The new Triumph 400 Scrambler. At last, a chance to ride the baby Triumphs. At just £5,495 I wasn’t expecting much and was very impressed with both the build quality and ride. This Triumph Scrambler 400 is perfect for us tall riders that want a smaller capacity bike. It has a real turn of speed, even if it is a bit revy and easily breaches the 90mph (I imagine). It’s light and nimble, blasts down the back roads and doesn’t get blown about on the dual carriage way. A fantastic bike I really enjoyed riding.

Oh I say 🧐... Marvellous review old bean! On a side note I reckon the short 1st & 2nd gearing is because its a scrambler and you'll need that shorter gearing while plugging through the mud outside the coffee shops of South London and Ipswich.. What What! 😉

I think people thought this was going to be a miniature Triumph - but it isn't! It is a full sized bike with a cc that is comparable to many other bikes. The power is adequate and the styling is very good. I saw it at the unveiling in Denver and it is very nice. I would put this up against any other bike in the segment. Thanks for making this video and giving us all a riding experience! 👍

It sounds not like a 125 but like 250 short stroke to me. The rumor in the cone network is that the bike with aftermarket wind screen, fender extender and some luggage is perfect for touring UK and Ireland .. Specially good for the Scottish highlands and Suffolk winters .. I beginning to suspect that mr. TAYM has deep connections not only in the cone network and giraffe mafia but in a few bike dealers as well.. Marvelous, mr. TAYM

Unpopular opinion - i like how these small 400 make you feel you are going fast while simultaneously not in extremely dangerous speeds 😂. I like the forgiveness that comes with these bikes . Rampart acceleration gets old preety fast.

Being of average size I took a Speed 400 out this week. Marvelous. Fits me like a glove....great ride quality and seems to do everything really well. Fantastic value. Another enjoyable video. I really appreciate your test ride views along with your informative comments. Im about the same height as you and always appreciate your comments regarding comfort and riding position. Obviously we need to test ride bikes ourselves if we were looking at making a purchase, however I would say this Triumph is a very nice bike. I'm looking forward to seeing them in our NZ showrooms early this year. Thanks for sharing.

My '62 pre unit 650 will not rev to ten grand but it will pull into the outside lane in 4th and accelerate from 70 to 85/90 with no problem when overtaking. I remember riding south on the M1 and a fellow rider on a CB400/4 telling me after we arrived that he had to change down and give it some throttle to keep up. More cubes big flywheel etc. The 400/4 was/is a cracking little bike and if Triumph have managed to produce the same power to weight ratio on a seemingly similar size bike then hopefully more people will enjoy the freedom of two wheels.

I like it! This would be just right as a lightweight do it all bike for me. The engine size is in that sweet size for a smaller bike. I had a Kawasaki KLX 300 and thought it was about 100cc short of being adequate for my area. I replaced it with the Husqvarna FE 501 S, and the power to weight ratio is awesome. But it’s a MX race bike made into a road legal dual-sport. The 400 Scrambler and the upcoming 450 Himalayan will be much more practical for what I want out of a lightweight do it all bike. Looks & Sounds Wonderful as well. 👍

@@TAYM the Triumph accessories I like are the small windscreen, center tank pad, luggage rack, and the high mud guard. Not sure if upgraded seat is worth the expense, but it does look sharp. I want both the upper and lower engine bars. Still not sure if the upper one comes with the bike. The reviews from India say that it does. I still can’t get a straight answer on that. I also like the bullet style turn lights. Again not sure it’s worth the add on price. Luggage has been a big thought and I believe the Mosko Moto Reckless 80 will solve all my needs with a Triumph specific Cruz Tools kit in the Fatty Tool Roll. For Navigation I will be using the REVER App with my IPhone on a Quad lock mount.

I like it. Bit too tall for me and Diddy Dave. I could just get the "Speed 400" instead but these look much nicer. It's a different kind of motorcycling than the Classic 350. You'll be playing with an entirely different rev band. I'll bet it'll be very similar experience to the CB300R I had a few year's ago. For this reason, it'll not work for me as I love short-shifting the J-series plodder. My time with revvy bikes has passed. But for everyone else, isn't it great that there's so much choice for us in the lower capacity market these days ?😊 Edit: You briefly found the "600 mpg" mode. Leave it in that mode, then there'll be no need for those awful EV bikes that they will insist on forcing down our fat necks 👍

What an absolute little beauty, I think Triumph are on to a winner with this one. I reckon you're spot on TAYM it is going to be popular with da yoof lol it doesn't look like an old man's bike. It is close enough in performance to the small KTMs that it gives a viable alternative. Obviously it is built to a price so you can see in a few areas that things are not quite at the quality level you'd get on a Bonneville or 1200 Scrambler but it all looks perfectly acceptable. I can see this making a great winter bike for many folks. Nathan The Postman has just bought one and already taken it green laning and seems quite impressed with it.

