I use 3 wheel skates, because they looked cool and professional. I have been skating for 11 years now which is the main reason why I switched, I wanted to try something new. What I love is that you don’t easily trip over small rocks or sticks that are on the road. It is definitely harder to keep your balance at first, but it’s something you need to get used to.

I came from ice hockey skates. My first reaction to 4 wheel inline skating is that I felt like I was on rails...Switched to 3 wheels (3x90), much closer to ice especially once you develop a rocker. I can switch from ice/roller no problem. Love it.

Another potential disadvantage which I don't think was mentioned is slower and tougher starts and stops. If you have strong legs and good technique this may be trivial but for a beginner, it can be a problem.

you mean the acceleration,. it's true if using big big wheels...but that can be reduced by having a shorter wheelbase. as an example the Powerslide urban team skater Sam Crofts, loves to skate 3x100 to be able to move and stop really quick:)

Switched from 4x90 to 3x125 recently... Next megacrusers are not as sweet as I expected (mainly boot issues) but manouverability of the short frame is just great. If I want to stop, i go for powerstop which is much easier (the middle pivot) now even though I skated the 4x90 for almost 10 years. After a month even did some micro-slides. Most of all now I'd love to try UFS ground control frames 3x125 with my old boots (RB fusion, pity these are not made any more), they are just sooo supportive and comfy...

Pol Pot I'm 176 cm tall, size of the nexts is 44-45 if they were 43-44, it might have been better for me. Wheel size-wise I don't feel bad or insecure standing on 3x125 from the first time. Funny thing is that the 125 wheels are a bit bit more resistant to changes of velocity. Meaning that to start moving (or speed up) you have to push a little harder, but when they actually start spinning, the speed you get for the same effort compared to 4x90 (new bearings) is quite higher. Longer trips at speed call for some anticipation - reaching uphill means you need to stride more in advance. Otherwise it gets tough to regain the speed after skates start to slow down. The ability of 125 to cross uneven surface is great (like

I love both versions honestly, just depends on what you want to do and what your priority is. A shorter wheelbase is more unstable but you have more agility. You need a better boot, but that is not a disadvantage at all because a more stable boot will help you make better movements. If you are taller on your wheels you also learn to balance better. For me, the 3x 110 free skates with a short wheel base are perfect because they have the agility of roller skates and the speed of inline skates.

My first real skates were Rollerblade around 1999 or 2000 and they were probably some of the first 3 wheel skates. They had regular sized wheels and the style came as 4 wheels as well, but that's what I learned with. People were always surprised when they noticed only 3 wheels. I finally when looking for new skates last summer for the first time in like 15 years and seeing that 3 wheel skates are actually a thing was so cool! Especially with larger wheels! There's so much more to skating now. I really hope to get some off road skates sometime so I can live out my old dreams and imagination of doing grabs and spins going down mountain trails I hike. Haha :)

How many of these disadvantages are the result of being used to 4 wheels when transitioning to 3? Do you think it would be easier to learn on 3 then to first learn on 4 or is there any advantage to doing that if your ultimate goal is urban street skating? I'm a quad skater wanting to transition to blades so I can skate in rougher areas. I want whatever is best for the typical cracks and debris in urban areas.

I've started skating in 2020 during the pandemic. I was 40 years old. My first Inline Skates is the Rollerblade Cruiser 4x80. Then this year, I've bought a Powerslide Zoom Pro 3x100. I loved the triskates stuff, the 3x100 is very very comfortable. But it is slower than the 4x80 cruiser. I believe the Hurricane wheels are the problem. I'm going for my third triskates this year, a rollerblade Cruiser 3x110. I'll let you know. So far I have no problems with the transition from 4 to 4 wheels.

Hard to say, I've been using Rollerblade Twisters for almost 15 years, I put 4x80mm wheels and bones 6 ball bearings and speed cream a few years ago and these things fly. So when I got the Powerglide Phuzion 110 last week with ABEC 9 bearings with grease I was a bit disappointed as I was hoping for a faster skating experience than my old ones. So I cleaned the bearings and put the same speed cream in there and now they're about the same. Whatever grease they're putting in those bearings is too thick.

Renato, forget 3x110, (you probably already have), 3x125 for long distance. Try running a ~320mm Magnesium (very important) 3 point mount trinity frame with 3x125. But be careful, they are much faster than 3x110. (I made the mistake of listening to people who said really 4x110 in not much different than 3x125....). Minor mistake, the speed got away from me a couple of times on my first skate at 125mm. Really hilly ? may opt for 3x110 at 320mm mag just because safer. But for slightly hilly open roads. :) :) :) :) 125mm ! everytime.

Now I alternately use the 4*80 rockered to make figures like figure skating on ice. And alternately use the 3*110 for speed and as a good taining and to make some distance . So they both have their pros and cons It is all about what you want to do with the type of scate.The stops with the three scate can be a problem for the beginner.

