I read several books for Victober, but I especially enjoyed The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins and Ruth by Elizabeth Gaskell. I read North and South this past summer and fell in love with her writing.

@@tristanandtheclassics6538 No, but I picked up a copy and plan to read it soon. I'm starting The Pickwick Papers this month, though, so I plan on Woman in White sometimes this winter. Have you read The October Country by Ray Bradbury? I just finished that collection of short stories and thought it was fabulous! Not Victorian, 😂but great autumnal read.

Jane Eyre and North and South are two of my favourite books. I've been meaning to read Kim for ages, and your description has me even more interested.

It's nice to hear your thoughts on two of my favourite classics, Jane Eyre and North and South. It is interesting your insight on the theme of doubt in North and South, I haven't noticed this important part in the novel, time for a reread. I have never heard of Kim, it sounds interesting I will look for it. I have never read Anthony Trollope definitely it will be my priority for next year, God willing. Kim is magnificent. Trollope is an artist. As for the other two, the deserve their fame.

I read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Lady Audley's Secret, Dracula, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Gothic Tales by Elizabeth Gaskell

I'm not sure how, but I totally had not heard of Victober until this very moment. I read Jane Eyre when I was too young to enjoy it, I think, and after the same thing happened with Wuthering Heights, at age 19, I swore myself off the Brontes forever. But next year I am determined to give them another go. And North and South is on my TBR, I did not know the link with Charlotte Bronte, and this idea of theological conflict and social prejudice (explained so well by yourself) has me very excited to begin!

So maybe I shouldn’t make my daughter read the Brontë’s? Lol I love them and don’t want her to hate them. I also appreciated books more as I got older. North and South is a good one, hope you enjoy it when you do read it.

Oh Captain, you started with my favorite! Thank you. Honestly, Jane Eyre is the one book I dip into often. Great books for October. I feel like I remember someone on Instagram doing a Victober once but not quite sure. Love to take part next time. My reading has been slow this year but a little more purposeful. I’ve also been reading lots of children’s books. In fact, the kiddos and I are reading Treasure Island for the first time and we are enjoying it so much. Take care friend. God bless your family.

Hey mandy! Sorry for delay, I've been snowed under and unwell too. So eased that your kids loved treasure Island. In my opinion it's one of the best books of all time. Have they ever read Moonfleet? Also very exciting with a touch of pathos.

I read the Tenant of Wildfell Hall, which was excellent, and I have a couple other Bronte novels. After your review I am leaning toward Jane Eyre as my next one.

The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is probably my favourite. Though Jane Eyre is more vivid. A really good story.

Had already read & loved both Jane Eyre & North & South. Really appreciated your interpretation of Kim as I had always just waved it off as a maybe read. But I genuinely look forward to reading it now. Same feeling about The Warden. Thanks for the great interpretation!

Of those four, I've only read Jane Eyre -- love me some Jane Eyre. Just curious: have you ever read Wide Sargasso Sea? I only remember that I thought it seemed overly pleased with itself, but I know many people think it's a necessary companion to Jane. It's short! :-)

I like that cover of Jane Eyre, but she does not look plain. Maybe she was not really plain, but more like Victoria herself, just not rock star gorgeous like Prince Albert (saw their Winterhalter portraits in an exhibit a few years ago). I enjoyed Wives and Daughters by Gaskell for Victober and I thought it ended just fine without needing to be completed by another author. I read North and South long ago, thanks for the review. Kim was one of my favorite reads in school, not hard going homework. I am also slowly reading Clarissa (I think it is a reread because it seems so familiar), I bet your students would have a good time with the word epistolary. I have The Warden in the tbr.

You are Sooo observant! The plainness of Jane totally escaped my notice with the book cover. Clarissa is only a book I faintly recollect. I hope to spend an upcoming month on 18th century fiction. Richardson, Defoe, fielding, Burney etc

I've been really enjoying Great Expectations this October when Nursing School hasn't been too much! It is my first time really dipping my toes into Dickens (though I did read A Tale of Two Cities and A Christmas Carol in grade school), and though I am still trying to get used to Dickens's style of making characters a little extreme to illustrate his points, I've found that Pip as a character really resonates with me. I haven't yet had the pleasure to read any of the books mentioned here, but they sound wonderful!

Pip is a brilliant character. I love how funny he is with his childish observations. Great Expectations is just a miracle of imaginative writing. Jaggers is my favourite character. The description of his office the first time Pip visits is such a masterpiece of tone, making Jaggers almost equal to Death and Fate.

I read Mary Barton by E. Gaskell. It was excellent. I am currently reading Middlemarch by G. Eliot and enjoying it very much. I will be reading your recommendations of North and South and Kim. I loved Jane Eyre,; having read it some yrs. ago.
