Tristan und Isolde (Tristan and Isolde), WWV 90, is an opera in three acts by Richard Wagner to a German libretto by the composer, based largely on the 12th-century romance Tristan and Iseult by Gottfried von Strassburg. It was composed between 1857 and 1859 and premiered at the Königliches Hoftheater und Nationaltheater in Munich on 10 June 1865 with Hans von Bülow conducting. Wagner referred to the work not as an opera, but called it "eine Handlung" (literally a drama, a plot, or an action).
The score of Tristan und Isolde has often been cited as a landmark in the development of Western music.Throughout the opera, Wagner uses a remarkable range of orchestral colour, harmony, and polyphony, doing so with a freedom rarely found in his earlier operas. The first chord in the piece, the "Tristan Chord", is of great significance in the move away from traditional tonal harmony as it resolves to another dissonant chord.
Wagner's composition of Tristan und Isolde was inspired by the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer (particularly The World as Will and Representation), as well as by Wagner's affair with Mathilde Wesendonck. Widely acknowledged as a pinnacle of the operatic repertoire, Tristan was notable for Wagner's unprecedented use of chromaticism, tonal ambiguity, orchestral colour, and harmonic suspension.
Tristan is a milestone on the move away from common practice harmony and tonality and it lays the groundwork for the direction of all music genres in the 20th century. Both Wagner's libretto style and music were also profoundly influential on the symbolist poets of the late 19th century and early 20th century.

I assume that's Peter Hofmann singing the opening a capella (I know it lists him, but i don't know the opera well enough to be certain. Sounds like him, tho. Magnificent voice, superior musicality. I don't love Wagner, despite taking a course on him in college, but I can appreciate it when sung by someone like Hofmann. I just wish Bernstein played the overture more slowly...

The opening solo (acapella, off-stage) belongs to the "young sailor" and is sung in this performance by Thomas Moser, who in later years sung Tristan himself.

It si not an overture, it’s a prelude. Moreover, the only a cappella singing in the beginning is by the young sailor, so it can’t be Hoffmann. It’s Thomas Moser.

No, the opening a capella voice is Thomas Moser, the young sailor (=Stimme eines jungen Seemanns), who himself would become a great Tristan, but 20 years later, at the Vienna State Opera.

Bernstein's tempo is exceptionally slow as it is.

Why is Bernstein conducting most the opera like a funeral march? It's so slow that the whole thing kind of lacks any sort of momentum or tension. The end of Act 1 is ruined becuase of this. He also doesn't distinguish the different contrasting sections here enough and the impact just kind of falls flat. Is the famous recording that was released on 5 CDs because he conducted it so slowly?
