Stumbled across shopgoodwill years ago and bought quite a few Ludwigs (I’m a drummer) which I would clean up, repair and do what was needed then resold. Not all that profitable but I enjoyed restoring them. Sad but there are too many who know about it now and every single piece sells for more than they’re worth.

You have to look for amps in your local area because they usually won't ship those. I've also bought a Line 6 pod XT board. But I did have to replace a capacitor on the motherboard. You have to find the oddball items I bought A BC rich warlock from them , That looked very rough. A few months ago, I walked into a Salvation Army thrift store in upstate N.Y., and the first thing I spotted was an '85 Ibanez Roadstar ll in a beat up chipboard case. The guitar is mint. The frets had zero wear. I think they had a pricetag of $39.95 on the guitar. I grabbed it, ran to the counter, paid, and out the door I went.

He buys and sells Gibson and is clearly exploiting the last vestiges of the die hard Gibson fan base that are willing to pay big money for basically nothing. It makes sense that he has learned all he can about the brand he predominantly sells. No hate here, he is making money for himself and his family. This brand loyalty mentality is dying out though and I for one can't wait for the time where I start seeing used Gibsons being sold for similar prices to the likes of Framus, Ibenez and other solid yet uninflated used guitars.

GoodWill: Where the CEO makes HUGE amounts of money via salary and the company is registered as non-profit.... Where some items donated never benefit your exact locale, they get shipped off to some other city for processing and sale... Where prices on online auctions (where stories exist where they pick the best of the best to send to auction) start considerably higher than what it would have been in-store... AND auction frenzy can cause you to WAY overpay if you don't control yourself.

Austin, I watch this site all the time. It’s ridiculous what shows up. Thing is, the bidders drive the prices up, and you’re right - often higher than the value of the instrument. When the good ones come up, they really drive up prices. And yes, you have to pay shipping. After watching the site for probably 6 months, I determined the bid-up people drive the bids so high, we may as well go to Reverb or buy a new one.

You're given a receipt for purposes of a tax write off but it's completely useless seeing as how the store doesn't log what is donated or who donates it. You're able to claim $5000 in charitable donations on your tax return regardless. Apparently few people are aware of that.
@Floortile83
@Floortile83 4 жыл бұрын
You act like donating for a tax deduction is a bad thing. I donate tens of thousands a year for tax deduction. I make way less in deduction than if I were to sell the items myself or even hire someone to sell them. But it's simpler for me to donate and I get to help the ppl who frequent goodwill to shop. I really fail to see how charity deductions are bad. It's the rich ppl that donate to chairies the most. So the less fortunate wouldn't even have charities if it wasn't for us. Yet someone were labeled as bad for donating because we get a tax deduction?? The deduction is an incentive to donate. If there was no incentive, charities would have a lot less.

WOW! I've been shopping on GW site for a couple years. And I literally just bought an Epi SG CS cherry red, two days ago. Still waiting for it to ship to VA from WI. Probably overpaid a little but it's all good. Not looking to flip it. It used to be guitars, electronics and other "treasures" would be for sale locally in the store, but now the local stores are basically clothes and leftovers that didn't sell online. About the only way to get a deal now is bid on local stuff and pick it up to save shipping charges.

I had high hopes for that Goodwill site when I found it, but the bidding there is beyond ridiculous. Every decent guitar or amp goes for way more than eBay, and there's no return policy. They were selling a Chibson double neck SG a while ago with an obviously forged signature of of Glenn Frey. It sold for well over $1000.

Around late February, early March is the time noise making Christmas gifts (drums, guitars, ELECTRIC guitars and basses) start showing up in thrift stores around Birmingham Al because either 1. Parents regret the gift and are tired of hearing it , or 2. Juniors grades have dropped because he's a "rocker" now, or 3. Juniors gave his amp and guitar a custom florescent spray paint job, strings and all. I actually bought a generic Strat and practice amp for $20 because "Eric Crapton" spray painted his "rig" florescent pink and orange. The paint came off that guitars finish easily. The amp didn't make it. Lots of broken neck guitars too. I'm sure there's some stories there . . .

