The 1974 oil crisis was not kind to American auto engineers. 4-6 liter v8s that originally made 250-450 horsepower (or more with modification) had to be detuned for fuel efficiency and emissions. Seems to have recovered by around 2005-ish but now all the car companies are switching to electric.

The worst example of American hp/l inefficiency is either the olds 350 diesel with 5.7L at 105 hp. Or the Cadillac 500 with 8.2 L and made 187 hp at the worst. So yeah, kind of true.
