I know you already got a new camp chair, but if you find yourself needing to use the tripod seat again, save 3 or 4 metal lids from jars(we seem to end up with the ones from spaghetti sauce) and just put one under each leg and you won't sink into the soft ground anymore. I just keep them in a small ziplock and duct tape it to the bottom of the seat so they don't get lost between uses.
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
That's an interesting idea about the jar lids lol Would certainly work in a pinch! Thanks for sharing Diana!

A couple of tech tips, You can mix the organs with some dressing to make stuffed crab, they are full of protein. When I walk in the shallows I usually take a stick with me and test the ground in front just because of things like Rays and crabs burying themselves in the sand. It will help keep you from getting stung, pinched or bit. We are down there sometimes, maybe our paths will cross. Great videos, you gained a new subscriber. Take care.

I would consider buying and learning to throw a cast net. You can catch all kinds of bait, including mullet, shad, mud minnows and shrimp. If you want to throw only lures, the gulp line of soft plastics on a jig head is extremely popular on the gulf coast here in Texas, especially for speckled trout, reds and flounder.
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
+robertintexas Robert, thanks for the comment! I actually bought myself a 4' cast net and I've been practicing in the yard with it. I've gotten decent at it I guess I'd say.... I'm going to give it a go on my next trip in a couple weeks down around Pensacola Florida. Should be a good one!

I d like to share two thing with you. First take some PVC and attach two leg of your seat, by drilling two holes in the pipe. You will also be able to use it as a sand spike for your fishing pole. Make it long enough. Then cut another peace of PVC pipe 5 or 6 inch long and put a hole in it for the third leg. This will stop the legs from sinking. Second item, I found more crabs closer to the reeds, shake the reeds and they come out, you just scoop them up. Wish I were there, it was a lot of fun, at Hurlbet field, and Fort Walton Beach in my day.
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+Jim Skaggs I think I understand what you are saying about the PVC. Sounds like it might work until I can get a decent chair.... lol I do need a sand spike for a fishing pole! Never though of shaking the reeds. I was looking in them pretty hard at times and found a couple but I think they were smaller maybe. I'll try shaking them out though, sounds fun!

+SailingandSuch why yes I do live in Washington. I live in a small town just south of Seattle named Puyallup. Please by all means check me out on Facebook., I'm always looking for a pen pal to talk with about gear. What you like and what you don't like . what works for you and what doesn't. Get you some live minnows you can always put them in a net sack and drag them behind you and they will stay alive. You can also get artificial minnows and split tail sparkle beatles. As far as shrimp it's seasonal. Get a cast net learn how to throw it and well where I'm from catching them when the tide is going out is best. Shine a light at night and you'll see them popping on top the water.

You should make a light (but warm) under-quilt from an army poncho-liner! Its the lightest weight blanket i own, but the warmest.
@Mike...9218 жыл бұрын
+Mike 1969 p.s. - just double the blanket up, sew the open edges together, add a channel on each end and add shock-cord (elastic string/paracord type stuff) and hang with carabiners off your hammock ridgeline.
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
+Mike 1969 I've read about the poncho liner underquilt.... I nearly made one before I bought the one I have now. I think I probably read somewhere that a dedicated underquilt might serv me better so I went that route. I was really close to pulling the trigger on making it out the liners. Maybe sometime down the line! Thanks for the suggestion Mike! I know I have read good things about them....

THanks for the tips! Fishing more would help, I just don't have a major interest in it so not much motivation there..... I just like getting out there!
@saltlife3168 жыл бұрын
I get hat but it does help round out the videos, my favorite parts when watching is the activities you do, catching crawfish, crabs or what not.... bring the cast net out get some time for bait and just throw the rod in holder while just enjoying being out there might be a compromise

Rod holder, I like that one.... I could do that..... THanks!

Hey man, just ran across your channel. Long time kayaker/backcountry camper living in Pensacola, just about to move to South Alabama for school in August. I'm overdue for a trip, hence my finding your channel. Great vids! Just dreaming of the next one in Mid April off of Pensacola at Fort Mcree. If you ever make it over that way, it's a great fishing and snorkling at the Jetties. As far as fishing goes, all of those grass flats should be good for trout and reds, check out gulp shrimp. They are scented and it brings in fish. If you catch a small fish like a pinfish, just throw it on a hook and you're more likely to catch some dinner. PS: at that first spot, those aren't angelfish, they're spade fish. Good eating!
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
+Marf Menarf Hey Marf, glad you're enjoying the channel, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! What school are you going to in South Al? Pensacola? Ft. Mcree? Funny, that's my next planned destination.... Should be down there in the last week in April. Gulp shrimp? Gotcha, think I might have one or two but I'll need a few more I guess. I hope to get myself a cast net and catch some live bait. Thanks for the fish ID! Say, any decent/legal spots to spear within yaking distance of Ft Mcree?
@jdbeach28 жыл бұрын
I'll be heading to U of South Alabama. The fishing at Ft. Mcree is nothing short of amazing. I always take a variety of bait, from shrimp to fish up to a foot long. You can also find ghost crabs there which make great bait for redfish. We shark fish and fish for dinner from shore while we camp. We've caught grouper, spadefish, sheepshead, sharks right near the jetties there. The south jetty is more productive because it gets deep very quickly. The spearfishing situation is tough there, because the jetties are protected. There are some reefs offshore nearby, but the currents there are nothing to mess with. We lose a few swimmers and kayakers near the pass almost every year.
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
Nice school! Good to know that there is decent fishing there. I hope to be able to catch plenty. I'll remember that about the south jetty. Yea, I knew they were protected.... If I can't catch anything then I'll probably resort to netting some crabs or spearing some stingray. I'll be careful. I'm pretty cautious. Well, maybe not cautious but I'm always watching things like current and weather.
@jdbeach28 жыл бұрын
+SailingandSuch Nice, never tried stingray. If you're into spearfishing, check out my channel. I'm a commercial lionfish diver and do a lot of spearfishing. There's a few kayaking videos and some hiking stuff too.

