek.
That night at half past seven, my friend took a trip to Heaven.
Left us alone.
Time kept going on.
It’s been a long time now.
We keep moving on.
Dad loved playing baseball.
He dreamed of the big leagues.
Instead he went to Korea, to meet our enemies.
Back home with momma, they started a family.
Of the four kids that they had, the second one was me.
Growing up I missed him.
He always had to leave.
Work took him on the road, then one day he took me.
That year we bonded.
Good friends we would be.
Then a silent killer murdered him, and took him away from me.
Back in the winter of ‘87, my father took a trip to Heaven.
Left us alone.
Time kept going on.
It’s been a long time now.
We keep moving on.
It’s been a long time now.
And we keep moving on.
