You don't compress the spring to measure airgap. According to T workshop manual top cap should be off during empty/fill/level operation therefore spring uncompressed and just fork outer at bottom of travel. Also makes pumping damper easy.

Thanks for this, the manuals are confusing as one says 30 mm with spring installed and fully compressed the other say 80mm with the spring removed and fully compressed. Next time I do it I will be changing the springs as I find them too soft even with the preload on full.

@@upnorthbiker it says "The oil level is measured (the 30mm) from the upper surface of the fork outer tube, with the fork fully compressed and the spring installed." Installed in bold, it's saying compress the fork ie outer all the way down on the inner and then put the spring in. It never says to compress the spring, treating it and the fork (inner/outer) separately. This is reinforced by the fact it's previously told you to take top cap off and does not tell you to put it back on until you've filled and levelled. You can't compress spring without cap on. When they are talking about fork being compressed in both cases they mean compress outer over inner not the spring.

@@Ciderwinder Hi I have updated the description in the video to reflect this. Thanks for pointing it out.

Hi there Up North Biker. Respect!! You have nerves of steel attempting this on your own. I also have a Tiger Sport 1050 so these videos have been really helpful. Thank you! Can you confirm that both the wheel spacers are the same size? After taking the wheel off for a tyre change I was really paranoid I had got them mixed up when I put it back together!

Yes I think they are the same. If you look at fowlers parts they show the same part number for both spacers. www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/view/T2000427

Thanks so much. Looking forward to more wrenching videos.
I know it is more work but did you consider stripping forks down completely.

I wouldn’t know where to start on that one if I am honest. Plus you need more tools that would be used very rarely. Are there and videos out there of this being done.

Searched KZbin and found two channels Gas n Gears and Craft&Ride which show how to dissasemble Showa upside down forks. I have not watched them yet.@@upnorthbiker