Triumph have a winner on there hands 400cc with 40bhp, sorry RE you really need to find some more power in the 350's or I guess they will have to use the new 450 Himalayan engine in some of their road bikes, maybe a Hunter 450 would be good competition to the Triumph 400 speed. Hopefully RE are already looking to make it.

I fancy a test ride just to try one , but I'll be keeping my Classic 350 and just fit some K60 scout tyres for my mucky lanes riding, aka Coastrider , he's shown how good the bike and those tyre's are . What a splendiferous review of the 400X just as it's about to break into the market. As you're aware I put in a very early note of interest in this bike in this exact colour. I expressed to the dealer to transfer a deposit I'd had on an Africa twin ( which they sold as I waited to make a final decision ). For us shorty's the seat height seems a strange decision bearing in mind Triumph have seen the light and just brought out the lower 1200 X Scrambler model ... It means the only 400 Scrambler model on offer has a much taller seat than both the 900 and 1200 range has available. It sort of pitches the 400 as a "serious" off-road bike but without the usual components such as spoked wheels ? I think the way Honda offer a taller seat option on the CL500 is a much better way to cater for taller people on a bike that will mostly be used on roads. Great review TAYM as always ..I hope to get out again myself once my health is back on track👍

Nice looking little bike, always think headlight protectors are a bit gimmicky. If I was going off road I might consider one but that would be all. I’ve been biking over 40 years and never had a broken headlight or even a damaged headlight. People often say especially with higher end bikes the cost of a new headlight can be really high, I get that, however at one time I had a high end Mercedes and think the headlights that were much lower to the ground so more in the stone damage danger zone cost around £2k to £3k to replace, never crossed my mind to put some kind of protection on them.

@@TAYM ...it's interesting, Triumph have taken design cues from the BSA Rocket 3 on the tank of the new Trident 660 and, honestly, the silencers and r/h side panel of the Triumph 400 Scrambler remind me of the Triumph Hurricane. I am afraid that I'm old enough to have owned and ridden one of the last Triumph Trident T160 Triple 750's to have come out of the factory. So, I am very familiar with the TRIUMPH and BSA Triples of that era. ( By the way, my Trident T160 was very well run-in and ran as smooth as silk on a long run, the handling was beautifully old school via Girling shock absorbers and Dunlop TT100's ).

Thanks Mr TAYM, perhaps the video is deceptive but that seems very quick for a 400cc bike. Definitely has the Triumph look and I can't understand why they didn't call it a Cub, maybe there'll be a retro Cub version later. Very tempting but is it worth nearly £2k more than a Hunter? I'll have to ride both to find out. Cheers, Mick

Like this one TAYM it's a very good looking bike I note they seem to have taken note of the CCM tank putting what looks like dents to allow the forks to turn, but what is that cable running along the swinging arm by the brake pipe ?.The silencer looks really nice in comparison to most these days TAYM but I note you say about the throttle being a bit lurchy I am surprised Triumph haven't sorted that out since it seems to be a bit of a thing with them .On the whole though perty damned good 👌👍

Dear TAYM, I’m downsizing and like both the ninja 400 and this scrambler x. Both very different bikes but I wonder which would be a better single bike to live with year round in the UK? I think the Ninja has a better all round engine but this scrambler when I tried it was a lot of fun on small and rough roads. Just curious which you would choose between the two? Eventually I hope to have both, maybe one day 😊 Thanks for all your videos I do enjoy them. Happy Friday 😁

Both very good bikes but like you say, very different 😁 I loved the ninja when I tried it and would definitely have one. The Triumph is perhaps not so generic but it’s early days for it and then there are the triumph service costs and parts prices to consider🤔 I am not sure 🤔 if it was my only bike that I had to do everything on I might go the ninja route. But then again I do like the Triumph 🤔 sorry not much help 😂😂😂 thanks KT 😁

Hi Taym, interested in this because my first bike after my 2 stroke 250s was a cb360 twin then a cb550 4. I really loved the cb360 In lime green and first bike I took a pillion on was 39 bhp the same as this. Had the honda twin clocks and plenty of chrome which I liked. I remember thinking 40bhp is great with the weight of the bike. Went up to the 550 which was around 55bhp but 4 growl. I’d love. Ride on one of these but really think the clocks are woeful like RE and some Guzzis. All the TFT etc are nowhere near as good looking as say your bonneville and thruxton clocks. From your cockpit point of view they are just gorgeous. Still wouldn’t buy just yet give it some development time. I think these smaller cc bikes are brilliant. RE too slow for me but think the new himmy is very good looking

Possibly the reviewers in India are comparing its consumption with a classic 350? I reckon most motorcycles will seem thirsty in comparison. Agree once some of the Independent reviewers can get some time with one, the real figures will be revealed.
