I am currently thinking of buying either a new model or the old version. Motorrad Magazine has tested the old one two years ago and recently the new one and there was quite a difference in engine performance. The figures show that at 3000rpm the new model has about 15Nm less torque than the old model ! Max Torque: 114Nm at 3400rpm (old) vs 108Nm at 4300rpm (new) Max Power: 98hp at 6700rpm (old) vs 100hp at 7200rpm (new) Acceleration from 0-100km/h: 3,4sec (old) 3,7sec (new) Acceleration from 60-100km/h in 6th gear: 3,4 sec (old) 3,9sec (new) Fuel consumption on country lanes: 4,2l/100km (old) 4,6l/100km (new) Quieter exhaust on the new one: 93dB vs 96dB for the old one at idle However, chassis- and brake-wise the new model scored more points than the old one. Difficult decision.
@RocketMan_Moto3 жыл бұрын
I agree and you can feel the difference in mid-range torque. However, imo the better brakes and suspension more than compensate for this, and you will find the new model easier to sell than the first generation :)

Great video. Best of luck with the new ride!👍🏻 I went to a Triumph demo last weekend. Rode the Trident first. Super fun and handled well but felt like I needed more power. Then tested your new bike. Came back grinning ear to ear. Handles like a dream, plenty of power (as you mention), and looks beautiful. Lastly, I did demo the new Speed Triple RS but felt like it was WAY more power than I could possibly need on the road. Sounds LOVELY. But would certainly taunt me to do naughty things lol. I do believe a new Speed Twin will be in my garage this spring. 😎 Looking forward to seeing your next update on your new steed. Cheers!

Thank you! I had a Street Triple RS about 4 years ago, but sold it because I was tired of riding everywhere at 200mph. It was also very peaky and needed its neck wringing to extract the power. A great review of a lovely bike but I think it’s most unfair that you have to fit a throttle spacer kit to alleviate the “jerkiness” of the fuelling system. What was wrong with the old style throttle cable ? at least that could be adjusted easily in order to alleviate any excess play. I hope you enjoy your new bike and look forward to further updates.

Never ridden the Speed Twin myself but I really like its modern retro looks and I'm sure I'd appreciate the character of its engine being a bit of a twin cylinder fan in all its guises. One other bike I would say is a direct competitor is the BMW R9T. I really enjoyed test riding that with a grin from ear to ear the whole time. I still keep looking at them on the used market as they're really just a bike you ride for the fun of riding and only useful as a second bike. Love to know if you considered one and how it might compare to the Speed Twin.

RocketMan, I have been waiting for a review on the 2022 SpeedTwin, Thanks for your great job and explanation. I had my deposit on the new 2022 SpeedTwin for the very reasons you did, the inverted front forks, radial mounted Brembo front brakes etc. However I still think that it needs adjustments front and back for the suspension and at least a simple cruise control like the SpeedMaster. I found a low mileage, (1,235 miles) 2019 SpeedTwin for a considerable savings over the new 2021 price. I installed a power plug and an X-Pipe, I can't say for certain but I think it is now making 100+ HP. I also put the classic faces on the speedo & Tach. This is a fourth bike for me, I find it brings out the hooligan in me more than any other of my bikes. Trophy SE, BMW R1150RT, and a 1966 Classic Bonneville. It is defiantly a hoot to ride. Be interested to see how you get on with your SpeedTwin. Cheers!

Hi man, I'm trying to decide if the Speed Twin that I ordered recently (not picked up yet) was the correct decision (decided against the more comfortable and laid back T120 because the ST seemed more fun and to have a higher grin factor because of the crazy torque). Kinda doubting that decision right now after what you said at 5:36, that the availability of torque doesn't seem any different to the T120 that you rode before getting the ST, although the ST is definitely faster. Does that mean that high power engine of the ST basically feels the same as the T120's unless you go on the highway and get to higher speeds with it (which isn't really that enjoyable on especially a naked bike anyway)? I know you love the ST, but I'm curious if I misunderstood this point? Thanks for reading and cheers :)
@RocketMan_Moto2 жыл бұрын
Imho, you made the right choice. Have you seen my review of the T120: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJayc4mOl5utjZo ? The Speed Twin is way, way more fun to ride and all you'd have to do to turn it into the T120 is twist the throttle a little less... except you won't because the ST is so enjoyable :) Yes, the T120's max. torque arrives earlier, but it's a fair bit down on the ST's. Many owners upgrade from the T100 or T120 to the Speed Twin, but I've never heard of anyone doing the reverse.

@@RocketMan_Moto Thanks a lot for the reply man! Really appreciate it! This makes me feel better about my choice. Can't wait to finally ride, I'm having my driving exam (not sure what it's called in English) on wednesday, if I pass I'll pick up the Speed Twin on saturday (perhaps leaving it in rain mode though for a start ha ha ha). Btw. very nice paint job on yours with the BMW black. I'll never understand what Triumph are thinking with designs in terms of color, borderline distasteful in some cases ha ha.

