Written by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman, Stewart came up with the idea for the song after his wife of eight years asked him why he didn't say "I love you" more often.

Great song! One of the best of the 70's. The guy IS in love with his girl but doesn't want to admit it. There is also a great video of a performance of the song.

The technology did not exist to produce this song in 1975, so they invented it! They had another hit on a later album that hit the top 10. It's called The Things We Do For Love. After the band dispersed, the two main members of the band formed a duo called Godley and Cream. They had one hit called Cry. Please hear the remixed version. The single version is badly cut.
@cave19584 жыл бұрын
Godley & Creme left 10cc a very long time before the band "disbursed". 10cc had quite a few hits. Godley & Creme biggest hit was "An Englishman In New York".
@TheCornishCockney4 жыл бұрын
"they had another hit". errrr,i think you'll find they had a string of hits and their albums were among the most creative you could find at that time. and its Godley and CREME who were also in at the beginning of MTV and produced many huge vids.

When I first heard this song, I thought the line "I've got your picture on the wall. It hides a nasty stain that's lying there" was hilarious!! It's still pretty funny.

Nice reaction dude! You sussed this one out pretty much. What people in the comments have got to remember is that this band (like me) are british, and this was the 1970s...society was still run by old fashioned victorian mentality people (and still is, partly). This is a song about being IN DENIAL which is the british condition. Obviously he loves her but he's not supposed to say that cos he has been taught (big boys don't cry!), as we all were, that displaying your emotions is wrong, especially for a man. To paraphrase Shakespeare: "Methinks the gentleman does protest too much"...In other words, if he's banging on about it not being true...then it must be true! Sorry for the rambling comment I'm a bit stoned lol. Keep these reactions coming man!

I remember being a kid in the 70s falling asleep with the radio on and waking up in the middle of the night to this song when they say “big boys don’t cry”. It scared the crap out of me! I thought someone was in my room! Lol
@mikrobspen4 жыл бұрын
I think the dreamy "big boys don't cry" is a memory of his mother who taught him to hide his emotions. So as an adult he cannot admit being in love.
@GaryBonaducci6 ай бұрын
Yeah, precisely! I always wondered who exactly was supposed to be saying that. Was it the girl he was interested in? Or someone else? But when you watch the music video, the singer is doing the voiceover on that part; so it makes sense that it's his inner-self remembering someone telling him that. Plus, the gentle tone of voice she's using is like how a mother would talk to a young boy. It's actually sad, though, that she (or his father) never gave him guidance on to how to court a girl he's interested in, nor the whole thing about being in love, handling getting rejected, and so on and so forth. But at least in real life the song's writer did stay together with his wife for many decades. Maybe this song helped her understand why he never expressed his emotions often to her?

I remember hearing this when it was first produced. It was a total contradiction, but then I understood. Of course he's in love, VERY much in love.

10CC were a great band, experimental rock with some progressive hints. They became victims of their pop success when the had their two big hits I'm Not In Love and The Things We do For Love. After that they were mostly known for those two songs and the rest of their excellent material was for the most part ignored.

For US the song should come with a caution- Do not play until unless you know what irony means. The singer knows better than anyone he's in love. That's the whole point ffs.

Oh yeah, he's bad in love, but broken hearted and afraid to admit it. You should look up a youtube on how this was recorded. It's amazing. Those sounds are actually overdubs of hundreds of voices, different notes on separate channels and played back on a mixing board by sliding the volumes up and down as if it was a keyboard!

Trippy, when this song came out, I thought it was a song by Paul McCartney and Wings. If you listen to McCartney and Wings from that same period, it sounds exactly like 10CC and Vice versa. IN any event, this is a great song. The guy keeps trying to make both us, and himself, believe he's not in love with this gal. By the end of the song, you know he's so in love, it's not funny! Thanks Trippy...

Great song about a breakup and the fragility that comes when you may have made a terrible mistake. Not many songs are written from a man's perspective. The synth music is just one big lump of emotion in your throat.

@Syydneh Austin "you simply don't have a soul" Uh, what? You're claiming someone doesn't have an actual soul because they don't like a certain popular song/recording that you like? Correct? That's like saying someone doesn't have a soul because they don't like a certain recipe of mashed potatoes that you like. Are you the creator of all living things? What is your grand position to be able to deem someone to be a without a soul? Even then how can someone even exist without having a soul? Perhaps such extreme claims may come back to bite you on your own day of judgement. Ridiculous and extreme. Hope you never serve on a courtroom jury duty, you're not qualified. I happen to like the song, but I'm not going to damn someone just because they don't.
