Trolling Mag Lip Crankbaits for Walleye

When trolling in a lake I like to run a 4.0 mag lip hooks removed then about a 30in leader and a 2.0 or 2.5 behind it , works lile a champ ,the 4.0 acts as a diver and the fish attack the smaller plug

In a very strong current river, do you troll with the current or against it when trolling?

Depends how strong you mean by "very strong". If you can keep the same lure vibration without too much speed difference between downstream and upstream runs, going downstream is doable. In the Detroit River, I catch most of the walleyes going upstream, but get pike just about equally going either way. Typically a little less than a 1mph speed difference.

Nice video, great info! That Mag Lip looks a lot like a flatfish, one of the hot baits of the mid 20th century. But has a tighter wiggle, presumably can go at higher speeds or against stronger current without blowing out. Great point about speed. A lot of walleye anglers go too slow, especially in warmer water. That first of the nicer 'eyes looked like *typical* size for an 'eye caught trolling in the Detroit River; though more people jig than troll the river, with smaller average fish and much better numbers than trolling. I like to catch *big* fish, and enjoy getting nice pike, which often way outnumber the 'eyes when trolling, so I usually troll. Lucky to be in SE Michigan. I like to use braid with a length of mono (about 10ft to 20ft, more when it's warmer and I'm moving faster, in general) tied with a uni (braid) to leader (mono) knot to lose less fish by tearing out, while keeping good feedback. I've noticed a considerable difference in getting a higher % of fish that hit to the boat. We can run 3 rods per angler in Michigan. For using rod holders obviously a reel with a bait clicker is great to have. I like longer 8'6" or even 9' "steelhead/salmon" rods for trolling for more shock absorption, a little wider spread, and longer casting if I switch up to casting on a school.

i fish the clinch river in knoxville , using my nucanoe with 55lb minkota , i troll mostly, caught large mouth and drum with deep dive cranks , havint hit a walleye yet. whats the best speed range you use to troll ? i see all kinds of fish 5 to 15 ft in 25 to 35 ft of water [also on bottom] do you think the eyes woulf only be on bottom ? thanks
