Tripod 101 for Artists, painting plein air

I found a well used Manfrotto 190 20 years ago at a garage sale. That had the 056 head with three star adjustment knobs. Used it for camera then started to see pochade boxes attached. You are right about the weight and durability of these. I wouldn’t use any other brand. I have a couple of light Slic models. There are handy with a small digital camera but for painting, the Manfrotto is the one. I now have the ball head that you have. I use it mostly to mount my iPad as I get Kindle books so I can tweak the font size so it’s in continuous use for that. I have another 190 with the 056 head for painting. Also mount that head on a short desktop tripod for mounting a pochade on a table or in the back of a folded down seat in the car. No quick release on the 056 but I’ve been using it for years and it works great. No arm in the way there either. Wouldn’t mind a light multi extension travel friendly tripod that is suitcase friendly and thought you might have talked about the one you have in the middle a bit as well.

if it is tippy, you can always add weight. Film crews use sand bags, or even tarp lines in extreme conditions. I have the same one in aluminum, it works great, and i think they have one in carbon fiber if weight is really a priority (hiking).
