As a recent purchaser of a relatively little-used 2018 T120, I've been amazed to find that you're one of the most, if not the most, credible sources on youtube for unbiased and helpful information for these bikes. You made this video 5 years ago, but rest assured that it's still providing good and useful information to people today. Just wanted to say thank you and leave this comment on the off chance it helps the channel.

Having bought a 1996 bmw r1100rs 3 years ago,my second.I have been spending time getting all the engine servicework done and overhauling the swingarm bearings and rear drive.The engine on these bikes although having plenty low down grunt,has always been abit lumpy at 3-3500 rpm.After fitting the boosterplug the engine is lovely and smooth all the way through the rev range and idling is also much improved.A very worthwhile modification.

I've been riding with one of these fitted for 6 months now and it is by far the best mod I have done to the bike. It was always a pleasure to ride, but this has moved it up a few notches on the pleasurable ride scale. Great recommendation!

I agree with Jono below. You sir, are beginning to cost me a fortune but investing in the smile on my face from the pleasure of my riding is worth every penny. I have a 2018 Bonny T100, the baby of the group but this booster plug has made all the difference to slow speed, stop and start riding. Also as a direct consequence of your videos, have fitted an x-pipe from Motone customs, a new Petrol filler Of vintage style and the beautiful Halcon stainless rectangular mirrors recommended from your story of your old motorbike. All items have given me vast pleasure from the D-cat and booster plug providing more power and smooth riding to the vastly improved visibility from the new mirrors. Thank you for fantastic ongoing videos and I certainly beg you to never stop doing these. the Dart fly screen is on the way and your words of caution relating to fitting will ring in my ears. The brass gear change knob serves no purpose other than looking fantastic. Thank you. My wife is very familiar with your name particularly in relation to my desire for British custom sleeper pro silences. All followers of your site are looking forward to your video on feminine persuasion and/or divorce settlement recommendations. I am actually very lucky to have a incredibly supportive wife even though she won't ever ride on a bike.

Thanks again Stuart. In regards to the snatchy throttle at low speeds, I just flick over to rain mode on the T120, when riding in stop/start situations, makes a Hugh difference.
@JamesIanGilliam6 ай бұрын
i realize this is an old comment, but i must agree. The snatchy throttle is a more of a quirk than a complaint, solved by the rain mode.
@torqueofthedevil81455 жыл бұрын
I fitted one of these to my Speed Twin yesterday and it 100% does everything Stuart says, the bike is so much nicer to ride now. No snatchy throttle, slow speed trailing throttle is easily applied now for low speed turns like roundabouts. Even cruising is better as when you shut the throttle off it’s lost that instant off feeling and feels like there is some tick over still propelling the bike like bikes used to feel. This is the best money I’ve spent on the bike so far. Just a superb bit of kit. Bike fuelling now feels pretty much perfect.
@robertyoung59106 жыл бұрын
Hi Stuart, ordered one and fitted it today and it's just like you described, smoothed out low speed engine speed and is more controlable at low speed and a bit ore punch at mid range acceleration, thanks for the info, that's all I will probably do to the bike and it was worth the expense.

I just fitted a BP to my 2017 Versys 1000, in an attempt to eliminate the snatchy (on/off) throttle. It did not eliminate that, but it did do everything else you described. It took about four hours to install on the Versys, including time to add an extra foot of length to the temperature probe in order to get it to the front of the bike. Man that bike is a pain to work on. One odd thing I've noticed is that the bike seems much smoother at cruising speeds, when the BP is not supposed to be active. Overall I'd say it was money well spent.

