If any of today's skaters did rock solid loops and brackets like that in the mif tests I think the judges would fall out of their seats😀

The compulsory figures were the most important part of figure skating until 1972, far more points than for the free program. Trixi Schuba was so superior in the compulsory figures that an average free program was enough for the gold-medal also at the Sapporo-Olympics 1972, after which she retired (probably also, because the rules changed and much more points for the free program were awarded from then on). It was often difficult to understand for the spectators.

I always wondered if she ever attempted a double axel. Surprised with how easy it looked for her she didn't try it more often. Not like if she messed it would cost her the win with her always winning figures, why not go for it.

Agreed. Considering the press used to give her such grief for not including one, that must have been hard on her, knowing how well she did it. I remember in an interview with Skate Guard, that Schuba herself said she found the jump really scary to attempt, however.

Trixie did a decent double axel - especially for the time - in the 1968 Europeans!

Unfortunately, my translation has disappeared. I wanted to re-add it here but it's too long.

The compulsory figures taught you to control your edges. They weren't the big bag wolf of the skating world.

Did you also have the special figure skates with the longer blades, I remember hours of early morning figures, 5:30am-8 am threes, brackets double threes, rockers and counters. Freezing with leg warmers and gloves

Эта каряга была чемпионкой, благодаря своей каллиграфии на льду.