Me neither lol, just heard you can and I usually can't catch anything.... I'll definitely check it out, wish I were more local and could get into that. Pretty cool sounding career...

Great trip. I know exactly where you were. I had no idea you could get away with camping there. My go -to lures are white 3" Gulp Shrimp and DOA shrimps, though I actually fly fish the most. You can eat rays, I never have, but I have seen the wings cut out with a cookie cutter. Supposedly they taste like scallops. Fun extra. TC/SS - Stan
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+Deep South Experience Thanks Stan! I did some asking around on Facebook groups and found out you could camp on the spoil islands but I was uncertain of the spot near the pass. Thanks for the lure suggestion! Is it legal to kill and eat the rays? I've heard of them being substituted as scallops as well. Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video and energy! Have you done any of the North GA rivers? We have a group that gets together a few time a year for some kayak camping, and fishing in the mountains. Awesome times!

+Brad Powell Thanks Brad! I haven't been up to the North Ga rivers yet but I'd like to one day. There are so many great places out there and up around your way there are some real beauties. One day.... One day.....

as always.. love your vids !! I use my google maps also for planning. Just finished a 130 mile Nottoway river here in VA. Moving to Florida in 3 years , cant wait to kayak those waters. Do you ever have issues with gators when yaking down there? MIKE
@TripSmith8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike, glad you enjoy them. Wow, what a trip! Nah, never had issues. I don't worry about them a whole lot, you kind of get used to them. But honestly of the places I've been kayaking, I've only seen one and it was dead lol

Another fun vid, thanks! Check out the Coleman Rambler II stool for $12 at Amazon; good and cheap. Some basic searches on this site should give you ideas on what lures or bait to use and where and when to look for the fish (sorry I can't help as I fish mostly freshwater). Also, how about including some camp setup instructions, knot-tying, location selection for your hammock and tarp, gear specs, etc. in the footage? There are some great bushcrafting and survival channels that could help you lighten your load by teaching you how to use resources in your surrounding for food, cooking, etc. Btw, the bonus footage was awesome, I like the way you psych yourself up for the adventures...and your taste in music ain't that bad! ;)
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+MG-70 Your absolutely welcome! Just took a peak at the Ramber II, looks like I'll still have the issue with it sinking in the sand.... Thanks for the suggestion. I'm about like you, freshwater is where my experience is. I should be headed down a river this coming weekend so I should be able to catch something I hope. Ok, I can surely do that, thanks for giving me some ideas and stuff to focus on, it helps a lot knowing what people want to see. I'd love to learn some wild edibles.... Maybe I can figure something out. Glad you enjoyed the bonus footage! Take care and thanks for commenting!

Hey Trip! Love the videos! I used to be a Boy Scout and I love the water and Boating and sailing. I especially love camping and the combination of the 2 is awesome! I want to plan a trip my family has 2 kayaks. It would be awesome if you could give me some advice for what I should bring and do. I would like to go kayak camping with my friend and I on a lake called lake george in New York. Thank you in advance. Henry Schneider
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+Henry Schneider Wonderful Henry! Glad you enjoy them! (should have a new adventure uploaded by tomorrow night) Some advice on what to bring? Well that is a pretty broad question and I'd probably point you to my "Kayak Camping Gear List" video (kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKLcc3efpNZ8maM) and say start there. Then maybe check out some of the videos in the "Gear Talk" playlist. Then if you have specific questions hit me up. As for things to do, don't worry to much about that if it's your first trip, there will be plenty to do ;).

Have been enjoying your videos. Do you ever run into issues about where you choose to make camp? I would like to start doing some overnight / 3 day kayak / camping trips but don't want to get run off in the middle of the night.
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+Kris Wotipka Glad to hear that you are enjoying them Kris! I never have.... *knock on wood* I do use my better judgement and there are places I have considered that I didn't want to chance (military/government land). I know that I'm very careful not to leave any trash or cut down important vegetation and the like. I don't think in the middle of the night you would get run off as long as you don't have a fire blazing that can be seen if you are in questionable area. I say just be smart and give it a try!

hey man love your vids just wondering what type of kayak you have I'm upgrading from a pelican angler 100x and would like to know what type yours is Is and FYI when you're in the water with the stingrays shuffle your feet so you don't step on them
@TripSmith9 жыл бұрын
+Trent Wiser Thanks Trent! That one is a Perception Sea Lion Shadow. It serves me well. I think if I were to buy another one I would pay attention to how the hatches open and close (easier the better) and how comfy the seat is. The hatches on this one do pretty well, I really like them compared to my grey Wilderness Systems yak. It seems the newer kayaks have easier hatches to deal with. The seat is decent but they are all depended on the person, some people love certain seats, some hate the same ones..... I tried to do the stingray shuffle some of the time, thanks for the suggestion.