Just received mine, Stuart. It was the first thing I ordered after getting the keys to my t120 about two weeks ago. The finalised packaging is really nice actually; super quick delivery abroad, simple straight forward info in the box and a couple of goodies with a sense of humour. Installating was a breeze, especially since I already saw your video naturally. Tomorrow I'll take her for a spin and see if the snatchy throttle is improved. I ride a lot of mountain roads here in Switzerland and in the first gear hairpins, especially if the road surface is a bit damaged, the snappy throttly can catch me a bit off guard sometimes resulting me to 'tension-up' and brace myself as you said. If not yet sufficient, a 39T or even 41T rear sprocket (in black!) will be on the way as soon as the original one and/or chain needs replacing. Will report back. For now, thnx for your wonderfull content on the bonnie's. Always interesting, well documented and the video quality keeps going up.
@MrSjeupie5 жыл бұрын
Ok, installed them and rode the bike like I normally would. The difference is most certainly noticable. Revs at idle are slightly up but boy is the throttle respons smoother. I always had the idea that it was either 0 throttle or 5% instantly. With the booster plug it seems I can actually get 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5% of throttle too. Much smoother. All other possible differences the boosterplug makes are, in my book, necligible. And that includes the slight increase in fuel consumption. Cause honoustly, a tweet by Trump has a much great effect on my fuel costs than all the booster plugs in the world combined...! Thanks for pointing me (and others) in this direction Stuart!

Thanks for the video. I do think that the Booster plug works. The little black box of the Booster plug contains no software, only a resistor that is connected in parallel with the NTC thermistor. The NTC thermistor is a pipe type with fast time response. The value of both the resistor and the NTC may vary depending on the brand of the bike and/or the type of fuel injection used.
@stuartfillingham6 жыл бұрын
Ah im sure i read in booster plugs literature that it was controlled by some basic software, but i may stand corrected!

I’ve just fitted my booster plug and taken the Bonnie out for a spin. Wow ...what a difference! I can’t understand why some people say it’s a gimmick. Throttle control at stop-start speeds is far smoother, and overall at-speed performance is noticeably stronger. There’s no reason not to get one, especially for riders who carry a pillion and don’t like being headbutted. Thanks for your vid Stuart, it provided the reassurance about the plug I needed to get my wallet out.

Wow Stu! I’ve been riding my 120 pretty consistently in the last two weeks and yes I have realized that problem myself. I describe it as the bike being confused as to what you want it to do. I also noticed from the first time I rode the bike, how light the throttle is. You can throttle it with just a finger and that plus the sudden jerk of the bike scares me at times. This one is definitely an upgrade worth considering. Keep us updated as to how it continues to perform.

I put a similar device in my 2007 Harley-Davidson. Having a 1548cc air-cooled engine it was really putting out a lot of heat and on a hot day (we get many here in Southern California) I would experience "pre-ignition pinging" and after installing this type of device, I had a cooler running engine with no more pinging and albeit subtle, quicker acceleration. I believe I have extended the life of this air-cooled engine quite a bit as the lean factory setting had this engine running way too hot. I don't yet own a T-120 but it is on the horizon and this will likely be one of the first mods I perform.

I swear your always one step ahead of me. Just completed my decat and im still rocking the british customs exhaust tips. People say you cant do both because theirs not enough back pressure, others say its perfectly fine but it'll just run rich, and the perfect solution they say is...dun dun dun....power booster. Ive been researching them for days now and as you say some people claim they are snake oil and some say they are sent from heaven. Glad to have an opinion from someone I trust. Thanks as always.
@stuartfillingham6 жыл бұрын
well if it snakes oil sir its damned effective snake oil!
@yughiii6 жыл бұрын
Because the booster plug is a one size fits all solution some bikes will benefit more than others, it all depends on how the manufacturer has mapped the ecu. Fooling the ecu into thinking the temperature is colder than in realty is a relative crude way of solving a mapping issue which will work for some but not for others.

Fantastic bit of kit. I fitted this to my T120 in only 10 minutes. It has transformed the bike at lower speeds and it has made gear changes much smoother. I got mike from Motorworks - they area UK dealer for Booster plug and keep stocks for most bikes and send out really quickly. It works well on its own or with a decat pipe. Well recommended.