Agree with your thoughts about the first gen Speed twin. The Thruxton was certainly fitted with higher spec parts so that that would have been my choice at the time. I haven’t ridden either due to Covid so I must rectify that.

Thank you! Well, having ridden the identically priced (in Portugal) T120, I have to say that for me it is a no-brainer. The ST is nimbler (17" wheel) and a LOT faster than the T120, and imho it also looks nicer. The Bonnevilles are nice, and if there were a bigger price difference between the ST, then sure, think about it, but as things stand I can't think of a single reason to go for the 'standard' Bonnevilles :)

I have a 2019 Speed Twin and the throttle spacers helped smooth things out a bit. However, I still ran into issues with what seemed like poor fueling, especially when adding power at lower RPMs, or blipping throttle prior to downshifts. I ended up installing a booster plug and it totally transformed the bike. Overall opinion on booster plugs seems split, but it worked well for my application. Stuart Fillingham has a good video on the subject.

Thanks, Tim. I have heard that booster plug + spacers are the way to go, but I will need to wait for a Euro V version, I suppose😐

Lol, I was born in the same city as Stuart (Hull), but I left when I was 18 and have now completely lost the accent. The main problem I have with his videos is how long he takes to get to the point. He can make a 15-minute video about a brass nut :D

I'll join in and say congrats! Less than a month ago I bought the same bike in the same color here in the States. I'll be subscribing so I can follow along with you on your journey and see what kind of changes you do. I have the throttle spacers on order as well. Vance and Hines pipes are on my list. I've been told that with the new Euro5 regulations, the ECU is locked supposedly so we can't do any tunes or booster plugs for that choppy throttle (it annoys me more than I care to admit). Hopefully there's a way around that. Other than a few niggles, this is a fantastic bike! I'd recommend checking out Adam Croll's channel as well of course MissendenFlyer, they have a lot of mod content on the Speed Twin.

Good objective review. Like Andy (TMF), I own the original version and love it. The analogy of the motor being a V8 is spot on. The torque just puts a huge grin on my face every time I ride it. Who knew 96bhp could be so good? The only thing that puts me off the new one is the paint job on the tank. The original looks classier to my mind. I would have liked some more sophisticated shocks too !
@RocketMan_Moto3 жыл бұрын
I've already replaced the shocks with some YSS. I found I could flex the top cap on the stock shocks between my fingers, so they had to go. I agree about the paint schemes, I really liked the 'old' grey, but the new matte grey has grown on me and I even find myself (almost) liking the hi-vis yellow stripe :)
@vicprice16663 жыл бұрын
@@RocketMan_Moto a good move I would guess. With the limited range of movement on the swing arm I don't think it's necessary to go the whole hog with Ohlins. Just benefit from something a bit more sophisticated than the stock setup.

The Ducati throttle spacers help with the snatchy throttle just off idle, but don't eliminate it altogether, so I feather the clutch when necessary. Be interesting to try switching off the traction control as somebody suggested. If I'm in heavy traffic in town, I tend to switch to road mode, then change back to sport mode when things open up. P

Really a joy to look at, it must be thrilling to have all that torque on the twist of the whist and more importantly throughout the rev-range. I test rode this bike and was impressed. However, I preferred the mt09 engine. Overall, i think it is a great choice but wonder if a z900rs is a better choice. The speed twin engine likes to stay low in the revs and i am too used to sportier engines with a broader band.
@RocketMan_Moto3 жыл бұрын
I get that completely, but I am the opposite: I don't like revving an engine and so appreciate never really needing to go above about 4500rpm. The MT09 has a great engine, but it looks a bit weird, at least the latest version. I'm too old for blue wheels, lol. Ride safe :)

I've had my '22 Speed Twin for a couple weeks now. It's a nice bike, but it's no Speed Triple 1200. I think the biggest thing is how sketchy the Speed Twin feels at speed, 100 mph feels like death whereas the Speed Triple is telling me to go faster at 120. But that's what makes the Speed Twin a nice addition to the fleet, it's engaging at less than light speed, it's fun. Speed Triple is just so clinically perfect putting around, but wow is there ever the power of god at the right hand.

Cracking vid and nice review, thanks. Regarding the headlight bulb ... what are MOT regs like in Portugal? ... as in the UK now it's illegal to fit an LED bulb into a headlight thats not specifically designed for LED bulbs .... so fitting an LED into the Speed Twins headlight bowl here would be an MOT fail (of course one could always just swap back to halogen bulb just for the MOT).
@RocketMan_Moto3 жыл бұрын
There's actually no MOT for bikes here, although they're talking about introducing one (and so they should). Valid point about the bulb, although as I said, I never ride at night, it's just for flashing other road users :)