I bought several guitars off Goodwill a few years ago (and a few other problematic things with similar issues/experiences) My experiences with Goodwill Online at the time could be summed up with this: proper disclosure of problems with their guitars, and many other items, were almost non-existent. After getting one guitar with a chunk missing out of the head - expertly hidden from any of the what-looked-to-be-complete photos, I started to scrutinize the photos for any inch of their items that were omitted. They were also trying to hide behind an "all sales final" or "no guarantee" approach to selling their goods, and in their customer service. That's fine, if you're not carrying out a deceptive approach to documenting the items, and trying to hide behind a "we are not experts" strategy to deflect complaints. Another guitar I purchased had a stripped-out truss rod bolt head, which was a big problem and easy to spot, but was hard to dispute because of the listing workers' lack of knowledge about the items being listed. Those were the two worst ones of 6 I purchased over a period of time, the two most expensive, and the two that were deceptive in their photos and description. The other ones were purchased and documented well enough that there were no surprises, even though the documentation was not as complete as you would like. It was definitely a risk to purchase back then, but I think some of the listing practices have gotten a little better with some of the more problematic regional centers. But still, be aware that they are certainly not at the Reverb or Ebay level of documenting their items. After dealing with their customer service, they're are certainly not at an appropriate level of business practices to feel secure in feeling like a purchase will be anything more than a gamble. If you bid, do so with that in mind - my opinion, but based on my experiences.

This brings up 2 different recollections. First, back in '95 when I started learning and was searching for a first electric guitar , I was tempted by the Epiphone Strat copy and would later grab their P-bass copy. Awesome for a start-up bass. Second, only a few years ago, I was in Tulsa visiting my good friend. I gave up on The Goodwill auction site a while ago....the prices are inflated (suspiciously high) and you will generally find guitars in better condition as well as less expensive on Reverb/Ebay. Quick example, Goodwill had a vintage Ibanez Blazer....very rough condition and clearly had been exposed to excessive moisture....bids were well into the $300s I grabbed a sweet Blazer on EBay for $230 in "much" better condition.

On the way out the door I saw a black square pushed into a corner of the store. Went and gave it a peek-see. It was an Acoustic (brand name) bass head sitting on top of a 2X15 matching cab in very decent shape. Tagged @ $50 😯 I was sure it had to be shot. Told my nephew even the cab on wheels is worth it. I was sure it was fried. We got it back to my place and... worked perfectly. I'm still amazed. Let him have the find. I have too much gear as it is and he's young so it's a bigger deal for him. There's a lot of wealth in this area. Still can't believe it was just donated and sorely underpriced.

Everyone I know that has worked for goodwill had got themself into a bind from their own actions and was referred by a local judge. Most of them I've met after their issues. The requirements if ran traditionally you can't get into trouble with the law for any reason. You usually have to have counseling for what your infraction. And it's suggested that you get involved with faith based groups . The money from the store is supposed to go to employees and to helping people in need. I've been to many locations and the set up wasn't much different than a warehouse. There is one I've seen that looks like a Dillards or similar store inside and out.

Interesting. There are a few MIJ older guitars that had neither serial numbers or a MIJ indicator other than a sticker that usually falls off. A good example is Fernandes. I found one with a hardshell case that cost me $250.00. The PU's had been changed to whatever but the there was no damage to it at all. The hardware is all Gotoh ...the whammy holds tuning better then my Custom Shop Strat. I put a TV Jones Classic at the neck and a Duncan Pearly gates PAF at the bridge. Bingo ...I have an exceptional player

For anyone asking people are donating these guitars because Goodwill lets you take a massive write off on your taxes. Even if the guitar is worth 2k, Goodwill will let you claim like 6k or more at some locations.

