Respect for your commitment and your enthusiasm. I appreciated how much thought you put behind your idea an shared it. I will most likely not go through this process to unveil the good sound of the bike but I think the T-bird need it.

Spend enough time scouring the internet you can find parts of a fairly decent price these days because the bike is so far out of production.

I made the first cut on both pipes while installed. That changed the sound enough that I'm happy with it for now. My t bird has no cat box though.

Tado Prelle Same. I have the Short Tors though. It’s tamed at idle and even under little throttle. But much more noticeable than before the cut was made. When under heavy throttle it’s a mean loud growl. You will be heard! I’d be careful with going further than the first cut with the shorts. May lose back pressure.

@@demboyz3315 I have Short TORs but find them a bit too quiet. Would be great to see/hear a video of your's after making the first cut.

This is good stuff. Thank you for sharing. It's either this or 700-900 bucks for something else in the market which there are not many options for us here in the US.

I have in the last year refined the opening, replaced the original empty cat box with a stainless mid link pipe that improved exhaust gas removal. I also made two version of removable baffles before settling on the final third design. The cumulative effort cleaned up the sound removing higher frequency raspy sound, softened engine drone, and improved the mpg.

As others have said, great effort. I don't think I'd be brave enough to try this, though! I have the stock pipes, with cat removed. It's a nice sound, would like a little more volume, but ..... maybe if I had a spare set to experiment with.

You can do it! They are cheap used. I picked up every extra the bike had from dealers selling them as cost in the years after the bike was discontinued. I have the foot boards front/back, highway bars front with adjustable foot pegs. The rear highway bars would not fit with my bags. Even the lower deflectors for the wind screen.

@@kludgescraftsplus8631 I managed to buy a pair of stock pipes (brand new) for £50, so will be having a go when I get around to it.

Great work gave me a thought what if the cat was kept with short section of chrome pipe maybe 12" long with angled cut on end

There are a variety of methods for replacing the catalytic converter. One of the most straightforward is to simply use a piece of 90° elbow electrical conduit cut in half. Doing this loses all of the central connection supports. There are some decent stainless steel aftermarket versions of this that include the supports that I would recommend first. I have been going through my photos and collecting them all to shoot an updated video of the work that removed the catalytic converter, and then refined and manufactured removable baffles.

No, I gutted to the catalytic converter next, but that required a power commander to get running better, and eventually entirely replaced it with a aftermarket stainless tube version. I currently use a Power Commander 5 and a Power Commander auto tuner two-channel. I've just never put the time into making a video on the final results because it is so difficult to get good audio to capture the sound.

I had a power comander V only at the time and dyno tuning in a shop is expensive. I added the dual channel auto tune kit in march of 2022. There are a ton of things to recommend in doing this that DynoJet never directly states as suggested. At this point I have two tunes, one uses Triumph's TOR map, and the other is a modified version with the i3 timing tables copied into the i1 & i2 tables. It is as some have said, " a stump puller". Triumph's Thunderbird maps are very much turned down in the low rev low gear.

Inside the catalytic converter box for two horn shaped elbows that point towards the center. At the ends of these use where the catalytic material is. You can open the bottom of the box remove the material and put it back leaving the horns, and it has a great sound, but it is difficult to tune without going to a Dyno, or having an auto tuner. You can also achieve close to the same thing with a slightly different sound I'm sure, if you just use a circle hole saw that will fit into the cat box from the header side. Punching a hole right there bypasses the elbow and the catalytic material all together, no need to open. However I would not at this point in time recommend either one. When I did it the cat delete options for few and expensive. I have since replaced the empty box with a stainless steel kit for significantly less money than they were originally available from eBay. I also eventually made several versions before the final, of removable exhaust baffles. They added back in some back pressure at lower rpms, and did a whole lot to clean up the tone. They are still very high flow compared to anything you find on Thunderbird short of straight open pipes. This many years down the road it seems that very few people ride them or care to ask questions about tinkering with them.
