Murail is associated with the "spectral" technique of composition, which involves the use of the fundamental properties of sound as a basis for harmony, as well as the use of spectral analysis, FM, RM, and AM synthesis as a method of deriving polyphony.
Major pieces by Murail include large orchestral pieces such as Gondwana, Time and Again and, more recently, Serendib and L'esprit des dunes. Other pieces include his Désintégrations for 17 instruments and tape, Mémoire/Erosion for French horn and nine instruments Ethers for flute and ensemble, Winter Fragments, for flute, clarinet, piano, violin, cello and electronics as well as Vampyr! for electric guitar.
Murail also composed a set of solo pieces for various instruments in his cycle Random Access Memory, of which the sixth, Vampyr!, is a rare classical piece for electric guitar. Vampyr! is one of several works in Murail's catalogue that do not employ spectral techniques. Rather, in the performance notes, the composer asks the performer to play the piece in the manner of guitarists in the popular and rock traditions, such as Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton.
Among Murail's awards are the Prix de Rome (presented by the French Académie des beaux-arts in 1971), the Grand Prix du Disque (1990), and the Grand Prix du Président de la République, Académie Charles Cros (1992).
Murail's works are published by Éditions Transatlantiques and Éditions Henry Lemoine. His music has been recorded on the Una Corda, Metier, Adés, and MFA-Radio France labels.

Trisran Murail is ; with Gérard Grisey who passed away prematurely, a major if not the heir of the so-calles "xpectral" school. Although based upon strict physical sound analysis, the inventivity of the composr is not inhibited:; it can switch to other parameters tan usual, including the second Viennes e and the Darmstadt schools. Murail and Grisey left us many poetic scores if we accept to listend to nrw soundings. Their influence upon sucha composer than Kaija Saariaho is great.

The Inventors of the Spectral Music were inspired by Giacinto Scelsi and Gyorgy Ligeti, so they couldn't be wrong! I'm a big fan of Tristan Murail. And I enjoy too the music of his pupils, like Julian Anderson, Joshua Fineberg and so on..

Seeing the spectral visualisation together with hearing the piece (for the first time, in my case) really does add to the experience, actually - and not meant in some pseudo-psychedelic way. Interesting interplay between anticipation ("oh god, there's some wave coming!") and sonic surprises ("that sounds much more different than it looks!"). Higher resolution (and more colours) please! :)

Ignacio ... not for me... so this proves one thing : projection.... and subjectivity... anxiety is what you give, anxiety is what you get. I once stopped listening to any kind of music, I took like a year without any listening to music.... that showed to be very liberating.... then when I started listening again, this kind of musical experience made sense... freedom! that is not always easy to handle, hence anxiety....

Having the spectrograph set to linear mode is crazy, because I almost never see it, we're used to log10 based spectrographs but this is really interesting because a lot of the harmonics and and sounds are *equidistant* in wavelength. This doesn't sound equidistant, it usually sounds jarring (which is kinda true for this) but it certainly looks interesting.
@wazzpqazzza
@wazzpqazzza Жыл бұрын
I wonder if that's how a natural harmonic series just appears on a linear spectrograph and only appears to telescope on a log scale one because of the scale.

The spectrum of frequencies?
@robpiy91
@robpiy91 6 жыл бұрын
The spectrum of frequencies, yes. * a spectrum shows which frequencies are heard and "how much" they are heard. White means those frequencies (on the left in Hz) are being played rather loudly. As the human ear is most sensitive to frequencies around 2k-5k Hz, those are generally less white, as the ear perceives them as louder on a lesser intensity.
