@ I think an interesting idea that many Dagestani fighters seem to have exploited is their cage wrestling system. With the upper body grappling they look for takedowns and sweeps, and they also have leg tackles of course. And then finally I think their use of the leg riding and hand cuffing is amazing. They just keep dagestani handcuffing and re running the system if the opponent escapes. Before them I can’t think of fighters who truly specialised to the extent they did in this cage wrestling system. Khamzat and khabib are of course masters of this. On the topic of specialising in areas of martial arts based on your physical gifts / temperament, I’ve always been fascinated by Sean Strickland style. He’s not particularly athletic or got a good chin. But it seems that he’s mastered the simple style of just patiently pressuring his opponent. He just uses straight punches and a teep largley (low energy low risk techniques) and just grinds on his opponent. On top of that his hybrid Philly shell defence, similar to say a Dustin Poirier, is very hard to penetrate so opponents often tire themselves out going for knockouts whilst he just wears them down slowly

very wise insights in terms of specialising in accessible positions. we only have so much time so it makes sense to specialise and learn complimentary skills to lead to that position. i really appreciate these types of conceptual videos, they feel so useful because i feel like committed learners can get a huge amount of direction and long-term improvement

Thanks! You raise very good points, I think you are spot on. I was specially surprised - and positively at that - by your comment about Wing Chun, a martial art that is widely discredited these days. But then it is logical to assume that every martial art is, or at least was, an effective combat system because after all, that's the reason why they were created in the first place. I hope I get the opportunity to train in your gym some day. Salutations from Spain, and Happy New Year!

@hyk14n you joke but if it was in the UFC and I could make the weight I probably would have considered it lol. I think my lowest healthy BMI walk around weight would be 145 , I figure a 20 pound cut from there and I could be 125. For flyweight I think the divisions shallow , and I'd have a big height and reach advantage, for heavyweight , I think it's the least skilled division and the least athletic , I'm also not that athletic think Ryan hall , so I'd probably mainly grapple for whatever division I decided on .

TJ Dillashaw’s footwork that lead to his striking combinations and grappling is an enigma that I’m still trying to figure out, though I’ve only been training MMA for a little under 2 years and training with intentions of fighting for less than a year

Ive always loved Dominic’s footwork. One of the greatest innovations of fighting sports. I’m surprised more people haven’t emulated it. I guess it’s similar to Tyson’s peekaboo. There just aren’t that many talents willing to explore the unorthodox.

@ the multiple championships belts that Dominick has at home compared to the zero belts Chito has won. You seem a bit dense so maybe you lost the argument being levied but it was a question about fighters with unique styles that are tremendously effective yet for some reason are slow to be incorporated into the new fight game meta. You’re welcome… helping people is what I do.

@@darrenstettner5381 you're the slow one, Dominick has those accomplishments from a bygone era in MMA ( when most of its competitors weren't nearly as well rounded/ polished as the "journey men" of this era). Dominick Cruz has all those belts/accolades YET he got FINISHED by the dude that can't even hold and touch the belt, so imagine how he would fare against those whom actually are operating at that level in the current MMA meta.

@ Now that he’s a relatively old dog in the sport the age will be a disadvantage. Especially because his footwork is so physically demanding, he’s dealt with multiple leg injuries that, in addition to age, has obviously slowed him down and made him an easier target. There may also be some truth to what you said about the fighters of this new younger era. Obviously, the sport has been evolving rapidly over the decades. All that said, Dominic’s footwork is something special that made him a prodigy of innovation and the entire arena of combat sports. If you can’t see that. You’re just lying cause the dude had his way with your imaginary girlfriend.

Kajan what are your thoughts on pad work? There seems to be a growing sentiment against it and an overall trend towards more light contact, situational sparring. (I believe they call it the ecological approach.)
@user-he4ef9br7z
@user-he4ef9br7z 20 күн бұрын
Padwork is light contact though, you don't hit pads full force. Helps build speed, cardio and learn combos. But you have to drill, spar way more to actually register those combos. As for sparring I'd say both are important. Just my two cents.

can’t speak for his opinions but i go to his gym and a lot of our striking drilling is padwork so i doubt he hates it
@coachkajan
@coachkajan 20 күн бұрын
I think that pad work is the best way to build the proper mechanics and understanding of the striking system. Once, the mechanics are there and the system has been built, live work or semi live work will teach the fighter how to make the right decisions in the moment. BOTH are definitely important. If someone only does live work, their mechanics will likely suffer. If they only do pads, they won’t be able to implement in real situations.

Does training 2x a day account for strength and conditioning sessions, or are those just martial arts sessions and you add in S and C on top of that for a 3 a day?

I hear you bro. This is one of the hardest things to master. It takes a lot of confidence to stay home and rest. Even more so if you have a fight looming just around the corner. I think it would help to study the science behind this to encourage your brain to let go and do what your body needs. Also, you can always tape study during this time so that you’re still productive.

To all the idiots in the comment sections saying one style is better then others. You all don't know squat... the best style is a combination of a few in one person and then that one person must know how to adapt n the fight. Sooo the fighter that adapts the fastest has the best style at that given time.
