TRISHNA , EPISODE - 1
From the archives of Doordarshan.
Trishna was the Indian version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and suitably adapted to an Indian middle-class family. All the characters of the novel were maintained in the show, with their traits shown exactly as in the book.
As in the novel, the family has five daughters, the second of whom is called Rekha (character of Elizabeth Bennet, played by Sangeeta Handa). She is honest, intelligent and has a lively disposition. She does not think much of those who are pompous. She meets a rich, handsome guy, Rahul (Tarun Dhanrajgir as Mr. Darcy) at a party, who has gone there with his friend and sisters. She is instantly prejudiced against him due to his pride and arrogance. The elder sister, Roopa (Jane Bennett in the novel) falls in love with the friend, whose sisters do not think much of her family and persuade him to jilt her. The role of the youngest sister, Lydia Bennet was portrayed by Kitu Gidwani and the character of Mrs. Bennet was played by Ratna Bhushan.

There is no unnecessary background music, no overaction, and no unwanted surprises. Tele serials used to be THAT good. Artists used to look good without heavy makeup or decorations. I miss that stage of life!

All through 2018-'19, I used to keep telling my ib students how I wish I could show them this adaptation of Jane Austen's novel as they never enjoyed reading Pride and Prejudice. The price quoted for buying the video was 4K and considering the students' disinterest , I gave up. They loathe the book because of too many characters in it. Fortunately or unfortunately, their written exams have been scraped owing to the pandemic. But much to my delight, I found this treasure to brighten this prolonged lockdown. DD was a treasure trove that aired many meaningful, thought provoking, relatable and very entertaining serials and art films unlike the stuff that the channels dole out today. Those were the times of great content, storyline, excellent cast, characterisation, theme and direction. Subah, Buniyaad, Hum log, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Darpan, Ek Kahani, Tamas, Bharat Ek Khoj, Idhar Udhar, Waghle ki Duniya...too many to name here. And the classy art films... those were the staple diets that nourished the viewers then,a thorough treat that still has the taste lingering on...

I have read several people say that pride and prejudice on which this series was made was written a century ago or 50 years ago. No it was written in 1813 by the incomparable Jane Austen almost 200 years ago. It is a great credit to this show that it has been beautifully adapted to 1985 when this show was first shown. Having watched every version of this book adaptation right from the one starring Sir Lawrence Oliver in 60s, the bbc adaptation in 80s and the film in 2005 and the highly forgettable Bride and prejudice , I would still say Trishna is one of the finest adaptation because it is faithful to the book. While many adaptations got Darcy right getting carried away by his large than life character , this is probably the only show that got Elizabeth right even right up to lizzys features including a 'pair of intelligent eyes '. Lizzy had a depth and a personality to change Darcy and change herself which many adaptations failed to portray. Here Sangeetha got it right down to the finest details. Darcy of course is perfect as Tarun. And even Ravi as Bingley , Rupa as Jane, Ruhi as Lydia , even Mr Collins depicted as Mohan , Mr and Mrs Bennet ...every character and casting has been well thought of by the director. It is our misfortune that we have such a masterpiece with us and it is not considered a classic like the bbc one. Many people did not even know this existed till DD uploaded in KZbin. Only the 80s audience knew

I agree with you. Such a beautiful adaptation of the novel. Each actor did full justice to their role. When I used to read the novel I always imagined Darcy as Tarun Dhanrajgir. Oh the smile. Just what is described in the novel....

Loved the serial.i was too young to appreciate it when I had seen it on DD when it had aired in 1985/86. All the characters have done Justice to their roles . special mention to Sangeeta handa and her mom and dad. ( Pardon me for not knowing actor's names) Sangeeta handa and Tarun danrajgir's chemistry is undeniable .I miss good old DD days where seriels had good substance and good execution.I have seen so many versions of pride and prejudice incl Gurinder Chadda s movie and several Hollywood and english movies based on the novel but by far Trishna is the best adaptation .sadthat today's generation don't get to see such well made series . Atleast there is KZbin for us to view them . Gem of a series . absolutely loved it

OMG... I am SO HAPPY to see this... I have searching for this show relentlessly... DVDS even VHS if possible. This is the best Indian rendition of Pride and prejudice that is true to the book. The only one that I find a little better is the BBC adaptation from the 90s starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I wish they upload all episodes. As a gay teenager growing up in India did I have a crush on Tarun Dhanrajgir!!!! LOL

This show was a rage back then. How we loved it! And we had a chapter from Pride and Prejudice in our English syllabus too. I was in Class 10 when this show was aired. Bachpan main dekhti thi,,,,,,kabse dhoondh rahi thi,main 5 ysars ki thi tab yeh show aata tha,shaayad after Dada Dadi ki Kahaniyan ☺️☺️ l am very happy ki yeh show mujhe wapis dekhne ko mil raha hai......Bade hokar jab Pride and Prejudice padha toh aankhon ke aage isi show ke kirdar dikhayee diye☺️☺️
