I bought a toy sewing machine from Five Below for $5. It's a dupe of the Singer toy sewing machine that Trixie briefly used. I use it exactly as Trixie was thinking - I bring it on the go for quick repairs or when I'm traveling - but I've found a few ways to make it function much much better. If anyone feels ambitious enough to sew an entire outfit with this toy machine, here are some tips: -The toy machines use a type of stitch called a chain stitch, similar to how crochet patterns are started. So, by not backstitching at the beginning and end of each sewed piece, the chain stitch will naturally fall apart. To backstitch, I do it exactly as Trixie does by lowering the needle into my fabric, lifting up the presser foot, and then turning my piece 180 degrees. Once you stitch to the starting point, you again insert your needle and lift the presser foot, then turn the piece back to its original position. -Don't use the thread that comes with these toy sewing machines. It is cheap and plastic-based. Instead, opt for a durable cotton thread. This will help make the chain stitches sturdier and prevent the thread from accidentally breaking when the garment is worn. -Lower your expectations (aka my life motto) -The tension knob is your friend! Personally, I like to start out and finish my pieces with a tight tension. After backstitching and then beginning the first inch or so of my garment, I then adjust the tension to be somewhat looser. Since the beginning and the end of chain-stitched pieces are so prone to unraveling, a tight tension at each end can help make these stitches stay in place. -Don't use stretch fabric. Stretch fabric is a total b to sew with, def not the type of thing you'd want to tackle with a toy. The best fabrics for toy sewing machines are the traditional cotton, no-stretch fabrics (like the kind that is sold in fat quarters). -If you plan on wearing what you sew or using it often, I encourage you to finish your raw edges with a hem or some sort of finishing stitch. This will prevent the edges of your piece from unraveling. The toy machines only straight stitch, so if you want to do a finishing stitch you'll have to do this by hand (assuming you don't own a regular machine). These stitches are super simple and quick. You can either do an overcast stitch or use a basic whipstitch. I hope these help! Good luck out there, you single weirdos who cruise the toy aisles!
@shawnbay2211 Жыл бұрын
Wow. This is amazing. I suppose we’d have to assume this does chain stitches cause there’s no bobbin. Being a beginner seamstress, I wonder if learning with a no-bobbin machine would be easier than with. Istg, half of my troubles are because of it. I honestly can’t imagine a kid being able to comprehend working with them 😆

@dixierae34423 жыл бұрын
Such a shame what people will do to save $30. I wonder if when they released that sorry excuse for a sewing machine which probably sold a large amount that Trixie Mattel would be reviewing it on her show. I would say that's karma in full swing. LOL
@Candychocoblock3 жыл бұрын
@@dixierae3442 I don't think it's about saving $30, I think parents are more concerned about safety. The Singer sewing machine had a lot of enclosed plastic parts to cover the needle, the bobbin etc, and I suppose they don't want their kids to get their fingers caught in a regular sewing machine. Of course sewing machines are safe and with a few lessons they'll get the hang of it, but a lot of parents think directly to "sharp object = bad" and go from there.

I grew up sewing on my mom's singer that was from the 60s or 70s. It was sooooooo heavy. After I got married I finally decided to buy my own and I could not believe how light they have become. I got a brother that looks similar to Trixie's it was some project Runway collab thing. I think I spent just over 100 to get the one that had more stitches and the buttonhole foot and an attachment that does a double needle sewing thing (I think it is for trim). I mostly just use it for making patwork quilts and I did buy a quilting foot for it. The only thing I really miss about my mom's machine was that it had measurements marked on the feed dog plate which helped a lot and it had a cover/carry case that just snapped on to the bottom of the machine, I'm sure I could buy a case for mine, but I just keep it in the box with a piece of fabric over it to keep dust off. But dang it is nice when I have to take it out and it doesn't feel like my arm is going to come out of the socket carrying it.
@Izzy-ez7lb3 жыл бұрын
@@MommyOfZoeAndLiam idk what the feed dog plate is made of on your machine, but I'm sure you could sharpie on some measurements or tape a measure tape on it if you really wanted measurements on it!
@MommyOfZoeAndLiam3 жыл бұрын
@@Izzy-ez7lb it is metal and the bobbin cover part is plastic. I have used blue painters tape for a few projects and I try not to leave it on for more than a week. The nice part of that is I can use a long piece to keep the fabric aligned easily for straight seams so for quilts it is great.bbI would worry that sharpie would somehow rub onto the fabric. The ones on my moms machine were cast into the metal. But what I usually do is just use the edge of the quilting foot as my seam allowance. Thank you for your ideas though!!
