How I interpret this story wise Sonic gets transported here without knowing what is going on, which is why he asked Tails if he is OK, but as soon as he saw EXE, he knew something was up, then he saw Knuckles and assumed the worse had happened and assumes this to be a future. He then fights Robotnik like how he would normally since despite what he interprets to have happened, that won't stop him.

Yea, my interpretation is that at the part with eggman, sonic assumes eggman caused this, maybe creating another sonic who killed everyone. (eggman has had plans like the metal virus where it got out of control and he relied on sonic and friends to help)

Theory: After the encounter with Xeno in "Lost My Mind", Sonic managed to escape the jail that was once his body, later, he's found hidden on the now burnt down Angel Island, this is where Tails comes in: Xenophanes sent him first so Sonic lost his trust and gave up... he didn't. He fought, with the tool that was meant to kill him: His memories with tails. The Xenophanes encounters (1st and 2nd) represent the memories being corrupted. After escaping Tails, he finds Knuckles. He fights him, trying to not cry ag all, all of his friends are gone and he doesn't have anything left to fight for... though he still fights. Desperate and in agony, he fights Eggman motivated by 1 single phrase: "Let's end this". Knowing this is the end of the song, he fights to be inmune to Xenophanes (Remember that Xeno cannot kill you until you lose against him on a game). The final Xenophanes battle is the hardest one, they fight remembering his old friends with resources. His will as Tails, his motivation as Knuckles... and his experience as Eggman.