Is your T120 fitted with an x-pipe? Curious if this booster plug is the solution for my decatted T120, which has as a result lost all its back pressure and engine breaking.
@JasonSobell5 жыл бұрын
@@CyrilHelnwein Decat has nothing to do with engine braking. Back pressure from a cat is part of 'scavenging', which is a fueling effect, and has nothing to do with engine braking that's caused by the compression of air with no or little subsequent ignition. Engine braking after a decat is identical to before, so it's a placebo effect. We run a dyno shop, I own a Thruxton 1200R, and we've measured everything related to BPs, PCVs, mufflers, decats etc. Do a Google search and you'll see some of the original results I posted 2 years ago about decat effects on A/F mixtures. BPs will make the bike feel smoother. They over-richen the mixture during acceleration, so the effect feels smooth because it's similar to having a stretchy throttle cable. The disadvantage is fuel economy and performance, as the over-rich mixture reduces torque, but if you prefer the smoother feel then it will do what you want. I would never fit one, as it's like drilling out your pilot jets to add 13% across the range. I'm not a 'hater', I just have a dyno and know what the effects are.
@CyrilHelnwein5 жыл бұрын
Thanks @@JasonSobell I was afraid that this is the case. Looks like I need to fork out some more money (€550 to be exact). My throttle is quite smooth as it is, I'm just worried that the now too-lean AFR can cause engine damage with overheating. Was hoping a BP would be enough to solve that, but I guess it is probably not enough and not worth the risk.
@sb-hy5ir5 жыл бұрын

Took my Thruxton 1200 standard out for a quick blast to blast down the 3 lane section A3 in Surrey. Thruxton reached 115mph much easier with Booster Plug. Had a lot to spare too. Was into a head wind as well. Previously I struggled to hit 105mph without Booster Plug. That was a big surprise. Wasn’t expecting any performance gains at the top end at all. Expected the opposite tbh. So seems like 2 lower BHP across the range but better fueling? These emissions rules euro 4 & 5 must really knacker bikes true performance. Low speed fueling seems a lot better but does feel like the “choke” is out 5%. I recommend it. I’m keeping the booster plug in. Now will buy one for my KTM Duke 790 which has really crap low speed fueling around town or roundabouts. Booster plug was an easy install for the Thruxton. Lifted the tank at the seat end via undoing one long bolt, undid a couple of long bolts near the seat/tank area to get access to AIT sensor, simply plug connected the BP to the AIT, then stuffed the BP temperature sensor cable down the close by left side air intake snorkel as recommended by BP. No soldering, clipping or retuning needed.

Very timely video for me, Stuart. I fitted a 'Booster Plug' to my Thruxton about three weeks ago. Can't say my bike has ever really suffered from the jerky throttle blight.......but that could be because I'm a savage oaf, with the sensitivity of a door knob, who knows. I have fitted a cross pipe, and V&H silencers. I wondered, primarily, if it would help with the 'popping' in the exhaust on deceleration. It was with that goal in mind I fitted it. Did it eliminate the problem? Did it heckerslike....... BUT, it did seem to reduce it. Other benifits I found? Well, as you mention in your video, it's sort of hard to explain. The bike just feels more responsive, or alive is probably a better way of putting it. The idle on warm up is more strong and steady, and the whole riding experience is just more enjoyable. I know a lot of concern is expressed about increase in fuel consumption, due to the methodology employed by the device. There hasn't been any increase, in fact, mine is slightly better. I put this down in the main, to the fact your getting what you want sooner, and at correspondingly Lower throttle openings. I'm sure there will be other points of view, and people are entitled to hold them. But for what it's worth, mines staying on the bike. By the way, when you buy yours, it comes packed in a really sturdy cardboard box.

Good question Phil! no it doesn't the cooling system is a completely different circuit!

Just wanted to say this, I have both a 2016 thruxton R and a 2017 street cup and the street cup is one of the smoothest bikes I’ve ever ridden and is a joy but the thruxton has the most snatchy and jerky throttle response ever at low rpms and I’m hoping this might help.
@volt7cooltangs7013 жыл бұрын
I own a Thruxton 2017 1200 Ade and if you think the throttle response is jerky at low speeds you ain’t tried the KTM Duke 790 throttle at less then 30mph. Boy now that really is fkn sh!te. Makes the Thruxton throttle seem as smooth as a baby’s derrière. I’m going to fit Booster plugs on both me bikes. Worth a try.