@@edixasanchezpacheco3692 I think what he is saying is, if streets were smooth, he would keep using his full rockered slalom skates (using smaller wheels at the front and back and 2 bigger ones in the middle) which offers more manoeuvrability, but since it's not the case(street are not smooth), he switched to triskates I guess, because bigger wheels help with non-smooth surfaces. Actually it doesn't matter too much which brand you take as long as it is a well known one and has a comfortable boot - with a little more space than you need. The main point is to get skating and have fun. I started way back in the 1990's with heavy old plastic boots - I even raced a marathon in them, since then I've owned about four sets of skates (they last a long time) and I must have done about 5000 km so far. You should just start skating and soon enough you'll figure out what your second set of skates should be like. Good luck.

pretty much just now starting out on a 3x125 setup and while i was looking around i saw that people dont usually recommend 3x110 to beginners, and i never even heard mention of a 3x125, which discouraged me, but watching this video i realized that most of the issues don't apply to me, and the only thing i'll have a problem with is balance, but at the same time starting out on skates that are notoriously hard to balance on will give me an advantage if i swap to more stable skates in the future

With a 3-wheel versus 4-wheel setup, it's not actually obvious which will wear down faster. The wheels are usually much larger in 3WD - the perimeter of 80mm is only half that of the perimeter of 110mm wheels. So while each 3WD wheel is taking more bodyweight, there is much more wheel material to be worn down. I would bet a 3WD setup would last longer, all else being equal.

5X84mm is life. :D I agree, of the common available setups, there is no better or worse, just different setups for different styles. I've skated 4x80, 5x80, 5x84, 5x90, 4x90, 4x90 with 84mm wheels, 3x125 SUV offroad. 5x80 is sort of useless, but the rest have their purpose, just as 3x100/110/125/150 SUV do.

Used to skate aggressive inline myself (Salomon St80 with anti rocker wheels) back about 17 years ago. Decided to get back into just casual skating. So i've picked up Swell 3x110. First time i've been on skates in 17 years. Didn't notice any stability issues, other than my own balance that is. Definitely glide over rougher roads easier than my old 58mm wheels that's for sure. 1 thing I would say is they are fast! Even a small downhill they build up so much speed so it's definitely a learning curve keeping the speed down.

@GullibleTarget
@GullibleTarget 3 жыл бұрын
It's been a while. But the point is 'feeling'. The more you skate, the more your body will get accustomed to movement. If you start out on a tri skate, you will not know what a 4skate will feel like. It will probably take more time to learn how to stabilize on three wheels than four. However, once you do get comfortable with them, it will be easier to upgrade to bigger wheels as you get better and better. And these days; everything seems to be about tri-skates. It all depends on what kind of a skater you want to be. If you get addicted to it like I got; start with low tri-skates. If you're going to be a casual, once in a week-type of skater; start with 4 wheels on 74 or 80s. I started on 4 wheels and went all the way up to 100 and it's my main mode of transport!but it seems that I have to upgrade to tri skates on 125mm to maintain the same speed. It will be a huge transition because I have always skated on four wheels. Seeing that tri-skates are here to stay: it would maybe be wise to just learn to skate on them from the beginning.

I have 3x110 metropolis supercruiser, those are so good, I was aggressive skater so I can do some locks on miniramp rail between heel wheels easily, my feet is damn wide and its size 46-47, at first I was coming from 4x80 and was a bit disapointed, maybe it was the boot that I was adopting, caused much flex because my legs are very thin so ankle got much stress.. but the issue was the bearings, they needed some extra lubrication.. Now it rolls longer and stable no extra moves no flex points.. The frame is 255mm and wheel is much bigger it feels different in skate park, but my long feet controls them easily, now I wonder why wizard frame is recommended on your feet size, One day I will buy them 4x110mm... Overall triskates are amazing, the right boot is most important factor here, but I hate powerslide softboots on triskate frames, I think its really dangerous for beginners, its tend to flex a lot more. Pricier boot doesnt mean better boot for your feet shape :)

And I immediately thought while trying the triskates for the first time that I wish I had purchased four wheels instead.. But I also love the speed I get. Its gotta be way faster than four wheels. It just seems four wheels are much more practical. Going down a steep slope on the tall triskates take my breath, its terrifying. I completely agree with the stair issues. But i don't want to sacrifice the speed i can generate. So should I go up to 3×110? 125 seems a bit too dangerous for the city? Anyone with experience on 4×100 who made the transition?

