Hi Trish!! The first gen apple pencil that you got charges at the bottom I believe! The second gen (which I have) connects and pairs magnetically to the side! :)

The iPad 10th generation can only use the first gen Apple Pencil- but it has to have a USB-C to Lightening adapter to get it to pair to the iPad! I had to go to the Apple Store to figure it out 😂

Well, the pen looks like a 1st generation pen which means you need to charge it first, then plug it into the iPad to pair it. Then unplug the pen from the iPad port to use it as it will be paired from that point. You should be prompted. This must be done each time you want to use the pen and the pen is charged. This is my unprofessional amateur advice. Hope it helps 😅 Good video as always. Keep ‘em coming.

I know this video was a year ago... but for reference, the 1st generation Apple Pencil has a Lightning plug. In contrast, the iPad 10th gen has a USB C port and they cannot be directly connected as many comments are saying... to pair them, you need a male USB C to female Lightning adapter along with the iPad's USB C to USB C cable :(

Hey Trisha, So I noticed you had a slight struggle with setting up the Apple Pencil and or if you would like to refer to it as connecting it, Its rather simple, If you take the little cap off at the very end of the pencil just where the little silver ring thing is, It will look like a little charger type thing, If you plug that into the iPad it well then connect to the iPad, I believe for the keyboard if you check the bluetooth settings or if you just sit the iPad on the little stand thing that is part of the keyboard it should connect/link up to your new iPad.