Great video. Id recommend the throttle mod too to take the 'gap' out of the throttle movement. Ducati use the same. I got cheapo off ebay and its great. May I ask what drone you use, amazing cinematography.

Love the drone footage. Were you near Hollym? I used to fly in there now and again. An interesting place.

Not too far from Hollym Paul. not sure of the exact location as a lot of the roads in the area were closed for some reason and I ended up getting a little lost!

I have never understood all the "jerky" starts and inability to regulate the EFI throttle, FZ(MT) 09, FZ(MT)07, NC700X, 1200 THRUXTON, BMW F800R, none of these ever have responded that way nor did my Sprint ST 1050, Bonneville EFI etc.

I've not noticed any jerkiness with my 900 Street Scrambler at low speeds, is this a feature of the 1200cc engine bikes more so than the 900cc machines?
@stuartfillingham5 жыл бұрын
Its caused by the emissions control system David all modern bikes do it to some extent.

Emailed BoosterPlug today with a bunch of tech questions related to the latest Norman Hyde X-Cat and Toga silencer mods to my T120. Received an email reply back from Jens (@boosterplug.com) within 5 minutes. He answered all of my technical questions with a very detailed email reply addressing all of my concerns. Not to mention my follow up email questions; which he answered in the same timely manner. He even emailed me back after my order was placed to let me know that he was available, if needed, for help during the install - NICE!!! ... and, as always, thanks to you Stuart for bringing another innovative product to our attention and also for creating such informative and entertaining vids!

Stuart, after watching this vid I started shopping for one. I’m not sure which will fit my application which is a Street Cup. The supplier in the USA I’m looking at lists a Twin 800-900 series. Is this it? Another spot on review, as I have this issue. Thanks, and by the way, installed the led bulb upgrade exactly as you reviewed and am completely happy. Your tests go a long way towards my final decision about where my hard earned money goes.

Hi Stuart. Wonder if you can shed any light on a challenge I have with the boost plug. I have just changed my T100 for the magnificent and latest 2018 T120 and installed the booster plug after loving its application on my previous bike. Unfortunately the moment it is installed it activates the ECU warning light and after visiting the Triumph dealer they have told me that the latest emission control systems in the bike will pick up items like this and the fault cannot be cleared ( by a triumphant dealer anyway). As a result the warrantee would be invalidated if I ride the bike with the ECU warning light permanently on. Have you come across this problem or has anyone else come across this problem that could possibly share with me a solution. The new bike runs beautifully with the Plug installed but I certainly would not like to ride permanently with the warning light.

No, that's not why you'll get an error. The BP is simply a thermostat, and it adds a small resistance to the ambient air temp sensor in the airbox. You can do exactly the same thing by fitting a resistor in series with the pink wire to the sensor (but that would only cost 2p instead of 160euro!) :) My guess is that your ECU is not detecting the sensor any longer, either because it's not plugged in properly or faulty. If you hold the 'i' button on your handlebars while you turn on the ignition, keep it held down for about 10 secs, the display will tell you the DTC error code. It may be P0112 (intake temp sensor shorted to ground) or P0113 (air temp sensor open circuit or shorted to 5v). Try disconnecting the BP and plug back into the sensor directly.

Stuart, do you still ride with this fitted. If so, have you noticed any change? I ask as I see from some forums that some are of the opinion that the ECU has eventually overridden the change that the booster plug makes, thereby rendering it useless. Cheers

Have you got something against Tyr? Seriously, your clear explanation sent me off to their website to buy a couple. Unfortunately, Euro 5 makes it unviable for my 2021 RE Continental GT 650 and fitting one to my 2020 Goldwing DCT would involve dismantling tons of plastic (No, I haven't won the lottery, I just decided my money would rather roll around on twisty roads, or any roads for that matter, with me on its back than hang around in the bank waiting for my heirs.). Kudos to them for being clear and honest and to you likewise. Good riding.