I had a low-set frame with 3x100 + 1x90. The 90mm was set as the second wheel which is the lowest point of the boot. With this set up you have a relatively low ride for a speed skate. I used these instead of my normal 4x110 mainly because these are a bit too long to be manoeuvrable and cross overs are a bit dodgy. Anyway I got pretty good on the low-set frames and could do backwards cross overs too. Today though I bought another skate. This time with 3x125mm and a race boot. That is one that has hardly any ankle support. BUT I made sure that the frame I choose made my wheel base exactly the same length as my low-set skates. The frame for my 3x125mm skates are 11.5 inches. I have just come back from a 40 km skate in them. I have absolutely no problem at all and no break in time. They are faster and I can accelerate faster too. The important point to note here though is that slightly shorter frames DO NOT make them unstable at high speeds. I guess I can hit about 45 km/h on the flat - no wobble at all. Those ultra-long race frames are totally not necessary. My frame is not ultra-short though: I still have a 2cm gap between the wheels. I've played ice hockey for years so perhaps I've built up some stability. One last point. If you want to make turn in the 3x125mm skates by leaning your body and angling the skates you have to be more accurate with the angle otherwise you put too much pressure on your ankles or knees. If you get the angle right, there is no problem. So make sure you are an accurate skater in terms of foot placement before you make the transition. I hope that helps. Good luck!

Been using fitness soft boot inline skates K2 4x80mm frame 260mm for recreation for a couple of years. Recently I've bought brand new FR3 3x110mm frame 232mm. Getting used to them. I've found main differences: far better rolling on different surfaces on 3x110mm and that's the reason why I bought them. After fitness skates I find FR extremely stiff, maybe because they're still new, hope they'll become more flexible with time, now I'm getting used to it) Then on new 232mm frame I pay more attention to my stance, a little bit leaning forward, otherwise it's quite easy to fall on the back, on fitness skates I don't even remember to pay much attention to this. So in a nutshell I still have to learn to skate better on 3x110mm. But I'm very happy that I bought them and this is the size of the wheels I looked for.

Last week I tryed skating around town on sidewalks and cyclepaths crossing streets a lot with curbsides for the first time with my hockeyskates. The surface was uneven, rough, bumpy with debris, cobblestones and some edges and less place for maneuvers. This was a bad experience for me. Would different skates give me a more suitable setup for skating around in the town? If so, I have to decide between a Rollerblade Fusion84 (4x84mm, 255mm frame) or a 3x110mm hardboot setup ( for example Next110 with a 143mm frame). Which setup is better for bad surfaces? @@GullibleTarget I just changed today from a 4 wheels set up (3x100 + 1x90) which is lower and slightly shorted than my previous set up of 4x110 (I broke the frame, so had to change) to a 3x125mm set up with a racing boot with hardly any ankle support. I go on a totally flat route along a canal on a smooth path for about 40 km. I've done this many many times. With the 3x100 + 1x90 I can keep up with a average guy peddling hard on a mountain bike. With the 4x110m I can keep up with a fit guy peddling hard on a mountain bike. With the 3x125 mm I can keep up with an average guy peddling hard on a very good racing bike and I can accelerate much faster because my legs are effectively longer so that I have a greater stroke length. I still cannot catch the fit guys on racing bikes, but if I catch up to an average guy they cannot shake me off because I can simply tuck into their slip stream. Fit guys on racing bike can still get away from me. So I see a definite different between the wheels sizes - I must add though that I got a slightly harder wheel for the 125 mm which might make a bit of a difference. An interesting fact that you might not be aware of. A women named Annie Lambrecht (Belgian) still holds the world record for inline skating for 20 km, 30 km, and 50 km with an average speed of around 40 km/h all the way. She also did a marathon in about 1 hour and 9 minutes during her 50 km record run. The amazing thing about this is that the record was set in 1985. Yes 36 years ago. 4X80 with Trinity mount is the clear winner for me. I also skate 3 X 110 and 3 x 90 but none beat the 4 x 80! 4x80 Trinity is more agile, more maneuvrable, can give you that "barefoot" feeling like none. For marathons my option would be that 3 x 125, for hill bombing 5 x 90.

Thanks. Which model do you recommend for the 4x80 trinity?

I just got my 3×110 thinking it would be more comfortable riding on the streets of México where the asphalt is all worn out or you find lots of cobbled roads. I gotta say that so far i'm dissapointed. I can tell that the roads actually feel more bumpy on the 3x110. I was thinking it has to do witt the fact that theres more space between the wheels. On the other hand, I don't know if i just have to get used to it (definitely you use different muscles than when you ride on 4 wheels) or probably I need some different wheels ( i have RB hydrogene on my 4 wheels and my 3x110 are some powerslide wheels that say ground control). Any advice to get the best out of my 3x100 set up?

If your triskates are bumpy I would 100% put the responsibility into your wheels and your boots... A thick liner for example takes away a lot of the bumpyness

Question for you, I recently switched to 3x110, I put a powerslide pleasure tool v2 frame on a pair of Seba Fr deluxe. There’s a bigger gap between the first wheel and the 2 back wheels; what’s the advantage/disadvantage compared to an equal gap between all 3 wheels ?

What about the wheel itself? I hear that 4wheel setups are usually harder(like hard plastic) compared to 3 wheels that are like rubber(?)

Ok Ricardo and EVERYONE, so me and my kids are gonna try in-line skating and we’re swapping from quads to unlines so what configuration of boots and wheels are we best to go for ?? Seba, Powerslide ,Rollerblade??? On and on your thoughts?? Btw it’s UK roads with pot holes, cracks stones and I would say we’re urban/fitness skaters.
