RULES:
The rules are the same as regular chess except for these changes. For a refresher of those rules, check out this video. The object of the game is to capture your opponent’s king, there is no check or checkmate.
Get an Uno deck and remove all the 9s, 0s, and all the action and wild cards except for 1 reverse and draw 2 in each color, and all the regular wilds. Shuffle the deck and deal 7 cards to each player, then place the deck face down next to the board as a draw deck. Flip over the top card to start a discard pile, if it is an action card, ignore the action. Players look at their own cards but keep them hidden from their opponent.
Pick a player to go first, then turns alternate. On your turn, you must play 1 card from your hand to the top of the discard pile that matches that card’s color, number, or symbol. If the top card is a wild, you can play any card on it. You may also play a wild onto any card. When you play a number card, move any corresponding chess piece as indicated by the number played.
Numbers are referenced the same as standard chess board notation with “A” = 1 ascending to “H” = 8. The piece to be moved, must be starting the turn on the same row or column as the number played. The card can reference any one of your pieces starting in the corresponding row or column. For example, if white played a 2, that would be this row and column allowing white to move any one of these pieces.
The chosen piece then performs a standard chess move. After you play a card, you then draw a new card from the deck and end your turn. If you are unable to play a card, or all your plays reference no pieces you can move, then you discard 1 card from your hand and end your turn, without moving a piece. The discarded card is the new top card in the discard that matched. You must play a matching card to the discard if you can, even if you don't want to. At the end of your turn you draw 1 card. If the draw deck runs out of cards, shuffle all but the top card of the discard into a new draw deck.
If you play a wild, you may move one of your pieces that is anywhere on the board. If you play a reverse, then you undo your opponent’s last chess move. You are allowed to undo the capture of any piece, including losing your king. If you play a draw 2, then you do not move a piece. Instead, draw 2 cards then discard any 2 cards from your hand. You may pick which card is on top. The discarded numbers do not allow you to move pieces and discarded actions are not activated. Then end your turn. That top card is the new card that must be matched to.
Kings may move to a threatened space. To castle, you must play a card that targets your king, and you may castle through threats. En passant is allowed like normal.
If you are down to your last piece, you must say “uno” before the end of your turn. If you don’t, and your opponent catches you, then you instantly lose the game. Otherwise, the first player to capture their opponent’s king, without it being reversed, wins. If both players each play 3 cards in a row and no chess piece on the board moves, then the game ends in a draw.

Something else you could do for the +4 is draw 4 cards then discard 3, or something like that. You also don't need to remove the 0s and 9s, they could just be cards that take up room in your hand and don't do anything if you play them. And skip could mean that you get to place one of your captured pawns on your back rank. If you have another skip, you can play it on top of the one you just played to get one of your captured minor pieces on the back rank

here are some of my concepts for UNO and UNO Flip decks: 0: forfeit your turn 9: shuffle the draw deck and forfeit Wild cards: after moving a piece, choose a colour to continue +1/2/4/5 cards: same as +2 [Wild Draw cards affect the opponent, giving you another turn] Skip/Skip Everyone (Flip): take another turn Flip: everything flips to the other side Wild Draw Colour (Flip): choose a colour, the opponent must keep drawing and discarding until they draw a card of the chosen colour Swap Hands: swap hands with the opponent and forfeit Shuffle Hands: gather cards from both hands, shuffle and deal (beginning with opponent), then forfeit Blank Wilds: write your own rules

UNO UNO QUARTO: How to Play The objective of the game is to get 4 matching tiles in a row either horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Get the UNO QUATRO base and tiles with an UNO card deck. Remove the 0s, 8s, 9s and every action card except for the regular wilds from the UNO card deck. Choose a dealer to deal 7 cards to each player. Left to the dealer or youngest player goes first. To decide, play war. If there is a tie, redo. After someone wins and discard their first card, play continues clockwise. First, discard a matching card, then draw another. The number shown on the discarded card is the tray you must drop your tile in. After dropping the tile, take another from the bag. If you cannot match a card, exchange a card from your hand with a card from the draw pile, if you still can't match, you lose your turn. If you cannot match a tile to any adjacent ones, exchange any tile with another. If you still can't match, you lose your turn. Wild cards can be played on anything, they also mean that you can drop a tile on any tray. But, the player who discarded it cannot choose the color. The next person can discard any card they have in their hand. If you drop a tile which matches with two adjacent tiles (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) you may draw 2 more cards to add a higher chance of matching. There are 2 reverse cards, and you have to get them with luck by getting a card in the draw deck. To use them, if you get checkmarked, you can use it as a defense unless the other player has one.

0 & 9 should just be free actions, Skip skips the opponent’s turn and counts as the previous number, Wilds should be color specific, Wild +4s are draw 4 / discard 4 with a challenge, calling “Uno” could be cleverer - such as “UnoMate” or “CheckUno”.

The draw 2, discard 2 card feels iffy in terms of good or bad. You spend 1 card, draw 2 cards, discard 2 cards, draw 1 card at the end of the turn. Overall it feels like it has no actual impact on the game state, instead you are just doing a skip turn but meh since when you skip a turn, you discard 1 card and draw 1 card at the end of the turn. In addition, you can only play the draw 2 card when the color matches, so the opportunity is limited. It also means that your hand size never changes. You start and end each turn with 7 cards. In theory, the +2 card is therefore just a dead card. It would be more useful to have it be you draw 2 cards and discard 1. That way you can still influence the game state while still having a net positive. Instead of moving a card, you gained an additional resource and it is limited by the fact that you can only play it when the color matches.

u can still play a +2 on another +2, its just that both players used up a cycle not moving any pieces, I think the fact that we have to move pieces based on the column and row that we play on Uno is hard enough as it is, so hand washing nearly half your hand for a chance at a good move is fine
