I am ALWAYS thrilled to see people spread the gospel of Triple Triad, because it's a masterpiece - for all the reasons you mentioned and then some. I think it's important to note how Triple Triad permeated every aspect of the game. You transformed monsters into cards, earned cards from boss battles, had entire sidequest chains about finding elite players or discovering the whereabouts of certain cards. Heck, you had a freaking Card Queen to challenge and an entire club of card members in Balamb Garden! It felt like a living, breathing element of the world. Plus, the GFs and party members having their own cards too!? Brilliant. There was nothing quite like finding who had Squall's card, or how to win Rinoa's card by losing another one to her dad. It felt personal. Significant. And, if all else failed, being able to transform cards into spells and items boosted your odds in battle! It was a win-win in every arena.

well said. Mini games that are world wide are the best, giving personality to the game world. As you said TT is not only a good game but is connected to many other aspects of the experience further incentivizing players to engage with it.

That's such an amazing point about the rules shifting by region as a way to signify cultural differences. It really is a shame games so rarely explore that.

I'd never really given thought to a card game as something to just ground you and keep you in the moment before. It seems obvious now that you say it outloud, as it needs a lot of focus until you're comfortable enough that it becomes automatic, but I can see how it could be good mindfulness practice! It's important to cherish those things that extend beyond language and culture boundaries.

I'm surprised you didn't mention any of the MegaMan Battle Network games. Those are pretty good. There are also some interesting genre mashups like Hand of Fate which is a combination card game and action RPG. But I understand your emphasis is on the social interaction so none of those technically count. Good video.

The grinds I have done in FF14 to get some of those TT cards is a little embarrassing, as was that stupid frog NPC who refused to give me the Alphinaud and Alisae card for A WHOLE HOUR. Nuts to that frog.

Triple triad make a big remark on my childhood. I redraw the cards and play with my highschool friends until I got into a conflict with one of them. Teacher have to mediate between us so I can get my cards back. I do get my cards back, all of them. Because the person spread terrible gossips to supertitious parents and they command their children to no longer play with me. Well, that person called me to apologize like 10 years later.

no one ever talks about bug fables's card game and I think that is a crime. a Paper Mario style rpg, where when you scan your enemies you also get playable cards of them for the side card game? incredible. why does no one talk about bug fables?

I actually played Bug Fables! It's really fun, minus a few awkward dialogues. I oughta find an excuse to talk about it in a video!

The shadow verse switch game is a perfect example of all of this, you literally play as a new student at a school and want to start up a shadowverse club and win big torments with your friends

yugioh GX spirit caller comes to mind as my favorite. if I went back to play it I'm sure there's plenty of unpolished jank in the game. but rpg progression through upgrading your card collection is so damn satisfying, especially because the characters around you will ALSO upgrade their decks at certain points in the game. Great vid GC!

Triple Triad got me interested in card games, Yu-Gi-Oh and tetra master did their fair share too. The first smart phone I ever had I obsessively looked for an app that was like triple triad.

Love the video. Tetra Master is my favorite, but I've only run into a couple and you'd mentioned them. I appreciate your expounding on the pointlessness of digital incarnations of existing card games. It's called The Gathering, and serves as a primary social outlet for me. I don't want to play a simulation, I want to have a conversation with my friends sharing a table.

I guess this came up since I began playing FF8 again this week. I love games like Witcher 3 that include a nice side game thats easy to learn & hard to master, although Gwent wasnt really complex. Triple Triad however was much more complicated than Gwent. I think every RPG should have a game inside the game (or more than 1) because it makes the world feel lived in. Of course these people are going to do something in their spare time. Id love to see one where games are played only on certain areas & YOU have to introduce a game into a new area (like the Southern Continent has a card game but not a dice game) so you open a town or a store there & a dice gaming place & sell the equipment & it becomes popular. Then a new champion in the region appears & you have to defeat what you create. I don't know why these easy things have been done yet.

Loved your thoughts on this video. Especially the concept of feeling foreign in a new country and learning their ways. Never saw it that way. Thanks for the perspective 😊 You might want to checkout Indie new commer Attack on Hex Island Plays as easy as Triple Triads but with arrows and combos like Tetra Master in a more simple to understand ruleset. The whole game is a love letter to these two games with Pokémon elements sprinkled in, and I love it. :)