If you enjoy working on guitars you can find decent deals on mid level instruments here that need some repair. I’ve done it a couple times just to do some no-pressure major repair. I’m not trying to make big bucks, it’s just good experience.

as a over 35 yr dealer in antiques and music player. i did aprasels for local outfit gathers. one thing they had in common was once an item was apraised workers got first crack. unless it was being saved for holiday. this was before learned the internet. or willing to pay someone. i wount name names or places. today these are are tax free million dollar corps. i help a few setup their web pages. as i was and still am 25 yr plus ebayer and seller. as always a honest tresure hunter. knowing is everything. in old days. everything was local. now control is more careful and items will end up at national know auction houses. were instruments of 10,000 and up. you don't known the seller. maybe just that it's donated. it's up to giver to fill out tax forms. and how many do remember this is the biggest resale in country next to pawn shop. they pay taxes. remembering most is untested. amps included. this has in proved with large outfits. but guitars see inside is another story. you walk a fine line. being honest is the only safe route. most of the time they want your work for free. but it's the only way to see!

As a former Goodwill employee saying this, DO NOT GIVE TO GOODWILL. They are not a charity nor do they do charity work. We had one disabled person working like 3 days a week at most. (One nice dude who was really into rings.) Also over half of what is donated gets thrown in the trash. They have a "recycling" program where they take all the scrap metal from the pots and clothes that do not sell or are boarderline unsellable and sell them as salvage to some companies out in Africa or some place. Cause ya know thats what recycling is right? Selling stuff for money. You are basically giving them stuff for free and they are turning a profit off of it while doing the, most likely, legal minimum to make the claims that they do. The district manager drove an Audi A8 if that is any indication. Give your stuff to someplace that actually tries to help people, like the local women's shelter or something. Seriously...
@zacharyrestelli1402
@zacharyrestelli1402 4 жыл бұрын
I mean yes, that is what recycling is. When you put stuff out in your recycling bins, the town sells what they collect to recycling companies who in turn make a profit selling the materials they get from the recycled items. That's normal.

We must remember that people bid this high because it's for charity and some buyers want to give more just to help out. You could volunteer down at your church(mosque) or secular donation esell non profit. I'm sure you could help by donating just two hours a week. Even online.

9:24 Squire Affinity for $10.99 yeah I'd bid on that. Its a guitar made with the same specie of wood as a normal strat, they have a few things to go over but nothing major, pickups suck but it is only $10.99. They sound surprisingly good and the only difference between them and a normal strat is the body thickness. Those are 1.5 inches thick while normal strats are made 1.75 inches thick. So its hard to find a tone block that would fit if you wanted to upgrade it. But again its $10.99.......you buy that thing or at least bid on it for a buck more.

I remember these Epiphone Strats. Back when Mtv used to have the have show "Remote Control," (which was the first non-music video show they had, which was cool at the time but was the harbinger of the end years later when they show ZERO music video). Mtv were still relatively new, so they didn't have the budget they did later when Viacom bought them. So the grand prizes were kids of weak. Those Epiphone Strats were one of the prizes.

You can review more efficiently by setting up filters and save the search. I look at highest price and most bids sorts. I also have a new today search for acoustic and electric. I can review in less than 3 minutes to see if any quality stuff is out there. Click on the individual items to see more pictures. Like most auctions, lots of bid activity in the last minute. 99% is not interesting but the 1% is actually worth a quick look. Anything with Gibson or Martin in the name typically are overbid at too high a price,

ITS TAX DEDUCTIBLE!!! People pass away, families with no clue donate high end guitars, they get way over bid but it is considered a donation and you get to right off grandpa's 1962 fender Strat. Trust me, they do pop up often and I always get out bid. People with deep pockets keep an eye on that sight for good reason.

I've donated a lot of stuff to Goodwill but never instruments. The reason people donate them is you can get a tax right off receipt for the value of what you donate. I never get the receipt though because if I'm donating stuff I just want to donate it with no sneaky agendas but that's just me. Everybody else do what your conscience says is ok to you...

How many people have another relative's guitar in the attic, closet, basement who never came back to get it ? People who dont play, view musical instruments as "in the way", so they may end up at Goodwill or the local landfill.
