1995 was also the year that Rugby Union took major steps to becoming professional many All Blacks had signed up to a similar rebel league to Superleague. From memory the financial backers for the rebel league was an American cable tv company. 1995 was an interesting year for both codes

As an Auckland Rugby League fan before during and after the Warriors entry into the comp. I was disappointed how the club sided with Superleague so early after afew stalwarts had been advocating and getting a bid together to be allowed into the comp for 10 years. I know the NZRL were keen to go to Superleague but the Warriors should have showed abit more loyalty to Ken Arthurson and the ARL for giving the club a license. Many a time after a Warriors loss lol Id wonder if that decision to go over to Superleague jinxed the club lol

For how much everyone whinged about the Super League, its amazing how the ARL/Packer suddenly managed to cough up millions to the players when SL came along. Players seem like the big winners out of it all.

Ahh yes money money money. It’s all about money now isn’t it. How fantastic that we have such a strong game now that the suits have milked it for all its worth eh? How good that everyone now looks back on the old games and says “wow how shit was it, glad Uncle Rupert and News Ltd sorted it out”. Best decision Rugby League ever made to make it all a money grabbing circus

John Ribot's arrogance, and murdoch's greed, put the game back more than 10 years.. It cost some teams their futures.. DISGRACEFUL!!!

It’s kind of ironic Matty Johns is telling this story considering his brother was the one who ended Super League.

@@WTC-1990 Well I don’t blame players for wanting more money, the problem is clubs, game, governing body & sponsors cannot maintain that type of monies for too long without a steady stream of income, that can support those type of payments. On the other hand to kill traditional and historic clubs to funnel all the concentrated money into 1 or 2 Sydney clubs is not the answer. Why??? Because disenfranchised fans of clubs are not just going to support a new club and won’t watch the game. The idea is great but it’s fanciful to assume that a notion, idea or something else will kick off so quickly.

No, their was no money and no sponsors who can support that type of player payments. What happens when they retire with no employable skills. I know do a Paul Gallen or Sony Bill Williams watch two overweight has Beens fight on television where they hug and gas themselves out for millions of dollars. Or give me a job as a commentator at Fox Sports or Channel Nine and force Stirling and Ray Warren out because you have too many players doing commentary. They should be putting players on conditional contracts & that should include one of the three aspects, is what has the player done to ensure their employability is secure.

Sorry to say but the game was dying in England before Super League. The big soccer clubs get all the media attention, and it's only Wigan, St. Helens, and West Yorkshire that keep the game alive. It's a shame because there was a really good opportunity for the RFL to become a great competition again in the 80s, when guys like Sterling, Kenny and Wally Lewis would play in England during the Australian summer. Unfortunately that stopped in the 90s, aswell as Kangaroo tours. Now the ARL/NRL has since got dibs on all the best playing talent.

Ah yes of course. News Ltd owned comp with part ownership of two overpowered clubs, the Broncos and the Storm, playing in grand finals every year with a comp consisting of the Sydney Generics, the Hunter Mariners, the Adelaide Whatevers, Perth, and a few other franchises with an artificial fanbase while the core of rugby league history, passion, and support is tossed aside as Rupert Murdoch buys another house. Rugby League is a working class game. Turning it into a circus has benefitted far too many non rugby league fans for my liking.

Why do the arl players never talk about the money they got paid? Is it to protect that crappy narrative that the arl was about the game, super league was about money. Certainly doubt those guys played arl for free.
